I have worked with children who recieved it for mental reasons. You would have to contact a disability lawyer to find out how. Usually if a child is bad enough to get SSI they have other mental issues that make them qualify.
It's not something I recommend though. Most of the kids I see who are on SSI for mental reasons could have been productive members of society with some meds and therapy, but will now simply live off of the system the rest of their lives because they have been led to believe they can't do much else.

Oh that's really sad:( sounds like their parents were just in it to get those checks... & that's truly sad.

If kids with ADHD qualify for SSI, that would be pathetic. My daughter has it and it is controlled well with medication. My son on the other hand had a life threatening illness that required a bone marrow transplant that did major harm to him to save his life. SSI rejected him as soon as he turned 18 despite not being able to work. He lives with constant pain and his immune system is compromised. He also deals with depression because of these things. Something is very wrong with the system!
I believe the system is broken. I have a dear friend with a terrible crippling illness who continues to be turned down. At the same time I know a woman who says simply that she "has papers" She seems to recieve SSI for being nuts. It's not fair and I'm sorry that your son is having to deal with it. Has he hired an attorney?

I really believe it only works for those who don't need it. My daughter was born half blind and has been turned down many times in two different states where my sisters son gets ssi because he wet the bed when he was younger

The system does seem to suck & it seems as tho that very few that actually need help get it & the others are just the ones "working the system".

Im sorry to hear about the illness your son has. Makes me realize how much I take for granted since I have healthy kids. I will be praying for you and him.

That is what is wrong with soceity, everyone wants a check for everything. I understand that having a child with ADHD is challenging, but you shouldn't be getting a check because of it. Get real. You have many people that would rather go through a long process (many years) to try and get on disability than to get out and get a job. You may not be able to do what you'd like, which means you may have to do something that you don't want. If the handouts were taken away, there would be more responsible people today. I do understand there are people that are truly disabled and need the help, but there are many that are not.

My daughter is 29 years old and was diagnosed with ADHD/ADD when she was 3 years old. We never tried for disability, but there are a number of things available for the child. Depending on your income, medications may be available for free or at a reduced rate. Your doctor's office can tell you about this. In school, the child can be tested to see if any special accomodations are required to help the child learn. In my daughter's case, she needed to be near the front of the room so she wouldn't be distracted, the teacher's would check to she if she seemed focused on her subjects, and she was allowed to hand in her scratch paper on math tests. She had a major problems transposing her work onto the written test. Finally, when she graduated from high school (with honors), she received a scholarship to college from a state agency. She finished her degree and has worked and lived on her own for several years. She is not disabled in any sense of the word.

Good luck with your child. One thing we did was keep her busy with extra-curricular stuff like athletics and youth at church.

A very wise man said to me once-"I don't want to start drawing SSI yet because the second I do I have just admitted that what I have and who I am now is the best I'm ever gonna be"

Working helps people become who they are and reach who they can be. Why would you want to take that from your child and get them labeled in the system? My husband has severe ADHD. He is the best in his field because once he learned to use the ADHD he found that it can benifit him in some areas. Don't sell your child short.

Wow. Congrats on living off the system. What exactly is it that makes you truly disabled and unable to make a living for yourself, yet you are sitting here on topix? And to anyone who says I dont know the situation, I dont need to know more than I do. No excuse!! You should be ashamed !!!!!!!!!!

Just curious, how old are you? Have you ever worked? How did you get on disabililty?

No being critical, just wonder what it takes. My daughter is doing well on her own now, but someday she may need the information.

NOBODY, including myself, is jealous of anyone living off the government! I despise losers like that! I get 300 dollars taken out of my check every two weeks in taxes, and THAT is where its going??? Someday someone smart will turn this country around, and then you will be SOL! You AND all the other losers out there!

Its people like "hmmmm" in Beebe that are wrong with this country. It is just down right ignorant for someone with ADD to get a check and not have to work!!!!! No questions! And so, they get their check and go buy beer, sit on the internet, and taunt us hard working folks who actually PAY taxes.

When I was 17 and in high school, I worked at Pizza Hut. I was told by my manager that the first 3 days of the month were the busiest, and most of us would be working, like it or not. I asked just WHY this was so, and he said to me (And this is no lie) "Thats when people get their welfare, SSI, disability and stuff...so they all go out to eat" F THAT!!!!!!!!!! I dont pay into corrupt government systems for lazy pieces of s*** to go out and eat pizza!

I'm not judging you, but I do wonder. Have you gotten a second opinion on your daughter? It is very unusual for a child with only ADHD to be so uncontrollable that they are unable to atend school. I would have to guess that either she has a more severe problem, or you need to look into a better teacher for her.
