are there real winners in this so called contest or do you have to advertise in the sun to win ? i know for a fact b/c i own a business and had over 200 votes for my business but wasnt picked. I had relatives and friends all fill out the so called ballot and i dropped them off. when i asked how many votes the winner had in my line of business i was told around 100. somthing does indeed sound fishy, but then again it is the jonesboro sun. just thought folks would want to know what a scam it is

Then they can justify to their advertisers how the ads are really reaching their target audience. I can imagine the sales pitch:

"You should keep advertising with us since so many of your customers obviously read the newspaper and voted for you."

I guess they really wouldn't sell much ad space if they had a contest winner that was able to win without the newspapers help. They would prove that the winner didn't need to advertise with them if that were the case.

I can't decide who to vote for in the category of "Best Newspaper That Starts with the Word Jonesboro and Rhymes with Jonesboro Fun."

I bet that if you started a business milking goats and advertised it in the Sun, next year they would add Best Goat Milker to the awards.

How about adding the category of "Best Liberal Politician A$$ Licking Newspaper"? Then they could drop of bundles of ballot forms to be filled out at Berry's, Lincoln's, and Causey's offices.(Just like a real democratic election)

In catagories where, there are only two or three contenders, I think it's just rotated from year to year. I too, would like to see the vote totals. Some are a given, due to lack of competition, but others, who knows.

I know of a business that won this year. They were notified they had won and were told they would get a banner to hang and was given a rate sheet if they wanted to advertise. This business has never advertised with the Sun before.

Also, the previous multiple year winner still advertises with them.

Unlike Occasions, which is strictly driven by who will advertise, the Sun contest is legit.

The votes are counted by a group of people who do not work for the paper & unless 70% of the ballot isn't complete it is not counted.

The business that win are Local Fav by our readers!

Yeah, right...The Sun is liberal. And its owner, the ultra-conservative Paxton Media Group, just doesn't have the power to control these smalltown renegade journalists.

Like most conservatives, you wouldn't know how to define "liberal" with a dictionary; people like you just ape what you hear Glenn Beck spouting off. Anything you don't like or understand becomes "liberal."

Do your research and learn about Paxton Media Group, the jackasses who own The Sun. They're arch-conservatives, and they operate by taking over small town newspapers. They then begin churning out non-news. Sure, The Sun includes a few legitimate columnists (like Leonard Pitts), but that's because a portion of their audience expects substance. An op-ed page that isn't diverse is bad for newspaper business (as any dumbass knows), so don't pretend The Sun is liberal just because you occasionally enounter a writer who isn't cheerleading your social conservative superheroes.

If the Sun were more conservative, I'd think about subscribing. Maybe if we all got together & contacted Paxton Media they would change the paper for the better. Thanks for the info!!
too much cheating

A few years ago one of my employees took it upon herself to fill out hundreds of those things, and yes we won, which didn't seem like a victory to me because I never cheat on anything. She kept bragging about it and I never understood how she could do that. The next year I told her not to do it, and if I won I wanted it to be for real. We didn't win, but I still think we're the best and I feel better about it all. I guess some of my competition did what we did the year before because their business is a complete joke and there is NO WAY it would have ever been chosen. I'm just being honest. It's proof that cheating can be done with these "honors" but I won't have any part in it.My Lord would be shakin' his finger at me and nothing is worth that!

It's not legitimate; it's all about scamming advertisers for dollars. 70% of revenue is from advertising profits.
