Has anyone else noticed since the whole countrys economy has hit bottom that the whole population of people in general are becoming more dishonest by trying to steal or embezzel money or take things that are not rightfully theirs? People are becoming bad neighbors and not doing what they know is right in their own heart and just becoming so self centered. Seems as though something really bad happens every day due to not caring or being greedy. It honestly makes me want to sell everything I have and move to a secluded place in the hills far far away from all this evil. Its so depressing. Maybe if I pray hard enough and ask God for help maybe he can make it all go away.

yes, you are right.......and those of us that are less tolerant to b.s. are the ones stressing and wringing our hands over it.

I'm going to be honest here........I would love to have my family around me, having a great time, etc.....but I'm looking kind of forward to it all coming to an end. Hate to be a killjoy, but when you just work all of the time, then your family is working when you are not......and you can't really go out and enjoy life as you should be able to, in fear of being raped, murdered, or at least robbed.........then it's not really fun anymore.

You are so right on that one. Its the people whom care and try really hard that are paying the price through extreme stress and depression. Also when children are raised they see their parents as role models and when they observe them doing bad things they think its ok to act the same. Our children are getting worse and worse generation after generation.

With America's economy in the gutter, lawmakers pledge to cut back—except, apparently, when it comes to fancy trips around the globe at the expense of taxpayers and special interests. Laura Colarusso reports on the troubling spike in congressional travel.

With gas prices pinching the wallet and the national debt mounting, members of Congress proclaim that they feel Americans’ pain and are committed to cutting back. Just not one of their favorite perks—globetrotting to far-flung locations at the expense of taxpayers and special interests.

Lawmakers’ trips are up sharply during the first five months of 2011, erasing any memory of Hill leaders pledging just last summer to rein in travel costs, a Daily Beast review of congressional trip reports shows.

The pledges of travel austerity have been replaced this spring with fresh images of lawmakers strolling down an ornate European street with their spouses or touring the Bosphorus by boat—all supposedly in the name of doing the people’s business.

Not a bad business if you can get it.

“This is an important issue for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the fact that millions of dollars are spent on flying lawmakers all around the world,” says Craig Holman of Public Citizen, a consumer advocacy group.“It is a form of influence peddling when sponsored by private entities. When the government pays for it, we need to know that tax dollars are being used wisely instead of funding junkets.”

Lawmakers can travel at taxpayers' expense or accept free trips to symposiums paid for by academic institutions and think tanks. The latter often gets lawmakers and their family members to exotic destinations for a little food for thought and a whole lot of wining and dining.

Take, for instance, the 20 lawmakers from both parties—with all but one spouse in tow—who were ferried off to Vienna for a weeklong conference on nuclear proliferation. They stayed in style at Intercontinental Hotel.

That trip cost about $225,000 and was paid for by the elite Aspen Institute think tank.

In all, lawmakers have taken more than 200 trips financed by private groups, costing more than $1 million since January. That’s almost double the amount spent during the first five months in 2010 and well above the first five of months of 2007, before Americans were swept into a recession and trillion-dollar-plus budget deficits.

Even some of the new GOP freshmen—who rose to power on a platform of federal frugality—have gotten in on the travel action.

Dozens more congressional trips were footed by taxpayers, supposedly in the name of research. Whether a trip is truly a fact-finding mission—or a corporate-sponsored junket or political theater—is often in the eye of the beholder.

How about 100 or 150 years ago? You think people lived all fun and games? Enjoy life? You have a good life, good job, family, etc., and there are many that have none of those things. Happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have. Stop and count your blessings once in awhile and I think you will see you have a wonderful life when you really stop and really think about it. I have nothing special in this world, just an ordinary person, but my children live far away, I am not married, have a couple of people that I really count as friends, and I am blessed abundantly. I have no money to speak of and probably never will, but that's ok. I have things that money cannot buy, starting with my health and the health of my family. Yeah, they live far away and I don't get to see them often, but isn't that the way it really should be? I raised them to be independent and they are. They have good jobs, I don't have to worry about them being on the streets, they have never used drugs, never been in trouble of any kind. If I never have more than I do this very day, I have been blessed abundantly in this life. All you have to do is stop and count your blessings and you will see, you have more than you think. Cheer up and have a good day.

I am with you, I have thought for awhile it would be great to have 80 acres out in the sticks, and this world is hurtling towards the end and it is going to get ugly. The time when people have what they have worked for is GONE. All the free cell phones and free this and that we working tax payers have had to provide has ruined this nation. I am blessed, and I know this is just the way things were written to end and it is coming to pass. They can call me a bible thumper if they want, but it is better to believe and be wrong than to be a non believer and find out you were wrong!!!! God bless you all and be ready because there will come a time when you will be afraid and you WILL pray for God to hear you and help you.

Is this really a shock to anyone? When you destroy land & keep building, you can't get it back. When you become money hungry & spend to the point of a materialistic coma, you've lost your reality roots. When you constantly down on whats beneath you & step on it to get where your going, eventually there won't be anyone left to step on. When you knowingly kill the ozone layer to look good in your huge man truck or make a profit in big business, it's gone, you can't replace it. Everything is manifested by greed. Honestly, it's too dang late to get mother earth back. But I'm not giving up, not going to live in fear, nor hide. We created this chaos in one form or another...Now it's time to own it. You can discuss types of people all you want. Fact is, without a planet... there are no people.

uhhhhh, not really sure why you posted that to me. I don't whine over what I don't have. I feel VERY blessed in that department. In fact, I have far far more than I deserve.
I am whining because of how evil, dangerous and scary the world is getting. Seems like you can't even enjoy what little time you have off. I try to work hard and make an honest living, my husband works very hard, we have done what we thought was right and made our children work hard..........but you have to worry about some thug breaking in and stealing your stuff whilst you are at work, at the end of the day, you almost feel like you can't leave your home, in fear of becoming a victim of 'violent' crime.
Yah, I am getting really bummed over all of the horrible violent rapes, murders, home invasions, people walking up with guns and robbing people when they are walking across parking lots to go to work.
I'm getting cynical about crime, I guess........just don't know where you got that I am complaining over 'things', such as material things, because that's zero concern in my life. It's not all about that crap anyway........I would just like to feel safe enough to go for a walk after dinner, ya' know?

For those who think they have it tough now --AGREE-- has a wonderful idea. 80 acres out in the “sticks” with your own efforts and nature taking care of your needs will certainly change your prospective on the world. My Father had this same dream when he got home from the Big War. There were 6 of us starting a new life on 80 acres out in the “sticks” with 1 cow and a team of rough broke horses. Being a proud man my father never believed in welfare so we set out with what little money a Corporal could save from his Army pay and started a new life. This new start for my family was my reality and to this day gives me a solid foundation that I compare most everything to. When you eat a mess of Poke Salad and remember it as one of the best meals you can remember because it is the first fresh thing you have had in months then you have something to compare your next trip the supermarket to. By the way we didn’t call it the “sticks” we called it home. People getting more evil? Not really but they are getting soft.

Doing a mild comparison, to hear my grandparents talk about the "good old days", they were good. Nobody ever met a stranger. You shared what you had. Group gathering when a house needed to be built or a new baby arrived. People cared & helped one another. They knew their neighbors, that's why you didn't have to lock your doors. You had a handful of greedy carpet baggers (if you don't know what that is, look it up) Everyone else was poor, they had modest living & made due. When they could get something a little lavish, such as an automobile, folks were happy for them. In return they'd help others who didn't have a way to go...... So how did we get from there to here? Any guesses?

We got here because as a whole people began to worship sex, money, and material goods instead of the God of Isaac, Abraham, and Jacob. Worshiping Him means abundant love, abundant love means caring for one another and being joyful and prospering in all the ways that matter; worshiping money means the world is your toilet and other human beings just worthless floaters whose value lies only in what you can get from them for yourself. When the money worshipers became the majority, we wound up like we are today. If you study world events with an open mind, you'll see it's true everywhere today.

I don't think the economy has much to do with what dirty, lowdown, rotten, filthy, lying, evil bastards the majority of people living in Jonesboro are. They're being bred (in-bred) and raised to be that way and raising their own crop of demonic bastards to keep the trend growing. I travel all over the U.S. and many parts of the world and have never, ever seen the number and degree of just plain scum I see every time I'm here in Jonesboro. You few sane people who seem to see what a mess your in -- best of luck to you.

I agree with the greed part. It's the "Mine, mine, mine" & "More, more, more" disease. Our government isn't setting a very good example for us to follow, now are they? They are however displaying the falsehood of being well off & spending as if they're debt free. As adults we know better than to mimic what we see. Sadly, most run wild like they have no concept of what selfish behavior is & have become addicted to greed like it's crack.

Anybody who didn't see a long time ago how evil the general population is getting either wasn't paying attention or is so evil that that's what looks normal to them.
