BUT it is not a donation you are SELLING your BLOOD for DRUGS.

I am a relocated ER RN selling plasma so I can get my license here locally - broke, single parent. Most of these people are mentally challenged addicts & alcoholics. Street people. The company definitely parks itself on skid row on purpose.

Calling them names reveals how you feel about yourself, not an understanding for what is going on.

You know some of us work hard, make decent money and are still short every month. I found this thread because I need the money from donating right now. I have a corporate job, make very good money, but am divorcing and had to file Chapter 13 bankruptcy to keep my ex and my two kids in the house I still pay for but no longer live in. She destroyed us financially by not working for 4 years essentially cutting our income in half and when the bottom fell out of the real estate market selling the house became impossible.$1750 a month comes off the top of my paycheck every month for the BR plus I insure all of them for another $500 a month and pay another $400 against a 401(k) loan I took out to try and avoid the bankruptcy. So $2650 a month never makes it to me and I had to move back in with my parents to keep my kids under the only roof they have ever known. I need to donate and get paid so that I can have gas money to get to work and kick a few extra bucks to my kids. So please think before you pigeon hole all of us into your hateful, ignorant boxes. And FYI, when I was doing alright financially I donated blood for free.
Dude, I've been there...still am...I wish you the best of luck.

I help manage one, and although there might be some questionable donors, many of them are college students, retired, looking to make extra gas/pocket money in a recession, business owners with free time, etc. Bottom line: For whatever reasons people decide to donate their plasma, it saves lives. We are flooded every year with letters from people who receive life saving, plasma derived medicines, essentially thanking these "people pimping themselves out for drug money" as you wrongfully noted. OUR SOLDIERS, Hemophiliacs, burn victims, children plagued immunology disorders, those with organ transplants etc. appreciate these donations.
I went to a DCI to sell plasma. Why can't you do it if you are treated for migraines? Does that really affect the plasma?

I "sell" my plasma twice a week. I don't do it for drugs. I do it because its easy money (please note I work 40 hours a week at a good job) And seriously guy, do you really think most drug addicts are remotely healthy enough to donate?

Migraines can potentially be linked to cardiac or neurological issues which place you at risk when donating plasma. Donating plasma leaves you dehydrated. If you have any condition which may cause problem with blood clotting or vasospasm, you cannot donate for your own safety.

I am a nurse and lost my job in December. Have not found another job yet, mostly due to politics in New Mexico.
I started donating plasma recently for money for food and gas. I finally started receiving my UI after an 8 week battle. However, I am continuing to donate for the money to start a wood shop at home and get out of nursing.(Still love nursing but have had enough of the administrative head games after 18 years of it.)
Few years ago, I donated plasma for extra money. Bought my daughter her bicycle that way.
The fact that it saves lives is definitely an added emotional benefit for me.
Drugs? Yeah, not unless you count vitamins.

The buying and selling of Blood and Plasma is a multi-billion dollar per year business. Plasma is more commercial than Blood and can not be synthetically replicated.
According to FDA regulations, truly donated plasma and blood, without any funds exchanging hands between the donor and the organization, is the only blood or plasma that can be transfused into humans. If an individual is paid any money at all, for their time or for their plasma, it can not be used to "Save Lives" per se and the Plasma that is donated to drug and research companies is refined down and made into medicines that "Save Lives".
But What is the cost of those medicines to those that would die without them?$50,000.00 to $80,000.00 per year, which can really change the slogan, "We Save Lives" to "We Cant Afford to Live"
face it people, your not saving lives by donating to a plasma center of any kind. its understandable that donations are done because there is a need of money but these companies give you a base fee of 15.00 and flip that into ten or 20 times that amount.
If you really want to saves lives, find a non profit organization that you can donate to because that donation WILL be able to get to a recipient and stop listening to the lies that the plasma centers tell you

Can you provide the link to the FDA regulations that prohibits the use of plasma from patients who have been compensated for their time? That's very interesting and I would like to read the full regs on that. Thank you.

I process the plasma and it is used for hypo-allergenic items. Not immunological disorders.
