They do pay a lot better but don't go overboard. They pay no more than average income which can still be tough to make it against the cost of living unless of course you are being given extra money from somewhere.

bad that it makes you mad that a person doesn't tip
It is kind of bad for a person to ask money from someone who really needs it themselves.

They're not supposed to ask, we're supposed to give graciously for good service.

Well most factories start out at $10 an hour or more, plus the factory job would give you insurance. I really doubt Sonic offers insurance. If you are a struggling mother, as the post said she was, then the extra money plus insurance for her and her child would seem better. If I had a family to support, I would find a better way to do it than working at Sonic.

Maybe so but with the cost of gas and food these days my family is my 1st priority. I will not tip someone for bringing my food a few feet to my car. If you do not like making $4.25 an hour, get another job! Don't whine about not getting tipped for something as little as bringing someone their food a few feet. I do tip waiters/waitresses because they do ALOT more than carhops do. I think carhops think that they are supposed to get tipped. Tipping is not a given these days first of all. Now in the old days at Sonic, they used to put the tray on your window and check on you every know and then.....in those cases they deserve a tip. That doesn't happen anymore. Like I said in my previous post, once they bring you your food, you do not ever see them again. Can you tell me why I should tip you for bringing me my food a few feet away from your door? What special thing did you do that deserves a tip that other fast food places don't do? I do tip and tip very well people who I think deserves a tip. I don't, however, just hand out money to everyone that think they deserve something for just bringing my food only a few steps from your door. Hell, my paper guy leaves a tip envelope in my mailbox for delivering my paper, even though it is his job to deliver it.
That basically says it all right there. I totally agree. Most of these car hops have little to do with preparing or bagging your food. All they do is bring it to your car. The people who deserve the real credit or tip.....is the one inside busting his/her butt to make your food. When I go to Sonic, most of the car hops are resting on the counter or chit chatting with each other at the front. Now tell me, how does that deserve a tip?

No. No no no. Unless you've worked at a sonic, you have no idea. We make $4.00 an hour because people started tipping years ago. We're expected to make tips. We work our butts off doing a lot more than walking food a few feet to cars. I come home from work exhausted every day. It's a non stop job. Always on your feet, not allowed to sit down. We're expected to know how to do everything inside the store as well as run food out to stuck up customers who think they're entitled to everything. Nothing makes me more mad than a rude customer who has me making trips in and out of the store to bring them extra stuff they didn't ask for to begin with, only to have them not tip me. I work HARD. The majority of the carhops I work with deserve every penny of tips we make and more. At my sonic, we're expected to run back inside after taking out an order, lift heavy stuff inside (such as buckets of ice, cases of ice cream), make drinks and ice cream, take orders, we do everything except cook. We work hard to give you a good experience when you come by. Don't act like we don't do anything, because we do. That's incredibly disrespectful, and only shows how ignorant you truly are.

The workers at every other fast food place do all of that (other than bringing food out) and do not receive tips at most of them. McDonald's, Wendy's, Hardee's, and Taco Bell employees do the same things you do but don't receive tips. The only basis for tips at all is that you bring the food out to us. We are not responsible for what your employer does, and if you don't earn enough tips to reach minimum wage in any pay period, your employer has to make up the difference anyway.

Do you think the guys at McDonald's are making more than minimum wage for an entry-level job like that?

Actually no, carhops make $5.25 an hour. I work at sonic so I believe I'd know that we do not make minimum wage.

I work at sonic too. We only get $4 :( but there's nice people out there who do realize how hard we work and give us the tips that we deserve.

Well at the sonics I go to, I see them standing around not doing anything until their order is ready to take out. And as far as you having to run back in to get something for a customer, THATS YOUR JOB! People forget that fact. The CUSTOMER makes it where you are so lucky to have a job! If you are complaining about not getting a tip, FIND ANOTHER JOB! It really gets me young people thinking they are entitled to something. Now if you run back in to get me extra things I didn't ask for, you will get tipped, but you already complain about that which tells me alot about you. And finnaly for the ignorant comment, who is working for $4 a hour?

Let me just say I ALWAYS tip the carhops. It might be just some change I have or sometimes a little more. Even today when they were busy and running out orders in this heat and I had to wait a little longer than usual, I sill tipped what I could. I appreciate what they do and I know I wouldn't want that job, so thanks for doing it carhops.
That being said, the poster named Lindsey might need to tone it down on the use of "the tips we deserve" and "deserve every penny of tips we make and more". Tips are earned from service and not because you think you deserve them. If you have a problem with your base salary, take it up with the management or owner. If you feel the job is too hard, go to work somewhere else. It might be just because of your age and lack of maturity, but if you want people to be sympathetic to your cause, your sense of entitlement shouldn't be your argument here.

Well, when I tip they have to do something deserving of a tip. When I go to Sonic, I usually park close to the door, so all they have to walk is maybe 5-10 feet. I don't see that deserves a tip for anything. Now in the old days, when Sonic used to put the tray on your window and the carhops would come out and check on you(ketchup,salt,nakins..ect) yeah I think they would deserve a tip for that, but that doesn't happen anymore. I think people tip just to tip, and there is nothing wrong with that, I just don't do it. What I find wrong, is the carhops getting on here, complaining and thinking they are entitled to a tip and make rude comments about the people that don't tip. If you tip, good for you, but don't b*tch about me not tipping for something that takes them 5 seconds and 5 feet to do.

I tend to tip heavily at Sonic because most of the girls are little hotties and I want them to remember the guy who noticed!

I seldom eat fast food but occasionally I stop at Sonic to give the Munchkins a treat when their mother is not around. I have always got service that was convenient and pleasant. I see no reason not to tip any different than I would at a sit down eatery.

If you want a general discussion about tipping then I think that on a basic level this form of paying employees is archaic and in need of a general overhaul.

I think that if a business owner can't subtracts from revenue the costs of running the business, including cost of goods sold, operating expenses i.e. wages then I believe a hard look at the p&l is needed to reassess the business plan.
