If Lockport's next police chief is a double dipper in the trying financial times we live in it would be very creepy.

Lockport's next police chief will be Terry Lemming of Lemont, a retired Illinois State Police Commander, so, yes, he will be drawing a six-figure pension from the state of Illinois while he is also drawing a six-figure salary from Lockport.

How do you know who it will be? I pay pretty close attention, but hadn't heard any other names.

I actually talked to my alderman about a week ago and he thought it was still 50/50 that Draksler gets it.

He is retiring and entering a new job, and according to State Law he has this right and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. He is educated and experienced and finished high in the interview the rumor goes. If picked, I am sure he will do a great job in spite of our Mr. Toad. He will steal this name so get ready, he sits and writes lies all day long. What a lonely life he has!

No one knows anything yet. Educated and experienced is fine....but...do you mean that there are no other ed's and ex's out there that are NOT retired and able to do the job in this small town with literally NO RAMPANT CRIME RATE ?? I could care less HOW HIGH he finished in whatever interview was conducted and by whomever...the residents of Lockport and Illinois, for that matter, do NOT need another double dipper feeding at the taxpayer trough like a hog. Maybe you think it's ok but a huge number of people think otherwise. The State law is dead wrong and should be repealed "yesterday". You are a bigger fool if you think it's OK....and if a double dipper is hired by Streit and approved by this council...they are ALL fools for going along with the sham. Government retirees should stay retired or go plant flowers in some garden instead of continually picking our pockets for thousands of dollars. If Streit DOES appoint a double dipper....HE...SHOULD RESIGN for being irresponsible with taxpayer money....meaning Illinois money as well !

Most not all chiefs have worked in the public sector at other places, as a result most have the time to be able retire from their current position and take a job elsewhere and in some instances accrue a second pension while collecting on the first. Meaning if you hire from the outside this is the situation that can occur. I'm not sure the pension laws for law enforcement, but if you are a tier 1 person in the fire service you can retire at age fifty. If you started at 21 that gives you a 72.5% pension based on your last years salary. Wait a year and that goes to 75%. Now unless your spouse or significant other is working with benefits or your municipality is picking up the cost of healthcare most people are going to try and get a another job to bridge that time until medicare. If you happen to be in the public sector and a job opens up that you are qualified for why not apply? Or a better question is what would your pick have to do for you???? Tell us, please! You know the answer and we sure do...political hacks, one and all. It is apparent when you read your letters in the newspapers and your posts on here. How does it feel to be outnumbered? Great, right?

You know what you are talking about and he does not. He will never answer you because he does not know how. He is bent out of shape, this serial poster, because he can't manipulate the situation like he use to. All of his inaccurate writings have hurt the prospects, not helped. Thanks for your information.

Chumbalone may not know anything, but the appointment of Terry Lemming as Lockport's new police chief is the worst-kept secret in town. Just go to the city website and look at the agenda for Wednesday's city council meeting.

No matter what a pension will be paid to someone. Just because he started working young enough to start another shouldn't exclude him. Draksler killed someone by accident and got away with it. How much did that cost the city and insurance.

Isn't Draksler the officer who was driving recklessly to a fight call and killed someone on Division St many years ago. Nothing happen to him because Antole took care of it for him. This sounds like the good ole boys are upset the man they took care of all these years isn't getting the job like they told him he would when it came to his turn.

Thanks for the astute "explanation". Quite frankly, I DO NOT care. We are not here to pay pensions to people TWICE...no matter what they did or do ! Maybe you feel it's OK...I, and many others, feel IT IS WRONG. You feel OK about it...then YOU write the pension checks for these HOGS. If someone retires at 50....I for one do not want to insure their well being for the next 30 or 40 years of their lives at 70K a crack..with compounded COLA raises. Thousands of people are having their pensions reduced OR eliminated from the PRIVATE sector but not these people. Great that they DID THEIR TIME....but enough is enough. Sorry, Lockport doesn't need it. There are plenty of "candidates" that could do just as good a job and maybe better than a "double dipper" who is just there to collect another handout from the tax paying public...like you and I. Don't want Draksler...fine...but you mean to tell us there is NO ONE ELSE besides a retiree capable of handling this sleepy town ???? If not...then you have been easily bamboozled .

All of this crap started because Colarelli wants to screw up the Police Dept, just like everything else he has touched.

I heard the Chamber of Commerce is going bankrupt, is it? Isn't Colarelli the president of the Chamber?

Some quick facts about living high on the hog. The median household income from 2007-2011 in the United States was 52,762. The median salary for firefighters was 45,250 and police 55,110. Retiring at age 56 (By the way do you really want a 63 year old firefighter or patrol officer?) and basing the pension off the tier 2 (tier 2 employees have to work 35 years to receive a full pension and contributes 11-12% of their salary towards the pension. Conservatively figure 11% on 45k that firefighter would have contributed $173,250 towards their own pension that figure does no factor in the interest accrued. Now if they earned a full pension of 75% based on that median salary that comes to just under 34,000 a year. The average firefighter lives only 5-7 years after retirement. Additionally I do not pay into social security, why? Because I receive a pension. I am eligible to receive it because I have paid into and have enough quarters, but at 30% of what I would have received. Then there's health insurance. Unless I go on my wife's horrible state plan my premium for an HMO per month is $1,375. SO much for living high on the hog.

Chum,

I agree with a lot of what you say, but keep in mind that police, fire and military are potentially putting their lives on the line in dangerous situations. In my opinion they should be able to retire before the politicians, municipal employees, etc...

Also, keep in mind that public unions and pensions are only a part of our state's fiscal disaster and Lockport doesn't have an option to opt out of this crappy system.

back to your larger assertion...
Do you really think that Lockport could get an outside that is qualified to be Chief that isn't eligible for a pension? That would mean no one with significant police, military, FBI or other governmental experience. So what experience would this qualified candidate have?

IF (IF) Dave isn't getting the job done what specifically would you have liked the mayor to do differently? What other non-partisan group could they have gotten opinions from or who is that other candidate that you'd go for (the candidate that's not bamboozling us)?

Personally, I don't know what they could have done differently (again, assuming Dave isn't getting the job done), but you obviously have other ideas - I'd be interested to hear them.

Look...we are commenting on a candidate that could be receiving a huge salary, benifits AND another pension. Fact is there are these guys out there, both Police and Fire Chiefs, double dipping ! Plain and simple. You did your job...thank you very much...now please stay retired and go away peacefully! That is all I'm saying. STAY AWAY FROM DOUBLE DIPPERS...that's all...no matter how "experienced" they are. Lockport ain't Chicago or Joliet with MONUMENTAL problems ! We have 25K residents...not 2 million...and with NO CRIME WAVES to speak of. You mean to tell me there are no candidates out there that ARE NOT retired Chiefs ??? NONE ??? Someone mentioned some retired guy from Lemont ! What the hell for ?? Lemont ain't much bigger than Lockport ! Fact is this group wants someone other than Draksler...so it seems. Fine...but then why have the guy swinging in the wind for 9 months on the "premise" there is someone "better"...and then look at some guy who is retired and looking for more cash ! Either give it to Draksler or find a non-retired aggressive up and comer with management skills to "manage" the department and it's finances. Sorry..but since when do we need another tag day for retired "Chiefs". NO ONE is advocating taking pensions AWAY from anyone...especially front line people...but ONE IS ENOUGH. Don't like what I say...too bad. Go ask around what taxpayers think about DD's...especially those folks who had a pension ...and it was eliminated or can't "retire" on close to six figures. They are STILL paying taxes to "help out" those DD's. Streit and this council had best be careful...taxpayers have very good memories. The last bunch was replaced....so can this bunch !!
