JOLIET — Police say a 22-year-old man may have used forged documents to give the impression he was a law enforcement officer.

Ryan D. Kursinger, of 11759 Azure Drive in Frankfort, has been operating KRUZ Investigations, a private detective agency since 2010 and has worked as a process server for local attorneys and the city of Joliet, reports said.

“About a month ago, an officer came across his Dodge Charger and stopped (to investigate) because the emergency lights were on,” Cmdr. Brian Benton said. Kursinger’s vehicle also reportedly has a spotlight mounted on the side and laptop computer installed near the dashboard.

“(Kursinger) provided documentation and was released but a memo was sent out to local departments to be aware this individual was a private investigator,” Benton said.

Around 10 a.m. Tuesday, Officer Bill Otis reportedly spotted Kursinger’s Charger parked in back of a “Police Parking” spot at the Will County Courthouse and prepared to write a ticket.

Kursinger was reportedly wearing a bulletproof vest that said “Detective” on it and an investigator badge around his neck. He was also carrying a loaded .45-caliber handgun in his holster.

Only police are allowed to legally wear emblems that say “Officer” or “Agent” on vests or bring weapons into the courthouse.

Otis disarmed Kursinger and found a switchblade knife in his pockets, Benton said. Back at the police station, Otis began to examine the cards Kursinger used as credentials.

“There is a three-year certification requirement for a private investigator to carry a firearm and you have to be 21 to get an investigator’s license,” Benton said.

Kursinger allegedly admitted his P.I.’s license is forged and was arrested on two counts of forgery and one count of unlawful use of a weapon. He was booked into the county jail.

The Charger was impounded and searched. Benton said the investigation into Kursinger’s activities is still ongoing.
