So that's like last quarter with Obama at the helm, right? Nancy Reagan has more balls than Obama.

Reagans legacy is that of a corporate puppet whose soul purpose was to whittle down Teddy Roosevelt's "New Deal" and Johnsons' "Great Society" any other uplifting agenda for the commoners. Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Michelle Bachman are nuttier than fruitcakes. I kind of like them around, the make the Republican party look like fools!

He started the trend and that fact is rarely discussed.
Yeah, except by me!
I especially liked when Reagan played alongside a young Barry Obama in "Bedtime for Bonzo".

Reagan left office after two terms with a 63% approval rating. The GDP was at 7%! Reagan was all about America! Obama is all about America also.....destroying it! Obama couldn't make a pimple on Reagans ass! You are uninformed and misled. That is unfortunate!

This is what we have Reagan to thank for (among other things)- corporate profits running wild, while wages at an all time low. Reagan set the stage for the demise of the middle class. I feel sorry for our grandchildren. As they said in the article, there will be a handful of wealthy "overlords" and the rest "serfs". Keep singing praises to that puppet.

Here's another interesting graph (the last one on the page). I like how they overlay corporate profits as a percentage of GDP with wages as a percentage of GDP. This will be an interesting century for the USofA...

I also find it interesting that corporate profits have really bounced back from the recession, but wages and employment haven't even come close. Way to go bankers! Further the destruction of the middle class!

Corporate profits are up Mike because companies have cut back. No expansion, no hiring, pay and benefit cuts, no growth al all. Put it all in the bank to survive obamanomics. If you owned a company you would do the same. This is corporates response to taxes, levies, regulations, & Obamacare costs. You can't blame them !

one thought to consider, think about the technology and automation boom that took place in the 80s and 90s. That certainly appears to have an influence...

thoughts?

I didn't think of that. I would assume that technology had an impact on corporate profits, but I think the point of the article is to show how the percentage of GDP has gone to the side of corporate profits - Whereas before, there was pretty much a 50/50 split between profits and wages.

It would be interesting to see a similar chart for the last 200 years or so, and compare it to other technological booms (railroads, automobiles, steel, cotton gin...etc).

The only other time you see corporate profits out of sync with wages was during the late 40s and early 50s. Maybe that was effected by the end of WWII? I don't know.

Simple question for you.

What was the debt when Reagan came into office and what was it when he left?

Then calculate what it iwas in 2013 dollars. You might become informed.

Of the post World War II presidents, only Truman (4.8 percent), Kennedy (5.2 percent) and Johnson (5.1 percent) achieved higher average growth rates. Reagan, by contrast, averaged 3.5 percent, Carter 3.3 percent, Nixon 3.1 percent, Bush I and Ford 2.2 percent, and Bush II 1.65 percent.

They are talking about Bill Clinton.Kind f puts your claim into perspective. Please get informed.

Interesting where the Democrats vs Republicans stand.

Just for your knowledge,Reagan has been out of office for almost 30 years.I can't talk about W due to the fact that he left office 5 years ago.You start a topic on a dead President? Lack of consistency equals lack of credibility.Practice what you preach.

If you comprehended the article it's points out your messiah Obama has a low public opinion rating, while Reagan left office with the highest job approval rating of 63%! He was about American Exceptionallism! He proved that. don't forget his 7% GDP !

After looking at this graph a little more, I wonder what happened around 2002 to cause the swing of GDP % to move towards corporate profits. Outsourcing? NAFTA? If that's the case, maybe we can blame Clinton?

Looking at this, maybe I am wrong to blame Reagan. Although I think he did significant damage to the middle class, I think it was something that occurred much later that caused the most damage and the state we are headed for.

Why did corporate profits, after 2002, skyrocket in relation to GDP?

Professor usually I agree with what you say. But Reagan was the ultimate Rino, he was a lib in a Conservative Sheep Skin.

I have watched his name get white washed over and over in the last 30 years. And it is revolting how idolized he has become.

Yeah, he cut taxes when he first got into office, and then raised them the next 7 years, leaving them higher than ever.

He negotiated with terrorists, pursued Nuclear Disarmament, signed into Law an expansion of abortion killing untold thousands of babies, he helped 3 Million Illegals get amnesty, adjusted for inflation Reagan put $6-7 Trillion dollars in debt on during his time.

So dont be one of those who puts him on a Pedestal, it makes you look like an idiot.

There isn't a pedestal good enough for this great man. I hope he haunts you. Nancy too. And she's not even dead.
