Absurd Study

Saint Charles, IL

#22 Nov 14, 2013
I watched the latest city council meeting this morning. I was interested, in particular, in the people who spoke for Draksler. I was impressed by all of the speakers for Draksler especially the lady at the end. It's obvious, we have a police chief. Just because Colarelli, who is pulling the mayor's strings, doesn't like Draksler we have to pay for another study. I heard Colarelli resigned from the police department and now he thinks he can run it. I read about Colarelli going to the police union meeting and getting shut down. Even the cops don't like him. He's a joke and he's the only one who doesn't know it.

I'll bet the people who are on here in defense of the shameful way Draksler is being treated are all Colarelli.

Politics should not pick the next chief...the study is paid for by the taxpayer and let the best and most qualified person secure the position. Political hacks are doing their best to interfere in the decision of how the money is used for this study In other words, let the study show the people that the city is accountable to the public with its use of their tax dollars. No one in business gets just moved up, they have to prove among the pool of people that they are the most qualified (when they are interviewed and placed high on the list) and this study should prove who is the most qualified for the job. I hope the city can account for this study and it was not wasted money and politics wins out! May the best and most qualified among the pool of candidates win. It seems like the political people are really trying very hard to get their case across, too much so to suit us.

When I read that letter in the newspaper from Turner recommending that the mayor keep the chief, I knew something wasn't right with the chief. Turner has always been about himself and it seems that he wants to keep the current chief so that he can make a call when he gets in trouble. Turner likes controlling people - didn't he fire like 8 staff members with long histories with the city when he had control of the council? He didn't care about them at all, so why the sudden loyalty to the chief? There's something shady there.
This is pure cronyism on a councilman's part and the letters in the Legend prove it. The Mayor makes the appointment and not citizens, nor anyone on the council. The study is an honest venture to get away from the state of politics that we had the last four years. Hopefully, it will be adhered to. The present chief can enter into that group and present his credentials like everyone else. There are no more favorites in this city government. It is suppose to be cleaned up. Let not cronyism return to the city of Lockport and show the citizens that you got rid of that at election time. As someone said in a post, let the best person for the job win based on their credentials not who likes them.

That last 2 entries were from Alderman Colarelli.
He knows what's best for us. Just ask him and he will tell you.

It's time this self-absorbed moron left public life and took care of his own tribe. Maybe if he spent less time on this website and more time with his family, he might even remember all of their names.

We don't need or want you Colarelli.

I don't understand why this turned into a Collerelli hate thread. Anytime I see that I figure it's Turner because he's clearly got a man crush on the guy. What a sicko.

Interviews will be going on and may the best man win! This is scaring the h out of the cronies that are political hacks and his friends. There is a demand by some people and others to put anyone in there that meets their standards. May the best person be chosen and the Mayor not be intimidated by a few. Let the dollars for the survey prove their point and honesty overtake this city in a big way If the interim chief comes out first then he should get it but if someone else does then the Mayor needs to do the right thing and recommend him. How come certain council members did not care to stand up for our staff of this city that was doing a fine job. Instead they were pressured to leave their posts and get higher paying jobs because they were all wonderful attributes and with high level profiles. One by one they left our city and you only have to look east of Farrell and see what they accomplished. It was a great deal.S It does not make sense that they will not let the process proceed and the Mayor gets to make the appointment. Take time and think this out! Will the pressures of chronism pervail or will honesty prevail? Let's watch this one with interest. This city will only prosper when people are accountable for the taxpayer's money being spent honestly. It will not prosper in the vain that it was run the last four years and our reputation of fairness to all is at stake and that means everyone who has applied for this position and gets an interview. Let the best person win it! Show the voters we are a new city after the last four years of growing discontent on so many levels. The election showed that!

If this isn't about Colarelli's politics and is only about "getting the best", why weren't outside candidates interviewed for city engineer and public works director? Let's be realistic here.

I agree - let the best man win. Whomever is recommended by this committee should be selected. If the current chief finishes last in the selection process, than it will be clear that Colarelli knew what he was talking about.

Because this is about the police chief's job not the director or engineer smart guy and there was a different council making decisions back then. But then again Kelly T or Jim M. You already know that.

Nice try. This mayor and this council. Check your facts.

This appt. is the Mayor's to make and based on the interviews he had, will see who came out first and who came out last and all the in betweens. You are trying to devert the subject. This study cost us big money to do. We are not concerned with others right now, only this appt. And the city wants the best person for the job that is why they had this study and spent twenty thousand dollars for it. Think yourself! There are people who knows who came out on top and the answer lies in the facts of this interview! We are now having to sort this out and be honest to our town. In the face of political bystanders pulling and demanding the Mayor choose someone, let us see what he will do and the members of this city council . He was elected in this town because people were fed up with the gang that was pursuing us relentlessly with their majority talk and everything their way. The city council is also accountable for twenty thousand dollars they spent for this study. The people voted for change! I hope we got it.

Mayor Streit has made it clear that he is not opposed to Lt. Drexler being appoint as the next chief of police. What the mayor is refusing to do is to align himself with the factions that are lobbying him to appoint Dave without conducting a talent search that should identify the most suitable candidate.
He is also refusing to align himself with the factions that are opposed to Drexler becoming the next chief of police.
By remaining independent of the various factions, he will be making the choice of the new police chief in the best interests of the city, which is exactly what we elected him to do.

Taxpayer pays for study wrote:
<quoted text> If the taxpayers paid for a study for a new police chief, then the taxpayers money should be honored and the best candidate chosen. This is not a popularity contest. It is one that is based on who is best for the job with the qualifications of all the submitted enties into the study. Otherwise, it shows that it was not intended to choose the person and the person being chosen does not have to commit to the same qualifications that are being expected of all the entries. I think it shows weakness (what we had before) IF the study is not given the proper perspective and the use of taxpayer money is not respected! I hope it is and the person chosen is the best. Plus I feel the public has a right to know if candidates were interviewed for the position. Let the best person win...based on the money spent for the study...not a few people's opinion of the matter. I think honesty shows.
Tell me if the results of the study that cost us twenty thousand dollars is not going to be used, why was it done? It is a big waste of money if the results are not used and it is not fair to all concerned if the study results are not put to use. I am speaking of downright fairness to all. Will we get to know the results?

All this yapping about political hacks and cronys is absolutely mind boggling. Lockport ain't Chicago or some other huge city. It's a small town run by small time people and the police force has been great and competently managed. Accusing the acting chief of being a political hack is an insult to him and the people who spoke up for him. Are THEY all hacks too ??? Is Mr. Perretta a hack ??? He came out in support of the acting chief. The REAL hacks are the ones going through all this "studying" malarkey. 20 grand of tax money for another silly study. If Streit has been around this town for as long as he SAYS he has...he SHOULD KNOW about the acting chief AND the WHOLE department and how well it has performed over the years. However...he is listening to HIS crony, who dissed the acting chief at a rank and file meeting he had no business attending. NOPE...this will turn out to be a power grab and an introductory lesson in who is now the BOSS, along with a head bobbing council, to insure that he gets what he wants...and what his "handler, consummate string puller and "PR" guru wants. Would anyone be surprised if a new chief is a friend of Benson...the new carpetbagger from Joliet. Independent my rear end. The REAL cronys are just around the corner. Same ZOO...different animals....it's just a matter of time.

Do one has accused Draxler of being a political hack. Just because he has done the job for the last year as an interim doesn't mean he is the best choice for the job. Apparently "competent" is all you want. I don't know what the choices are but if there is someone who is beyond beyond competent, why not choose them?

He is at it again, the twister. You are the political hack, read it again. They consider you and your letters and your so called friends the hacks. What is the reason you are behind this. There is some glory in it for you! Let the Mayor do his job, he does not need you and your intimidation. Yes, we know you hate Pete, who cares? Not us. Power grab, of course, there were no power grabs at the last council were there? This is the Mayor's decision, he is the CEO. the city administrator has not done anything to you, but then again no one has to. You are a loser! You really care about yourself, that is. Come on..twist some more, carpetbagger.

Why would the city spend $20,000.00 for the Police Chief search and not spend anywhere near that amount for the search on the new City Administrator, who has the most important job in the city? We did hear the Mayor say that he has never hired a Police Chief before, well he never hired a City Administrator before either. This was a pure payback to the High and Mighty Alderman who got him elected.

I keep trying to figure where everyone gets 20k from. The meeting I watched the price was said to be 7k. Anyone know for sure?

At one of the meetings Marynowski advised they spent $20K on Draksler. Not sure if that was to bring him up to speed to fill the chief position or all his training since he has been employeed there.
