I am a Manhattan resident of 20 yrs and grew up in New Lenox. I like Manhattan as it reminds me of New Lenox when I was growing up...pre big-box stores, strip malls, traffic and some outsiders' "vision" for what it has turned into. In reading comments about Manhattan it seems that everyone just wants to bitch about how much they hate it, can't wait to get out, it sucks, complain about the entire govermental system etc. etc. etc. I have a question for everyone with this mindset. If u don't like the past or current Manhattan, why the hell did u move your ass out here? I would believe common sense would imply u move to a community because U like it. Yet the attitude seems to be "I guess I'll move there if I have to but there are going to have to be some changes" Quit your bitching and move if U don't like it and don't ruin it for everyone that does not have "issues" with everything about the town. You'll end up moving in a few years anyway as your "vision" for Manhattan will turn it into the very place U moved here from....

The houses cost about the same now as 20 years ago you dope that's why we can't move. The only thing that has gone up is taxes. Peoples house values are down 30% of what we paid for them. What a moron .

We have great bars here, and lots of events based on drinking and getting drunk. That reminds me, the Irish drunk festival is coming up!

What a load of crap you are. You whine that people whine about moving out and then you chastize them and insist they move out. This hillrod thinking is why people want to move out - that and Borgo's taxes (School & Village). The only for sure thing I can say about your buddy Doyle is that the exponential increaser in taxes are not due to him. On the otherhand, some would say they are. If Doyle had not spooked the lining daylight out of people with Lakewood Homes, Borgo would never had been given the job as Mayor and would have never splurged for a new , highly expensive school. So as the norm goes;;;with that said, why don't you just shutup.

I agree Doyle created this mess, I remember the meeting at the Jr High 8 years ago, he had to run and get out people wanted his head because of Lakewood. They are all crooks, it's a politician thing you would not understand.

We bought Manhattan because of the school district was suppose to be the best around, and the towns plan to expand into a real town.
We found that the schools were good, but bit really outstanding.
We found there were absorbent "fee" for everything in a way to raise taxes without putting it in the tax bills. Not only is this shady, but it keeps us from writing it off on our taxes.
We found the value has continued to drop while the rest of the country has stabilized, a long time ago.
We want to stick around another year for our daughter to graduate, but as it sits now, we will loose $120k on our house. Hind sight we could have put her in a private school and stayed in Chicago. But it was a gamble we choose, and lost. We really don't see the town ever pulling out of this rut, so we are going to take the loss and sell then. It will suck, but staying will suck more.

So there you have it. Now there are plenty of folks who can understand that the combination of Doyle and then Borgo has been disasterous. It IS a giant mess. IT CAN BE corrected. It will take time and new leadership. Nothing more and nothing less.

Butch, wasn't Doyle the Village head when these farms were sold and platted? Therefore, the covenants, rules and restrictions were of Doyle's administration. And if they were so loosie goosie on the standards, then goes back to Doyle. Technically, you may be correct the Doyle was "overall" better than borgo, but does mean we should bring him back. No way do I want to be part of that. They should both be gone.

The only thing I will say is that I commend the absolute loyalty to Doyle. It is astonishing to observe. Custer had a last stand and Doyle will have his too. Just absolutely remarkable the narrow-mindedness in Manhattan. I'm wee bit surprised that the town hasn't flipped into an Amish community. There's something to ponder; how would the Irish and an Amish blend be? Like a Reeses' cup perhaps - chocolate and peanut butter. It might just work, the green and the pale.

Really!
The Germans started this town and owned all the land, the Irish just came here to get drunk and destroy the town. Ha, Ha,Ha!( they did a great job at that also.)
Do you know the history?

Well Borgo put the halt on building when he first got elected, and it's been on halt since, except high taxes and special taxes. And a large staff making big bucks at are expense. So tell me what Borgo has done four 8 years? I have been here 50 + years and have not seen it as bad as it is know.

Halt. That's clever like in Hogan's Heros. The reference in historical terms is the present day. Forget the founding fathers of Manhattan since nobody saw fit to erect any statues of build a mini musuem to visit. Obviously no one has cared enough to erect a brick and mortar structure to secure the past. Thus it most not be too important. But looking over the landscape, if a museum were to be formed, it would house the so-called achievements of Doyle and Borgo. Doyle' s measurements would be likely housed in the attic and Borgo's remnants would be on a map rolled up in stuffed in the back of a closet. But what would be so funny is that admission to the museum would be considered free to the residents of Manhattan as long as they can produce a utility bill. On that bill there would be a new tax for admission into the museum called a "point". Every month one point (1%) of the total utility bill would be charged to maintain the museum. I still wonder if the green and the pale would blend well. And certainly the pale Amish could build a museum in a week. The green Irish could then christen it.

I'm voting for Mike and I think everyone else should too. He represents all of us that bought a house here and are losing value and all of us that have kids and want a brighter future for them. He is in the same boat as the rest of us and he may not have been Mayor before but there has to be a first time eventually and that brings with it a fresh perspective. Stop complaining and vote to change it. Things cant get worse. Oh and good job on Tom Doyle's part for passing out flyers at the parsde exposing some of Borgos crap. Lol. Pretty funny.
