Without knowing, I would guess the school didnt have a choice. LW gave them the date, you know the high schools have their own graduation to set up for, athletic events, and numerous other events. When you have to you use others facility then you take what you get. LW and NL are two different districts, and yes work together at times, but LW may have other things planned the nest week, or earlier in the week. That's my guess.
Side note, go to your kids graduation. I have a feeling there will be more vacation weekends through out the year.
That's probably a pretty good guess. Before the newer high schools were built, Mokena and Frankfort probably used the same facilities as well. Never thought about the number of area schools using the same place.

1. That has nothing to do with the extra day.
2. I don't understand why people on this thread don't just call the school to fund out.
3. People need to get priorities straight, your child is graduating 8th grade!! Enjoy it with them and quit worrying about your weekend plans. How do you think you are making your child feel? This is their time to enjoy a once in a lifetime event. THEIR 8th grade graduation!!

1. The state requires a specific number of attendance days for students and if you take a snow day you have to make it up.

2. Calling the school will get you their answer, but it is really not a big deal, people are just talking here, although some people have turned it into an expose on bad parenting. This forum IS for talking and exchanging ideas. Why do people always try to stifle that?

3. Nobody is prioritizing anything. They are just asking! Jeez!!!!

The snow make up day is scheduled for tuesday May 28, a day that was orginally scheduled as a no school day. Snow day make up has nothing to do with this thread.

Graduating students have never had to make up a snow day..
snow day make up days typically fall in June, and graduation is always in May.

Gotcha. I did not realize you were specifically talking about seniors.

The teacher could have planned the trip a few weeks after school gets out to be safe?

Since when are conservatives angry? The left are the angry intolerable people. Just read all there posts on these blogs. Some are down right frightening.

They are not talking about seniors. 8th graders always graduate the Thursday or Friday before Memorial Day and they do not go the last 4 or 5 days with grades k-7. Once they graduate they are done. It has been this way for a long long time. It's a nice treat for the 8th grade graduating class. LW and New Lenox are two entirely different districts with different school calendars. There was one snow day to make up this year. May 28th was originally a teacher institute day as it has been for the last 30 years or so. In an effort not to bring everyday back on Monday June 3rd for 2 hours (because that's how long the last day is this year) they have made May 28th a half day to make up that snow day. I'm sure someone somewhere is griping about it ruining their long weekend.

An eighth grade graduation ceremony is completely unnecessary in this day and age. This isn't the 19th century. These kids still have four years of high school to get through. I understand posters like the Professor never got past the eighth grade. But besides him, who else has their eighth grade framed and displayed for all too see?

Everything I've heard is hearsay. LWW was not double-booked. People on the board and administrators have children also...think about it. Light bulb just go off in your head?

Your post is hearsay. I have a child who is graduating 8th grade and Martino sent a notice out and called every 8th grade parent. They gave the specific reason of a scheduling conflict at LWW on May 24th for why Martino's graduation ceremony was changed to Central. This only affects 8th grade families, administration, and staff of this district so why everyone else in this town cares is just dumb.

For anyone to plan any type graduation ceremony on a Friday night before a 3 day holiday weekend is not intelligent scheduling and doesn't make any common sense. Just because it's been that way for a long time is not sensible reasoning, it's an excuse for poor planning.

The graduations normally occured in the first week of June. They have never occurred around memorial day before. This problem was caused by both the school administration from both Lincolnway and from New Lenox. New Lenox plans it now on one night for their convenience and never really had any input from the parents. They sent one message just telling parents it was changed and that was it. No reason was given and in speaking with other parents we all feel that this was poorly done. The administration had no concern about us or about any plans that would have evolved around a 3 day weekend. I'm hearing Lincolnway double booked that night for their gym and New Lenox early booked their graduations. So let's not be childish and realize that it was the schools that did this to our kids and their families. It would have been so much better to have it on Thursday night then none of this would be even a topic for discussion.. Oh well thank you New Lenox administration.

A message from MARTINO JR HIGH SCHOOL

Good Evening,

Due to an unforeseen scheduling conflict Martino Junior High School graduation ceremony will be held at Lincoln Way Central High School instead of Lincoln Way West on Friday, May 24th at 7:00pm.

We would like to thank the Lincoln Way District for allowing us to use their facilities to host our ceremony.

Thank you.

The above is the message and email that was sent out to all 8th grade families at Martino. Maybe Liberty didn't give a reason, but Martino did. The junior high schools have been graduating in May for sometime and the 8th grade students have gotten out of the last several days of school due to graduating in May for quite sometime. This is your child's graduation. It is one year and one night. Many of you need to get a grip. Stop making your kids feel bad because you can't get moving on your partying weekend until late Friday night or Saturday morning. If you all can't pencil your child's graduation into your schedules that is your problem, not the district's and certainly not the other 800 or so families involved between the two schools. I knew my kid was graduating the last week of May since the beginning of the school year. Why didn't the person who started this thread? I knew there was a location change since March, why didn't the person who started this thread? Read your emails and check your messages for crying out loud. They told everyone and gave plenty of notice about the location change.

You are right! Don't be childish. We're fortunate to have it on Friday night, lucky that the school districts work together so that we can have the ceremony at a larger facility- the high school. I'm also glad it's over Memorial Day weekend. I can have my party on Sunday and no one has to work the next day. Thank you New Lenox administration! We're looking forward to the graduation weekend.

It's been Memorial Day weekend for years and not the 1st week of June. At least last 3/4 years.

Agreed! Wait and see the district will consider changing this practice because of one or two whiners. Nevermind the hundreds of others who are completely satisfied with the schedule. I'm glad it's on a Friday night on Memorial weekend too. It's nice to not have to worry about school for younger ones and work the next day.
