Does anybody know what the administrators at Liberty were thinking scheduling Graduations ceremonies on the Friday night before Memorial day weekend?

Isn't that how it's always been? The two junior highs switch Thrs and Fr every year.

That is how it has been for some time. It's odd both Liberty and Martino are graduating on the same night. The district calendar has them listed both on the 24th, one at West and one at Central. How are board members and administration going to be in two places at once? I have an 8th grader at Martino and we got a notice several weeks ago the location was changing from West to Central. It must be because they are doing it on the same night this year.

I just find it very odd that they would schedule it on a day when many families, including mine are leaving for vacation.

Typical.... It's your kids graduation and all your worried about is that extra day of vacation. And then its the schools fault. Ya think you would have checked out the calender the first of the year before you made plans.
Now you should say WTF. Bitch Bitch Bitch

You have a kid graduating and you don't bother to check the schedule before you make vacation plans? I guess the district better change everything for your one family. It has been this way for a long time. School is in session on the 24th so unless you're one of those people who pull their kids out of school for vacation what is this going to set you back, a few hours on leaving?

I heard Lincoln-Way West double booked their gym. So the solution was to move the one graduation to Central Field House. Since they now had two locations they probably decided to have them both on Friday night as a convenience to the families.

I would think your kids' graduation should have been thought of before you scheduled your vacation.

I think many of you are missing the point.

Graduation is important to all involved but if I am reading the original poster's comment correctly he/she is saying that with all the possible options why would the school schedule on the first night of a traditional "take off" weekend. I would think that would be a general consideration rather than an individual inconvenience as some are thinking.

Unless they have a really good reason and no other option, I'd say that was poor time management.

No one is missing the point, its always been this way. Mine graduated on a Thursday night before Memorial day, big deal. The kids get out of school a few days after Memorial day anyway, then you got all summer. Of of school May 27th, half a day May 28th and then about an hour on May 31st. If you want to complain, complain about that one hour on Friday the 31st.

The printed school calendar from the fall states Liberty graduates on Thurs. the 23, Martino Fri. the 24.

Has this changed?

I can understand if it changed how vacation plans may be effected. In the orginal scheduled calendar, Liberty 8th graders last day is thur. the 23.

I thought the state abolished the one hour habit. You might want to check on that one.

IMO, just because something has always been done that way isn't a really good reason. You are right, it isn't really a big deal, but there are a lot of days in a week, why that one? Just sayin.

There was a snow day this school year. All 122 district schools go an extra day.

LOL, very true. If it was scheduled on a Friday morning my mother would be complaining that it interfered with her hair appointment. Can't please everyone for sure.

But don't you think it is kind of obvious that this one would be particularly bad not only for parents but for extended family and anyone else who has a life outside of the school calendar?

On the scale of horrible things, this doesn't even register and I agree it is not a huge deal, but I can see how it could possibly affect a larger number of families and I do not think it would be wrong for parents to point out the inconvenience.

I am a woman who tends to think that all things are possible if you plan it right.

I once had a teacher tell me that she cant plan a cruise vacation until at least a week after school is scheduled to end because they never know if they need to use snow days

I think general vacations are different than traditional three day weekends where most people get Monday off. General vacations can be flexible but three day holiday weekends are pretty much set in stone and sometimes are valuable down time for those who get little to no vacation.

IMO, while not necessary, it would be a courtesy for the school district to take this into consideration when planning their calendar.

I don't think schools need to consult with the entire community of graduating families before setting a graduation date. If it's important to you be there. If your little 3 day weekend is more important be there. Geez, you people will always find something to gripe about. The calendar is put out far in advance so people can make the appropriate decisions regarding how to spend their longer weekends. Were you all planning on having your kids skip school on the 24th? School goes until 2:50 and then graduation is at 7. Leave for your long weekends after the ceremony. This is not rocket science people. Did you all want the school to see your personal calendars before setting the first day of school too? The graduation ceremony is not mandatory so choose what is more important to you, a 3 day weekend away or a once in a lifetime event for your kids.

Of course schools should not have to consult with an entire group of graduating parents but you would think they would be sharp enough to recognize a holiday that has been celebrated on the same weekend every year since the end of the Civil War.

You are right, it is not rocket science. I think the original poster asked a fair question.....why? They certainly did not deserve to be made to feel as though they were devaluing an important event in their child's life.....jeez, they just asked a question. And quite honestly, positive change often starts with a question.

Without knowing, I would guess the school didnt have a choice. LW gave them the date, you know the high schools have their own graduation to set up for, athletic events, and numerous other events. When you have to you use others facility then you take what you get. LW and NL are two different districts, and yes work together at times, but LW may have other things planned the nest week, or earlier in the week. That's my guess.

Side note, go to your kids graduation. I have a feeling there will be more vacation weekends through out the year.
