We pay a LOT of money in taxes to the Park District. It didn't use to be that way (and they did a fine job with the money they had) but now it is. So why is it that they still can't put together a decent set of programs? Sure they have added a few things but others have gone by the wayside. Drop-in Gym and Drop-In Basketball and Volleyball don't really count as programs. How about putting in a little effort to organize a league? I mean that is why we pay for a staff isn't it? Also so many of the programs and trips are really just from the New Lenox Park District's brochure. I didn't really need a Manhattan Park District to register for a program in New Lenox. It doesn't take much effort to organize that other than a phone call to New Lenox.

Park District Staff is not paid to be league organizers. The give you the tools so you do some organizing. I am really annoyed with people who talk about paying there taxes and thinking they are owed so much. You pay taxes to the government and where is your rant about schools and things the federal government does not do for you with your tax money.

So you are paid for what? I can rant about the schools and other village services too but the schools village services such as police, water, fire, etc are much more of a necessity than the park district that I pay way too much for.

kids breaking into houses is not the park district's it's the parent's fault for not knowing what there kids are doing. When I grew us kids did plenty in the some without doing bad things. Always had pick up baseball, basketball or football games. Never sat in a park and smoke cigarettes and trying to break our necks trying to do tricks on a skateboards. Teach your kids, discipline them once in a while instead of spoiling them into trouble with the law. Remember what happens to kids whose parents have no time for them or pawns them off to a taxing entity while you a off enjoying yourself. The end up shooting up schools and movie theater because parents can't be bothered

You idiots have NO CLUE how good you have it! Most small towns like this don't have crap for the kids to do! I agree with RPG 100%!

I never said anything about the park district having anything to do with how kids behave. I can agree with it being the parent's responsibility. That wasn't the purpose of this post. I just disagree with saying that the park district isn't paid to run leagues. The fact that they are paid and expect others to volunteer to run them is the issue. There are plenty of park districts that run leagues.

You are so damn right. Seems like there are two other boards around here where they expect others to "volunteer" while they, themselves - the board and board members collect paychecks. They want those paychecks so it will pay half of their yearly property taxes on their principal residences. Classic baloney and classic Manhattan self-dealing.

Well the Park Board doesn't collect a paycheck but it has staff that does. So don't really have a problem with the 'Board'. They don't necessarily put the programs together and I understand that. However, the director collects a pretty decent wage thanks to her hubby that was able to make decisions about her raises while they were vehemently denying that they were having an affair (very ethically wrong). She also has a staff under her and they are who I was referring to. Leagues can actually be self-sustaining financially and if done right the money could actually fund other jobs to help run it and officiate it. Look at lots of other park districts and you will find this to be the case.

Great introspective Cool Beanz. I like it - alot. The brochure should be printed on newsprint to save cashola for programs to support the youngins.

It is on their website too. No need to mail one to every resident. Those that want a hard copy can pick one up.

There is an open position on the park board if you want to make a difference.

Talk about making a $100,000 between the Gainous couple, to do what shall I ask? Julie Popp $62k a year to call New Lenox and ask to share the activities they have for their community and put them in ours and pay Non resident prices! Nice, way to go Manhattan! maybe the park district should worry about cleaning up Central Park with tons of cigarette butts and beer cans all over the ground from the men's softball league that plays there and get these kids more to do here in here in town instead of families having to travel to New Lenox for everything!
