Does anyone know why Mr. A is no longer teaching at LWC. I heard there may have been misconduct against students, which doesn't make sense because he is still coaching gymnastics

I heard that too many students were failing his math class. Now if that had anything to do with his teaching style or if those students just didn't want to put the effort in, I do not know.

That southtown star report really makes this look like a fishy lw210 story. Someone should get the Patch to report on this too

The teacher had a long list of 'petty offenses' during teaching and coaching. The final mistake was when he humiliated a student in front of an entire class.

LW has gotten rid of veteran teachers mid-year before this. In other cases, the school packaged a financial offer that would make it worth the instructor's while to quit rather than go through an all-but-impossible-to-succeed remedial procedure. Keep in mind that a teacher who may be close to being canned is going to want a lawyer and those people don't work for free.

Over 15 years ago an LW teacher vanished at Easter break. It was later found that the teacher was paid $80K for the next year,$80K the next, and then $20K in each of the next four years to get him to retirement age. Yep, that's $240,000 over six years NOT to teach. In the case of this recent termination they will likely do the same.

Mind you, neither instructor to which I referred did any one huge thing (a la the terminations of two social studies teachers for sex with students)wrong. It's just that the administration likely believed the teachers (ironically both are/were math people) were ticking time bombs.

To the taxpayers, this doesn't sound just. After all, who wouldn't want 1/4 of a million dollars for NOT doing a job? On the other hand, try firing a non-felonious teacher who's walked a tight rope for decades. All but impossible.

It will cost over $240,000 to fire a teacher at that level in lawyer fees and man hours.so why not pay the money, get a better teacher in there ASAP for our kids, and it's over. Oh I am a LW taxpayer as well. And I like my option better then your Long List.

I agree and disagree with you, IB.

Disagree? Stern remedial programs can be put upon a shaky teacher during their every-other-year evaluations. They can be nearly impossible for a poor teacher (or even a decent one) to master. In some cases one might say that a marginal teacher is backed into a corner and the 'package' evolves. Bad teachers who aren't predators or crminals CAN be terminated without a horrible, drawn-out process.

Agree? No amount of money can untangle the damage or neglect an uncaring ior neglectful teacher or coach could bring on young minds. I guess the best thing is for a district to never grant tenure - much less hire - to someone they couldn't swiftly fire if a gross enough violation occurred.

BTW, I, too, am an LW taxpayer who isn't crazy about shelling out big bucks in a predicament like this. Worse yet, it's pretty crappy to be funding and operating an unneeded high school operating at barely 50% of capacity.

His class was very difficult even for those students who never had a problem with math. When I went to parent teacher conferences this year Mr. A's appointment times were behind by 45 min. There were alot of parents complaining about his class. He would fly through the lesson, leaving the kids confused. Not enough practice in order to pass their tests. My child is less stressed about Math since he has been gone.

I totally agree!!!!! My child told me repeatedly how he would tell the kids what losers they are, there was no hope for them, ridicule and make fun of kids with disabilities.. Sooo glad he is gone! He was a crappy teacher and a worse human being !

Was also cruel as a coach, especially to girls. Many, many girls who were superior gymnasts either quit mid-season or never came back after one.

Made a comment once to a young lady we know that "I should just let you fall and break your neck". He was supposed to be spotting her and refused! Needless to say, this girl - very talented - never was a member of his teams again. She still tells people how he was the worst coach she ever had. She is a physicial trainer today and many of her philosophies were crafted by doing the OPPOSITE of what Skippy displayed.

Good riddance to him.

Any respectful parent would understand that teachers are not overpaid. People look at them as babysitters or daycare these days. If the school or teacher ever called my parents I'd get my ass kicked. Now it's get the kids bullshit story first....the teacher is lying or out to get me.

Reading out of a book to a class full of kids does not a teacher make. A majority of my teachers did this, so I spent alot of my own time in libraries and watching educational TV, and I still do. Just like with law enforcement, I think the bad or mediocre teachers gang up to have more bargaining power then the good ones.

With that being said, I also think good teachers aren't rewarded enough in comparison to the bad or mediocre ones. Too much of office politics goes on.
