Now that we all got the lunch menus and order forms what does everyone think? They can't seem to keep themselves happy with any lunch service because it seems they are always changing them. I heard a lot of kitchen staff lost their jobs over the new lunch service. We all know it's the minimum wage kitchen staff that is the financial problem in this district. It's not the over-inflated salaries of some piggy administrators.
On another note they wasted money on thousands of mailings for this. This could have been done online as could teacher assignments. Most families have internet access and for the few who don't they could snail mail those. Where is the financial responsibility here?

I am not too sure about the new lunch program myself. However, it does appear to be more healthier than past lunches. If I read everything correctly, I will still be charged for a lunch if my child orders it but for some reason is not at school (either sick or needs to go home before lunch for an injury). I guess I will call District Office on Monday to get some clarification on that item unless someone can inform me otherwise. What about a child that forgets his/her lunch? Will they have extras on hand just in case?

It says they will not refund or credit for absences or any other reason. They must have entered into a contract that they still have to pay for lunches whether or not a child is at school. That is unfair since we have no idea when or if our kid's will be absent. It's the schools that cause all the absences because some people keep their kids home when they are sick and others don't give two hoots and send them to school sick and the school keeps them. There was a kid last year that went home throwing up in the afternoon and was right back there the next morning at drop off. The 24 hour rule was not enforced which is why the rest of our kid's get sick. That being said I do hope MOOSHELL hasn't ruined pizza day for the kids. They should at least still get pizza day. We all know the teachers and office staff get their pizzas, Jimmy Johns,Portillos, and every other take out place from New Lenox at lunch lmao.

Last year's lunches may not have been the healthiest, but they were kid friendly. This year it looks like it's all cold sandwiches. Not only that, but while they are healthier choices, I bet more than half of that food ends up in the trash. Most kids don't eat that much for lunch at school. We'll just opt out this year. I am capable of making a sandwich.

I agree. Last year had better options. I guess it's boars head sandwiches this year. I'm not paying 3 bucks for something i can make at home.

I agree. Last years menu was more kid friendly. Also I will not pay $3 for a cold sandwich lunch. It's definitely a nice try but not a good fit for the younger crowd. I liked giving my child an option of a hot lunch. I guess no longer so!

They don't want to serve lunch. They have been trying to do away with hot lunch for years. Most kids leave the lunch room hungry. I bet Sass doesn't go hungry if his belly size is any indication anyway. How long of a contract did these geniuses sign with this lunch provider?

After receiving the lunch menu, I sent it back with a letter and asked that the money that was in my son's account be refunded to me as he will not eat anything on this menu. First, who wants to eat a cold lunch every day. Not me. I'm sure the teachers and administration have a microwave that they can use to warm up their lunches. Second, who wants to eat a sandwich every day. Not me. Third, who wants to pick out their lunch a month in advance. How do you know that your child still wants a ham and swiss cheese sandwich on September 19th. Also, how can they still charge $3.00 for a sandwich. At least with the old menu, they had two choices to pick from and were able to pick their lunch on that day. As a working mom and dad who who depended on hot lunch 2 - 3 times a week made our lives a littler easier. The district should have sent home a survey during the school year and surveyed the parents. I would like to know who the "team" was that decided on this new menu because every parent that I have talked to about this new menu are not happy with it.

No more Marchelloni pizza day? That was the one day a month my kids ate hot lunch! Any way you look at it- the hot lunches that were provided in the past were disgusting. On days when I would bring lunch to school for my kids and saw what the other kids were eating- I completely understood why they never wanted hot lunch! Sauce shouldn't come in a plastic pouch with an expiration date on it.
I am sure, however- that they will still do "ice cream day" on Tuesdays and Thursdays.... healthy choices only my behind!

Wow, are you serious? You are raising a real whiner if you think this lunch option will be so traumatizing. Eating a cold lunch everyday is fine. Did it my whole childhood and guess what, I survived!! Eating a sandwich everyday is OK too, big deal, geesh. And poor babies, having to pick something a few weeks ahead of time, what a horrid thing to expect! Do this, send your kid on a mission trip to central america where kids eat garbage, then they'll appreciate the PB&J, bag of chips and an apple. Honestly, your rant was ridiculous.

Also, how many kids' lunches are we subsidizing where the parents COULD very well pack a simple lunch everyday. Some families are on hard times, sure. But if you are on lunch program, maybe forgo expensive sports, dinners out, concerts, etc. Tired of subsidizing people who can't budget 2 nickels. What are the requirements for free lunch? Does the district even try to police this thoroughly?

Wait until word gets out that parents will no longer be allowed to come have lunch at the schools. That will give all of you a few more things to complain about.

It was instituted as Hot Lunch and it sounds like it has evolved into Convenient Lunch. Very sad for the kids.

In all honesty, I think your comparison to garbage eating kids in Central America is a little ridiculous. We all want better for our kids and a decent hot lunch does not seem too much to ask from a district with questionable expenditures and advertised high standards.

IMO option, the school's job is to teach, not feed kids. Since when is it anyone's responsibility to feed your kids other than you? Are people so lazy they can't pack a basic lunch anymore? Why must anyone feed YOUR kids? that's YOUR job. Be glad the school provides anything. Yes, the district could diminish its hefty salaries to administrators. But very few in this town are engaged enough to vote for people on the school board, so don't complain when they make decisions you don't like. This debate is beyond silly.

You are right, it is not the school's job to feed the kids. But it is a proven fact that well fed and nourished children learn better and isn't that really the point? Not who makes the lunch.

I think it is silly to criticize parents who only want the best for their child. If you want to criticize anyone, criticize the parents who don't give a crap. I work with young children and you would not believe the number of kids that are sent to school without breakfast because their parents think they had a damn good reason for doing so.

I say hip, hip, hooray for those who stand up for well fed kids and are willing to pay for it themselves. They deserve a pat on the back.
