I am amazed that Mahoney's has survived all these years. If not for the good ol'e boy network it probably would have folded long ago. The cronies hanging around the gun department remind me of old shellshocked veterans.........always the same old conversations over heard....."Hey Willis, you going to the shoot Saturday?", etc.
The prices are outrageous. Of course side deals with local companies that provide safety shoes with a "whopping" discount to employees help keep the joint in business. The service is ghastly, with sinister and high hatted employees who would love to show you their gun carry permit.
Being that Dan is in good with the local government, it seems any other establishment so crammed and cramped would be cited for fire code violations.
All in all, if you enjoy paying high prices, being treated as a criminal, and have no claustrophobic tendencies, this may be the place for you to shop.

I agree about the prices being high but disagree about the "shellshocked" veterans hanging around .Veterans with that problem usally stay away from that type of place we have been there done that.

What exactly is wrong with someone having a Carry Permit? They do have higher end merchandise. And they have a very good firearms selection. If you are looking for anything other than a bolt action hunting rifle, forget about Dick's. Mahoneys does keep a good selection of pistols and even good semi auto "assault Rifle" clones as well. I guarantee you wont find an AR-15 or SIG 556 at Dick's.

Mahoneys has a great selection of camping hiking equipment, if you like paying twice what it is worth, find it 1/2 price on internet easy!! Dan has FORGOT the average Joe.

"What exactly is wrong with someone having a Carry Permit?" Nothing wrong with having a gun carry permit, I just think the hired help at Mahoneys would love to show you theirs and possibly whip out the iron just to impress a buyer, or maybe shoot you in the foot for sport.

Mahoneys is something else alright. The only saving grace for Mahoneys is they stock a great deal of merchandise which means you will probably find what you are looking for.
BUT, their guns are overpriced that is for sure, Their powder is in line with the rest. Their bullets are too and their ammo is too,
I really don't like going over there but they do kinda have one by the throat so to speak.
None of the gun stores will give anything decent on trade ins. None Of Them. Their no loaded concealed carry gun policy is for the birds because they are in effect saying a permit holder is not capable of loaded carry which says volumns about Dan and Sean Mahoney.
I would like to see them boycotted for a while over that.
After John, Finn and Paul and the old ones left it did go into a higher priced less cordial atmosphere.
Volunteer Gun shop will be better pricewise on a gun than Mahoneys if you don't mind to order is as their Inventory is never much in quanity.
Plus if you need something you can't find anywhere else Terry or Matt will try to get it for you. With the rest of then don't count on it.

I was going to go by Mahoneys but after reading this it confirms my need to avoid it. I was there years ago buying boots and the guy was the worst csr I have ever encountered. I thought after all these years I might give them another shot but with all these people saying these things there has to be something to it. I also have been to Volunteer Guns in Bristol and they are more than glad to help and very friendly..Thanks for the post and some day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord.

Tried calling to ask for hours, they picked up the phone and hung it immediately back up, was a quarter till six. Takes 10 seconds to tell me your operating hours.

So... FU buddies, I told all my friends about you, avoid the Abingdon store like the plague.

Prices have gone up there way beyond reason on Guns and trading a gun there is a insult. I discovered a really nice Gun Store in Jonesborough. Called Byrd's Speciality Firearms. They trade and have some of the best prices I have seen. Not a big store but sure has the bigest used selection of used guns I have seen in the area.

I bought a ruger 9mm pistol there last week, price was good but I asked for a box of target ammo. The guy grabbed 40cal shells. I got all the way home and noticed called back and they were very rude.

i have a hard time believing most of the people on this thread have actually been in mahoneys. anybody that would think for a second that Dick's is anywhere close to them in service or products (or even price in most cases) is way off base.

treestands for one example are as cheap or cheaper at mahoney's, and they are far better quality.

larry in the gun dept knows as much about guns as everybody at Dick's put together.

they have an excellent bow shop, top notch accessories and clothing, and their prices are very comparable with Cabelas and other top notch outfitter stores.

all this sounds like some sour grapes to me.

I have never been a fan of Mahoneys but was close by and decided to pick up some ammo. While brouseing their handguns I overheard a conversation between a couple looking to buy two handguns and the salesperson working there. They said that they were on a budget and were inquiring if Mahoneys had any Hipoint pistols. The salespersons response was, we don't sell those kind of guns here, the people who buy those go out and commit crimes with them. I was shocked to hear this sort of comment! Does this mean that anyone who cant afford a $1500 Kimber is a criminal simpley because they want an inexpensive gun for protection. I found his attitude very arrogent, rude, and totally uncalled for! I'm no fan of Hipoint Firearms myself, but if that was all that I could afford I wouldn't expect to be insulted and treated like a felon. I have bought my last item from Mahoneys! I will never shop there again! All my buisness now goes to Tri Cities Gun Depot! They treat you with respect reguardless of the size of you wallet. I wouldn't stop at Mahoneys again if they were giving away guns for free!!

It seems that Dan really likes his merchandise, 98% of items are ’’way overpriced’’ and yes the staff does have an attitude of supremacy. Well excuse me…while I drive over to Dicks at the Mall & deal with real people
If you can find a "real person" over at Dick's then you go ahead. Plus Dick's and Mahoney's are not apples to apples. Mahoney's is a specialty shop. The only thing that they have in common is that they both sell kayaks, guns, and clothing. Dick's sells low end kayaks and Mahoney's sells only the best. Dick's doesn't even carry handguns nor do they carry the selection. Oh and next time you are in there go and pick out 10 clothing items and write down the price and then drive over to Mahoney's and compare. I guarantee that Mahoney's will always be cheaper. Dick's sells their Columbia clothing at sticker price for about a month and then they mark it down and it still isn't as cheap as what Mahoney's sells it for.

I guarantee you won't find a better deal on safes than Mahoney's. If their prices seem high it is because they only sell good safes. The safes Dick's and Walmart are junk. They couldn't withstand a firecracker.

Seriously you are going to judge a store because they made one mistake. Listen to yourself, you are avoiding and ruining the reputation of a business because you deemed them imperfect to your standards. How many times have you made a mistake in your life? Things happen man, learn to forgive and forget. You're smarter than that.

P.S.- Mahoney's is a great place. You won't find a more personal shopping experience.
