Hello forum folks!

I've just moved to JC last week - I'm a family & children's photographer, among my many hats. Just putting it out there that I'm starting to book sessions now, either at a location of your choosing, or my at my family farm. My website is http://www.heatherapplegatephotography.com

Check me out sometime if you're wanting great photos!

Boy you have some balls... Moving into a area and already stepping on the toes of other photographers. Not a cool thing to do....

What are you talking about Mike? YOu don't think someone has the right to try to advertise for their own business? That's funny... SO what? IF the other photographers have their own clients, great.. they'll keep them. But for others who do not, or maybe who have moved to JC themselves recently, why not give him a chance? I need a dog photographer for my hounds. lol

All photographers have their own style of shooting... what one family or individual likes, another doesn't. I don't photograph in a studio, a lot of people like a studio look, so they would go to another photographer.

Giving Mike the benefit of the doubt that he was just practicing his sarcasm...

Has the digital camera put a damper on the photographers business? Me and a buddy pondered this recently..

I don't thinks so. Yes, more people have cameras, but I've found even those who go and buy a nice DSLR don't have or take the time to learn to use it properly.

The market is a bit flooded for "fine art photography"... many upload their snapshots of flowers, their cat, or their backyard to POD sites hoping to make sales, not realizing people won't buy what they can shoot themselves.

I was hired over the summer to document a family trip at Disney World - yes, the family could have taken photos themselves, but they wanted everyone in the pictures, and didn't want to have to ask people every 5 minutes to take a group shot of them. They were very happy with the results, and all of their friends agreed it was well worth the cost of hiring a pro.

It seems like everybody and their brother wants to be a photographer right now, my sister in law is doing it. I guess all the competition is a good thing, it should make the good ones get even better to stay ahead..

Cheese Puff Daddy - You are 100% right and all these self appointed fly by night photographers wanting to set up business all they are going to do is give the rest of us professional photographers a bad name. Not saying the poster heaphotography is a fly by night photographer or anything like that. What the poster should is check the yellow pages and see all the photographers in the tri cities area and he would understand the area is overwhelmed with photographers. There are only 5 or so that is even worth calling as they have a good education and knowledge of photography and the business or photography.

What most people does not realize is photography is a art that not only requires a solid education but commitment and a open mind.

After 25 plus years in the photography field I have heard all the horror stories about people calling them self a photographer and in the same breath they are ripping people off and posing their work as art.

Hey, lay into it, heap. Since most of Topix is a bunch of people quarreling, why not try to post your talents? I wish you luck, bud. Seems many good photographers need a break and I hope you get one. Olan Mills? Enuff said!

Never mind. I had you confused with another photographer named Heather I heard about this week.

I can tell by your website that you are probably just getting started. There are a lot of good photographers in this area, & a lot of classes & seminars available. Also a lot of area art classes where you can learn about composition & background, etc. Good luck!
