Hi everybody! Okay I am living in Memphis, TN as of now and am really ready for a change. I have the option to go to ETSU or UT Health Science Center. I am really tired of Memphis and everything in it and ready for a change but I need to know where would be a good place to live. I have heard good and bad about Johnson City. So where are some places outside of JC that would still be practical drive to ETSU...and no I dont want to live on the dorms =)

By "outside JC" do you mean beyond the city limits? There are many apartments around the university itself. My daughter lived in Evergreen Terrace apartments for a while, just a couple blocks from campus. Many students live there.

KDUN, if you are looking for a place to rent other than living on campus, don't rent from a lady by the name of Joanne Patterson. She owns some places on the Tree Streets and is a crappy landlord. A student, who was a good renter by the way rented from the Pattersons for a year. Rent was never late! She had to pay a monts rent as a deposit. She was told that the temperatured stayed "72" year around. When it was time for the air to come on, guess what, it didn't. She had to call Ms. Patterson and was told there was nothing wrong with the AC. After another long, hot night, she called again. AC guy told her that it wasn't set to go on AC. Then she decided to replace the roof. During the construction, the roof was left uncovered, that night a rain storm came, rain came through the celing fan over the bed, soaking the bed, running down the closed and ruined clothes and shoes. Mrs. Patterson didn't even volunteer to bring in a shopvac to soak up the water, not to mention paying for the ruined clothes. One time she locked herself out of the apartment, Mrs Patterson charged her 25.00 to come and unlock the door. When she decided to move, the 30 day notice was given. The tenant and her mom (who took a day off work) cleaned and cleaned all day. The place was spotless. Guess what that has been almost 30 days and Mrs. Patterson has not refunded the one months deposit. Oh, yeah I forgot to tell you that they never moved the yard, by the looks of it only once a month. Anyway we are still waiting on the deposit. So beware of Mrs. Patterson. She is just out to cheat college students.

Whatever you do, don't live at University Edge. They are not part of the school but they're run like dorms. The management is terrible and you pay a crap load of money for it. My roommates and I hate it here but there is NO way out of the lease. We had mold in our apartment and after neglecting it for several weeks they finally decided to move us into a different apartment but the whole process took over a month and then they were awful to deal with. The amenities they list aren't as great as it sounds, for example: there computer lab with "free printing" only has 3 computers and the printer is ALWAYS out of ink or jammed. The tanning bed is a piece of crap in a closet and its always nasty! There are very few visitor parking spots and they're all over by the baseball field so if there are even any available your guests have to walk quite a ways if you're not in the first building. They can come into your apartment whenever they want for no reason (and they do!) During one "inspection" they left a note for my roommate telling here it could use "tidying" because she had clothes and stuff on the floor. Anything else you want to know about this hell-hole just ask!!

A popular area to rent is the "Tree Streets" which are all named after trees. They're located adjacent to campus and are within walking distance of downtown. Other than that there are apartments to rent all over the place that cater to students. Stay away from Buc Ridge and University edge. Evergreen Terrace is also within walking distance and are pretty well maintained.
