Stay away from this place. All they care about is the money.

Please tell more, I went to these guys 8 years after Dr. Hamel, Neurosurgeon, left me worse after surgery than before.

So please tell before I get into more trouble, cannot take much more.

I'm sorry to hear you ended up worse than you started out.

My experience with them: I've been seeing them for pain management for a while. All of a sudden, they tell me they are no longer prescribing breakthrough medications for any patients. They gave me some explanation about the FDA telling them that breakthrough medications make long-acting medications not work and, "We should never have been prescribing them in the first place."

After researching this on my own (including contacting the FDA and other chronic pain organizations) I've found out that everything they told me about this was false and the opposite is true - long-acting medication plus a short-acting medication for breakthrough pain is still the gold standard for pain relief worldwide.

Also, the person at the FDA said that the FDA doesn't tell doctors how to prescribe or how to do their job.

I know I've done nothing wrong. I follow the contract exactly, so I really don't know what's going on. I'm trying to convince myself that their office was simply misinformed because I hate the idea that I'm being lied to.

I'm considering seeking pain care elsewhere, but I'm still not sure what to do.

To clarify: I was originally told that it was East TN Brain & Spine Center's policy to not prescribe breakthrough medications anymore, but then they quickly changed their tone and said that it was the FDA's policy (the FDA has no such policy).

Sorry to hear this, I know what you go thru with. If I did not have my arthritis doctor, I would be in big trouble. She gives me meds for break thru. The only reason is, I have arthritis and myleomylacia (spinal cord injury) they cannot determine how much is coming from my neck and how much is coming from my arthritis and fibro. It is not a good thing to hurt almost 24/7. I dont think the pain every goes away, sometimes it is just managed, feel better some days than others.
Maybe if you have a general practioner, he/she would consider giving you a break thru med.
I have only been to East Tn Brain & Spine just a couple of times, the mylomylacia had progressed is the reason I went, just told me this is debilating and shew wee I feel it sometimes, but continue to work. Good Luck

I'm sorry to hear you're dealing with such a debilitating condition. Thank goodness for your arthritis doctor, though.

Unfortunately, I signed a contract with East TN Brain & Spine, so I can only get my pain meds from them. If I got pain pills from another doctor while still getting pain pills from them, I would get in serious trouble. I either have to stay with them or get all of my pain care somewhere else. I don't think my current GP would take over my pain care. If I knew someone who would, I'd have gone to them right after my last appointment with ETBSC.

From my experience with them, they almost have too much of a positive attitude, if you can believe it. They'll tell you something is debilitating/hurts a ton, but still kind of brush it off and tell you to work and do whatever and act like you're fine.

Their staff has always been friendly, but now that they have misinformed me and don't seem to really understand what I'm going through, I'm seriously looking at my other options.

Yes, I am very grateful for my arthritis Dr. However, I do not know how long she will continue, because most of my pain is really coming from my neck and lower back. I do not want to be tied to a specific Dr., because technology changes oh, so fast. I will be OK as long as arthritis Dr. continues the way she has been. I have been going to her 4+ years, maybe I will be OK.

Good Luck, People dont understand what we go thru with on a daily basis.

I was wondering about them, doing internet search to change my pain clinic. I have a hip that is rotting from the inside but am too young for a hip replacement and also loosing bone mass in my spinal column quite rapidly. Long term pain management is all they can offer me for about 10 more years.

I was going to a clinic out of town for about 2 years, and recently they hired a new nurse that everytime she counted my pills she always said they were incorrect.

this last time I came back with 3 days worth of pills *which was exactly what i was supposed to have." and she stated that I should have had 8 more days of pills (making a 30 day supply actually be a 38 day supply)
No idea where she got her math, but asking for another nurse to count them was declined with no reason why, and they dismissed me from the pain management without the doctor even coming to talk to me about it.

So now I am trying to figure out what to do and my regular doctor is looking around for another clinic to take me. Glad to get the feed back on this. and has anyone else had issues like mine? Im trying to figure out exactly what i should do next time something like this happens. Without pain management I cant walk much less work.
And being a part of my family and a full father to my children and a full husband to my wife is important to me.

Thanks

Waswondering,

What you went through is just plain wrong. If you don't mind telling us, what clinic were you going to that had the incorrect nurse? That is a serious problem (on the clinic's part) and people need to know about it so they can avoid them.

Don't go to ETBSC. They no longer prescribe breakthrough medication "to all of our patients" and they will give you misinformation about why (breakthrough medications make long-acting medication not work, which is wrong).

And just the way they said it, even though I know I've done nothing wrong and they told me I was fine, I still feel like a criminal and I'm dreading going back there.

I'm sorry to hear about your pain. It sounds absolutely horrific. I hope we can both find a better place to go to have our pain properly and compassionately managed so we can live our lives.

it was the clinic in morristown. a long way to drive but most clinics locally dont want to the very long term pain management im looking at.

its a catch 22 too young to get it fixed but no one wants to help me manage it till im old enough to have a replacement. its one of the only times in my life ive wished for a condition to get WORSE. because if it gets worse and the hip ball completly collapses, THEN ill get a replacement.

And thank you, its hard enough trying to deal with a medical condition like this and still be the father and husband I want to be, to get used to not being able to live the life ive always lived to have the majority of people act like im just in it for pills.
Id really rather not, they have their own side effects that are not good.

I am so sorry to hear about all of the above circumstances, yet I am so glad to have come across this topic b/c I, myself have considered this clinic in my search for help with my condition. I moved here from another state 2 years ago and have YET to find a doctor that doesn't just brush off my conditions and the ammount of daily pain I am living with. Even with 4 MRI's & Countless X-rays, Doctor's reports, and medical records I am still brushed off and looked down upon for seeking treatment. For the last year I have just sucked it up and lived with the pain... If u call it living, that is. The idea of seeing a doctor anymore brings on so much anxiety that I can't do it anymore. I am in the same shoes as the previous poster... Too young for any kind of surgery... and with my condition one surgery will just lead to multiple sugeries. With 2 kids in elementary school, I can't be "out of commission" like that... This state is not ideal for patient care... Not in the least!!! I pray something comes along and there is an answer to help all of us and everyother person who suffers from cronic & debilitating pain!!!

I simply don't understand why pain management places don't want to treat people for CHRONIC PAIN...isn't that what they're there for?

I completely understand what it's like to be young - let's just say I am not 61, nor was I born in 1961. It's frustrating that we're looked at negatively, and sometimes treated like criminals when we're not.

This state downright SUCKS for medical care - I've lived in quite a few states, and TN has the worst Medicaid system I've ever encountered.

I really hope something works out for all of us soon (even if it's that the ETBSC thing works itself out somehow - so many changes in that office, and now with being so seriously misinformed...I don't know how to feel) or going somewhere else (I really, REALLY don't want to have to travel to Knoxville...that's so far away!).

We shouldn't have to live like this or even worry about whether or not our pain will be managed (if you have pain, pain management should be a right, not a privilege).

Stay away. I don't know any of the other doctors there but meeting a Dr. Fullager was enough for me. I have never met such a rude person in my life. His bedside manner and attitude is rediculous. I don't know how he has any patients to take care of with his personality. I have met rabid dogs nicer than that a##hole.
