<quoted text>Wow! How do people manipulate the system really? I have heard this about Science Hill too. Counselors don't give information to all children about available scholarship. Most of the scholarships are quietly given to children whose parents work at the school. I hope it's not true.
There is no way to manipulate the system for UH. It's completely random how students get accepted. You don't pay or call in favors or anything like that. First priority goes to children of teachers, then siblings of students, then a lottery system. My parents applied for me to get in while I was still at Indian Trail Middle School and I didn't get in until randomly in 8th grade at Science Hill.

UH is not a wannabe prep school as everyone sees it to be. Its just a way to help out students being it is a smaller school. Yeah they say it is a math and science school but the other subjects are widely taught and they dont slack on teaching. The teachers do as much as they can to help the student right as they need the help. That is if the student is willing to ask for help. I never asked for help at science hill, and when i did the teachers wouldnt help me. But even though i dont always ask for help at UH they help out the students around me if they are struggling and most of the time when they are helping one student i understand the subject better than i did before. It is a great school to attend, it isnt full of preps. But it is a better environment for students

UH is a public school which limits class size and emphasizes college readiness.University School isn't perfect, but it is a good place. It has the advantages and limitations of a small school with limited funds. There are far fewer discipline, drug, and behavioral problems than the larger schools. One reason is that it requires parental involvement to apply and be selected. That alone eliminates some kids who have no support at home. Secondly, troublemakers can be removed, whereas a large city school is required to enroll everyone but the extreme cases.

US News & World Report ranked UH the #10 high school in the state. Science Hill was also very good at #13. To compare head-to-head is hard, but 91% of UH 9/10th graders passed the state proficiency in algebra. 77% of SH students passed. 95% of UH students were rated proficient in English, 73% of SH students met that level.

Science Hill is about 10-12 times the size of UH, but UH has more National Merit Finalists and has an alum Rhodes Scholar..

Seriously let your kid have the real high school experience. Let them go to one of the top academic and athletic schools in the state. They won't be able to be on that new football stadium or the new basketball gym if they go to UH. Don't be a stickler and trap your kid in a small wannabe prep school.

Which high school is academically better in Johnson City? I am in real dilemma right now. UH or Science Hill? My child got accepted for 9th grade for year 2013-2014. Please help me to make my decision. I would love to hear comments from recent parents from both high schools.
Science Hill. I've been to regional (multi-state) math bowls and seen the science Hill kids win overall, win best team and take 8 of the top 10 places. University School's students did not even place. SHHS's Dr. Mauldin is a genious math teacher. My son told me he was bored in his freshman calculus class at UT-Knoxville because Dr. Mauldin had covered the college material in Precal. Ive also been very impressed by the English and Science departments. dr. Griff in history is so good the students arrange their schedules to get in - he really makes history come alive. In addition, their music program is incredible. Every talks about the band, but their orchestra ranked 6th nationally last year. They are so good that Mark Wood of the Trans Siberian Orchestra played in a sold out concert with them last February. He enjoyed working with the group so much that he's coming back next year.
In terms of college prep, this years graduating seniors have a Jefferson scholar, Rhodes scholar, 7 national merit finalists and a total of 14 MILLION $$ in scholarships offered to them.
