I moved here recently from Dallas, Texas. I've driven all over the US. I've had commutes that took me through some of the largest cities in the States...Chicago, LA, Dallas, Atlanta, Charlotte, Tampa, Las Vegas, etc. Cities you would assume would offer terrible driving experiences. I have NEVER encountered worse drivers than I have here in the Tri Cities area. EVER. Don't get me wrong, I love it here, but as one who makes a commute from Roan Mountain to Johnson City every day, I'm getting quite sullen at the unbelievably inconsiderate drivers here. Things like:

1. THE LEFT LANE IS FOR PASSING. THE RIGHT LANE IS FOR SLOWER TRAFFIC. If you have someone on your ass in the left lane, MOVE OVER. It's simple!

2. STOP FLYING IN FORMATION!!! If you move over to the left lane to pass someone...FREAKING PASS THEM! Don't drive the same speed and block everyone else from passing on either side. PASS THEM.

3. If you take 19E from Roan Mtn to Hampton/Elizabethton/etc. Or back the other way, you'll know what I'm talking about. There are 2 opportunities to pass. You'll be driving down this 2 lane windy pass and suddenly you'll have a quick opportunity to pass. Undoubtedly, the asshat driving 30 mph in the areas you cannot pass will suddenly accelerate to 75 when you finally come to a passing area to prevent you from passing them...then when the passing lane ends, will slow back down to 30. You people are dicks.

4. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP TO TURN ONTO A SIDE STREET ON YOUR RIGHT. How many times, on Broad St/Elk Ave in Elizabethton have I been following someone driving 10 mph lower than the posted speed limit, come to essentially a complete stop in order to turn right into Walmart, or another side street. That is so unnecessary! YOUR CAR WON'T FLIP OVER, I PROMISE.

5. TURN SIGNALS. Pushing the turn signal lever up signals intent to turn right. Down signals intent to turn left. It's simple, and oh so helpful to everyone behind you.

6. This isn't a complaint about the drivers here, but why the heck are there so many dead animals on the roads here? Sheesh.

7. What's with you guys closing up a little white bag in your side window to further indicate your car, which is parked on the shoulder of a road, is inoperable? I think the abandoned car on the shoulder of the road is signal enough that there is a mechanical problem. No one else does that, ANYWHERE.

8. The obvious complaint is that you guys drive so slow. You think people have that problem on roads everywhere. No. I think this area takes the grand champion ribbon for slow drivers.

9. Is the middle turn lane a new thing around here? I am often amazed at how many people will still turn left from the driving lanes, instead of pulling into the middle turn lane. This must be a new phenomenon here in this area.

10. If you're on a side road, pulling onto a main road, how about a little consideration? Why don't you look not ONLY at the car that's immediately coming your way, but look to see if there are any cars behind them? In other words, STOP PULLING OUT IN FRONT OF ME CAUSING ME TO SLAM ON MY BRAKES! ESPECIALLY if I have no one else behind me!!

Sigh, I think 10 is enough. lol. I love you guys, but Lord have mercy...it's no wonder my insurance rates are so high!

Wow. You are right on! You said everything I wanted to say except one. When you get off the interstate to MERGE onto another road. Why do you stop? You not only decrease your chances of making the merge, but everyone else who is exiting the interstate has to slam on their brakes. Just keep it moving, put on a blinker, and merge over you MORON!!!

The worst is the exit onto N Roan of I 26. Though there is a lane that extends several hundred feet some drivers slam the breaks and wait for all lanes to clear rather than use it. You are right to wonder about their driving skills (or whether they're bright enough to come in out of the rain.) But keep it cool lifes too short to bust a gut over them.
My peeve is drivers who realize tpp late they are in the wrong lane to a turn. Rather than proceed a block and circle back they block their lane and wait till the lane they intend to cross clears.

I live off 19E near Hampton and have also traveled the world and you are right, these people are ignorant drivers. I suspect it's due to the overall lack of education and low IQ's in this area that result in their inability to properly operate a motor vehicle. I sometimes wish I was a cop here as I could write 100 tickets a day on the dumb stuff I see people do.

Oh, and my biggest pet peeve is lazy ass people pulling up next to stores (i.e.Walmart, grocery stores, etc) and parking because they're too damn lazy to find a spot like everyone else. And while I'm at it, people who park in handicapped spots because they have someone else's car with a handicapped placard but they have no handicap themselves. You're taking a parking spot an actual handicapped person needs you idiots!

Maybe you haven't learned the rules of the road here. For you flat landers who barrel through here acting like you are the only one on the road, keep in mind that if you ride someone's ass around here with no respect for a safe following distance and won't let up, they will do everything possible to make you miserable. I've seen your kind who don't really know how to drive on a mountain road and then wonder why they wind up losing it in a curve. Perhaps if you weren't speeding in the first place you might realize people pulling out in front of you could judge your speed better. Why don't you set your cruise control @120% of the speed limit, go west, and don't stop until you are back in Texas?

You all think it's bad there, come to Greene county..

Only place I've lived that they floor it for a red light, and I can't count how many times I've had to come to a complete stop at a green light...

The back roads here are banked backwards so when you come around a corner expect someone in your lane....

I've be rear ended 3 times sitting at a red light...

Never mind that they pull out in front of you when there's not a soul insight, but don't speed up cause they will turn right two turns away with no blinker...

So if you think you've got it bad come here and see it's not that bad.

You and people like you are the problem. If someone is riding your bumper there is a reason. You are doing something wrong. If you can't do the speed limit, pull over and let us by. I realize you have no job, friend, or family to go to. But the rest of us do. I think it's funny when you go to pass a slowpoke and they speed up. I have never seen such vindictive driving. Get a life and maybe you'll have something to live for too.

Absolutely perfect observation! I drive I-26 every day and I know if most of the drivers here ever drove anywhere else in the United States-they'd be dead-and probably cause countless other damages! i have driven all over the country and agree-this is as bad as I have ever seen! Is the solution more mandatory training-large snow plow type equipment to move out the slow pokes in the left lane-someone riding shotgun to zap off the cell phone yaking goofs-what? It is truly a miracle to arrive safely! I am somewhat comforted to know there are other drivers out there like me who dodge these idiots daily, too, like driving in a war zone!

That's not a rule "around here" that's stupidity! Everyone from here is NOT like you-we are as disgusted with people who clog the highways as much as people from Texas or anywhere else are who have to be on the road with the likes of YOU! Grow up, get a job, and then you'll have somewhere to go in a hurry, too!

I agree H24. This is the only place on the planet where it takes a driver an act of congress to simply drive the speed limit.

One other thing I have noticed that doesn't have to do with driving. Why do people around here turn their vehicles into traveling memorials to a deceased individual? I have seen numerous signs or decals in rear windows that start out by saying "In Loving Memory of ***." I am not knocking this phenomenon, but I have not seen this anywhere else.

Between the slow headed mopes and wannabe Nascar drivers here in the area, it's a mess. But if you really want to see some offensive driving, go to Knoxville. For some reason the natives there think the on ramp is their right of way and will merge about as respectfully as a rhinoceros. I don't know why so many people think their car is a cocoon that gives them the right to assume they own the road, but it sure is obvious. One thing I hate is the driver in my rear view mirror, both of us in the right lane doing the speed limit, who insists on driving up my tailpipe. Maybe they think they are drafting or something, but it tends to make me gradually slow down for spite. Remember when you first got your driver's license? It was stressed that driving is a privilege, not a right. I think people have forgotten that. As for the white grocery bag stuck in the window, I've been forced to do it, but I really don't know why! I guess when your car conks out on you, you just don't think right. And the traveling memorials, I don't get that either, but if it makes folks feel better I guess it's cool.

I agree with a lot of what you are saying, but if you are following too close, you're asking for half of it. If you are not following the car in front of you at a safe distance, you are basically forcing them to slow down as a defense against your bad driving.

If one car can't be seen behind another, it is again following too close.

I agree that this place has some of the worst drivers, but I have to say, it sounds to me like you may be one of them.

If someone is stopping in front of you to turn right, they are doing it bc you have been tailgating them & clearly losing your crap, & I'd guess the same if they aren't letting you pass. It's just fun to be an a-hole to tailgaters that won't chill.

If someone is flying up behind me but slows at a safe distance from my car, I know they are in a hurry but still courteous & I will get out of their way ASAP. If someone comes flying up & then rides my bumper, they are clearly just a crazy jerk, & while I'd like to pretend the only reason I'm slowing down is for safety, the fact is, it's just fun to mess with jerks.

The next time you are on someone's bumper, try backing off & driving safely & see if they don't let you pass.

Brake checks and cruise control beside a tractor trailer for about 10 miles usually cures a tail gaiter. I typically speed and I can't stand it when I'm doing 80-85 on a posted 65-70 mph, constantly passing traffic and somebody rides my ass. Im not going to change lanes 50 time just to satisfy your stupidity. Once a nice open spot appears in right lane, I will gladly move over and let you by. Riding my ass will only piss you off. I promise.
