There's nothing we can do about it because they know people wil pay the high bills because they know that people have to have power. It's a rip off but what can we as consumers really do?

Heres dome interesting facts. The jcpb has already installed fiber opticts on the New Boones Creek Rd. Fiber optics cost about 155,000 per mile to install. Something else I found interesting is the fact that everytime another company climbs a jcpb pole, whether it be Century Link, Comcast, etc. a $5.00 fee is paid to the jcpb. Oddly no one at the jcpb can tell me where the $5 is going. To understand the amount involved a friend at CL told me they climb about 700,000 poles a year. Times that by $5.00. Lots of little money tricks. Then we still lose.
Good research.....it proves the point that we are getting screwed, big time. With all this money being extorted, why don't we get a break? I mean, so what if Century Link, Comcast, and other parasitic businesses get taken, other than they pass the deficit on to us? Why do we have to lay a pound of flesh into the mix? Somebody is getting rich off it, and it sure ain't me!

im a mechanic and i dont make a huge amount of money and last month i had four people in my home and my power bill was around 180 i can see that but this month my wife and kids have went back to canada and im alone and now my power bill is almost 300 and i am at work every day 730 to 530 and only cook maybe three times a week and same for laundry and my thermostat is at 68 degrees i live in a single wide mobile home (95) and have only half my house open so i dont have to heat all of it how can my bill be higher i dont have a clue

but i do know if i ever get a power truck in my shop the price will triple before i ever touch it and im saying rising cost of shop supplies and this goes for all power company employees

i figure turn about is fair play we the working class take it on the chin every day from almost every walk of life shouldnt there be someone who isnt on the (payroll) in washington who can see thier way clear to help

ive wondered if we all ahouldnt have a great american walk out and all blue collar workers stop going to work for a couple days no gas no groceries no work maybe then we might mean more than a dollar sign to the super rich

anyway all hope the rest of the year is a little easier on us all

My electric bill went from $180 to over $500

The only appliances we use are our fridge, stove and central heat and air.
What can you do? Its not like they have to compete with anyone else.

It is amazing how the power board can lay it to you. No matter what, the early winter bills are always sky high. They have all the bases covered with one excuse or the other. I've heard everything from the sliding scale of "emergency power rates" to "estimations". Fact is they have the thing all wrapped up with no recourse for the consumer. But what can ya do?
Yes you are correct. The electricity company is way out of line charging these outrages prices. Our electricity has way over doubled these last two months and they can't blame it on our comsumption, because we Aren't even Using Heat! We have put plastic up on our windows and are sitting around fully clothed even with shoes, sheatshirts and jackets. This is a shameless act on the Johnson City Power Board. Just another way to _ the customers.

Just found out that the meter at my apartment has not been running fast enough or something, and am now being back-billed. Beware of this happening to you as well. I never received a letter or phone call, just a huge bill.

I think the peak hours are in the morning when all activities start, and right after 5:00, but I don't remember the exact times. The idea is to smooth out the peak, they are not telling you when to use power, but how to save money. Peak hours cost a lot more to produce the energy needed. That is not hard to imagine, picture your car, at 55 it gets its optimum mpg and at 100 the mpg reduces sharply. They will have different rates for different power usage periods.
if yall look around theres a dam bout every 20 miles apart dont even try and tell me falling water costs more when its cold than when its hot ,we are going to have to protest in mass numbers to get their attention, when we use less they raise the prices to make up for losses ,utilites need to be regulated like a non profit org

You know this power bill deal is the same thing that is wrong with our health care. Not enough control over overcharging and putting down any
number on your bill for KWs they decide they need to.

I realiize the Government doesn't do much for the people. But this is one of a few areas they need to control, Utilites and health care. They already control the utilities to an extent by placing caps on what they can charge. But the utilities have found loopholes around them buy just charging what they want to or estimating what they think you might have used.

Did you realize if the Fed and State did not cap water and power rates those bills would be just like out health care bills.

Instead of a three hundred dollar light bill it would be a 8 or 9 hundred dollar bill.

We need some serious control we pay the government big bucs why not make them work for it for a change?

just wondering

Yeah that sucks big time. I just read an article a few days ago in the JC press about them doing that which is complete BS. Their non chalant, arrogant attitude about it is unbelievable. I also noticed the first big jump I had in my bill was right after they installed the new meters. Some of them have shark fins on them. Somebody needs to get these meters tested to see if they are running too fast. They made a mistake supposely and put in those meters which were not reading fast enough. So what if these are reading too fast?

Yes! For a crazy moment, I thought I had accidentally received the heating bill for Freedom Hall! I've never had such a high heat bill.

I don't understand why our neighbors from the other cities in our area have not experienced the rate increases that customers of JCPB have. I believe if we can get enough of united, we can have JCPB investigated. The rate hikes are unreasonable and should be investigated. Maybe if they didn't have the big, new facility our power bills would be in line with other power companies in the area.

They needed that huge mauseleum about as much as Johnson City needed that white elephant of a new library. I wonder who got the bids on those? And who got kick backs? Oh, I forget that piece of sh*t worthless hotel across from the university with the million dollar reflecting pool that never worked. Or the bike trails that never has anybody on them.

I live in an apt building and when I got my bill I thought it was bad until I talked to my neighbor. Mine was 150 (usually 80) but somehow his was over 400. We even compared bills and I actually used more energy then he did! Now how does that work? We have the same size apts with the same amount of people living in them. The power board even left a "shut off" notice on his door. Are you kidding me...

Just an update on the continuing rip off from the JCPB- My last bill(Jan. which is only 31 days) was for 35 days, their excuse was because of the holidays. So you would expect a smaller bill for Feb. since it was only 28 days, but noooooo it's 32 days. Go figure how they squeezed out over an extra week of charges just out of two months alone. I call it Bullsh*t!

I am luckily a former customer and will NEVER live in their service area again. We lived in the area for two years in a rented home in which the children insisted the bill be left in the name of their deceased father. The employees were well aware of the situation. Two years into the lease during the month of Feb, business was slow, we got a cutoff, paid it and the next day while holding my 3 mth old, they turned off the electricity. They claimed it was over $16 that was not on the bill. They said if we had checked online, we would have known. We were forced to pay a deposit to get it back on. While we were standing there paying, a security guard stood by while we were informed they were not allowed to leave service In a deceased persons name and because we were new account holders, they needed ANOTHER $300 to put service in our name. To this day, no one can tell us where our disconnect, reconnect and deposit went that was paid in the name of the deceased. It isn't fair, people have no choice. They know they have you.

Most people aren't aware of where a utility is billed by generators, such as TVA. Utilities are billed at the substation where TVA has their metering installed. Another fact is that utilities have the capability to lower voltage at the substation, thereby allowing them to "ride" through the peak times. Lower voltage at the station means the utility pays less to TVA. TVA has also NOT made time-of-use metering mandatory either. At this time customers would have to volunteer to be on it.
