I'm not here to take up for any business but, I have found some fairly good prices at Mahoney's over the years. Of course I guess that can be said for Cabelas & Bass pro. I don't shop at either one due to no concrete & mortar store close by (yet). But I have seen some astronomical prices at Mahoneys. One thing that does piss me off about Mahoneys, just about every time I go in & look around, especially the gun dept., no one will ask to assist you. They just stand there and stare. I've never had that problem at other gun stores.
I too have found it somewhat frustrating not to get assistance when I need it there. But I still go there over buying off the internet because the reality is that every local business is supporting our community through taxes and jobs. I don't want to see a totally internet based commerce industry because that would simply mean higher property taxes and income taxes, not to mention the jobs that would be lost. Yes, sometimes I have to pay more, but in my opinion, it is worth it. This is a great community. I would like to see it stay that way.

Question for the economist:

If the local economy was 100% internet (at least for retail), would the money we save on purchases be more or less than the additional taxes we would have to pay to make up for what retail would no longer contribute?

Dan is right, it is not right that these places get these kind of breaks. If you or I started a buisness we would be on our own. Did they offer Dan a big tax break when he opened his store in Va.? Nooo. The taxpayers are the losers as they have to foot the bill for this. If these companies don't make a big enough profit margin they will be empty buildings. I have traveled llover the country and seen some of these empty stores.
Not a lot of difference between this and the folks who "TRY" to entice buisness here. Offer a phone answering center, tax`breaks utility discounts etc. They come in, bringi their own folks for the good paying jobs, hire part time employees , stay till the freebies end and long gone after that.
There is still enough old money left in town to prevent any good paying companies out so they don't have to pay competing wages.
