Robert: I definitely would have either gotten a good lawyer or looked into this further to find out if your family is particularly susceptible to staph infections because of some genetic reason.
It's a bit worrisome, but I also know quite a few people who have had good experiences with JCMC, including some open heart surgeries that went perfectly fine.
I'm still leaning toward JC Internal Med, unless someone can give me a really good reason not to.
Nothing genetic. One of them was an in law. Could have been a stroke of bad luck but due to the overwhelming stories (similar to mine)that I have heard over the years, I think there is something to it.

Thanks for your honest advice about JCMC ER. I think it depends somewhat on the day and time you're there, but that's crazy to have to wait that long anyway. The closest ER to where I live would be Sycamore Shoals.

The only experiences I have with the ER were where I called my doctor ahead and they met me there or I went in an ambulance, so I got immediate service. The only really negative experience I've had was with the ER in Abingdon. They left me alone in a room for 7 hours and treated me like a common drug addict when my gallbladder was in its final destruct sequence.

I am not interested in pulling anything over on anyone or getting drugs. I am interested in finding a doctor who would notice if I died and cares enough to keep that from happening.

I have heard the same thing about doctors who aren't originally from here - all of the good ones I've seen have been from other places. I am doing my research on that, believe me. I'm here because I'm trying to do as much research as I can before making a final decision.

Abingdon is definitely one to stay away from... In 1999 my mother went to Abingdon's ER 3 times in one week with chest pain. First time they sent her home w/ a diagnosis of bronchitis, 2 days later they sent her home with a diagnosis of an allergic reaction to the meds they had given her, the next day she was flown out of their facility by MedFlight to Kingsport after going Code Blue in JMH's ER because she had had a heart attack when she went to the ER the first time... She spent 12 days on life support. If it had not been for Indian Path, she wouldn't be here today. They just dismissed her and did no testing for heart issues all because she was only 41 at the time.

Unfortunately, my grandfather passed away in 2007 after contracting MRSA while @ JMH... That ER is a death sentence for sure!

Good Luck to you on ur search for a DR. I totally understand what u mean when u say u want a DR who'd notice if u died!!! I will tell u one to stay away from around here... Dr. Moran. Unless u want to be treated like an addict, talked down to, and have him complain about how much ur insurance does or does not pay...

I hadn't been considering Dr. Moran (I had to look him up because I didn't even know who he was). Good to know it's best not to look into him any further. I'm done being treated like garbage by any doctor. The little research I did found that he talks down to women, and I'm a woman who just doesn't need that.

I will never go back to the hospital in Abingdon, especially the ER. It was a terrible, humiliating, degrading experience. I've heard the same thing from quite a few people, including the managers of both apartment complexes I have lived in here.

Just Some Girl: That is terrifying! Thank God your mom is ok. I'm sorry to hear about your grandpa, though.

I've had two major surgeries at JCMC and had no problems related to either of them. Not that they are perfect, far from it, but compared to many of the area hospitals I think they are the best. If you are planning on going to Franklin Woods, keep in mind that they are a "stopgap" hospital, meaning they do not have the immediate resources JCMC does. For example, if you need blood transfusions, the blood has to be delivered from JCMC and many tests have to be performed there too. So you can figure in an ambuolance ride or two during your stay. If you are not in immediate distress, Franklin Woods may be ok. I can say the rooms are much nicer, but the staff are not quite as organized as they should be. Many of the doctors on call there are interns. One thing I do not like about the area doctors are the ones from India. I'm not trying to be racist at all, just my opinion, and the opinion of several doctors that the ones from India have a different aspect of treatment, more or less being not as aggressive in treatment and willing to give up on you.

Just wanted to add a little to the prior comments. I am sure JCMC has had some negative outcomes, but very hospital has some bad outcomes. Even the best of the best have some issues at times.
As for Franklin Woods, I think this hospital is very good at what it is there for. My experience has been good as far as there is usually significantly shorter wait times there than JCMC. They have been very capable with the issues my kids needed them for. With that being said, I know there are some more serious issues that they basically are not equipped for. So if you are having a stroke or something major, go on to JCMC. Hope this may be of benefit.

Well, it turns out that almost nobody is taking my insurance. I wound up talking to someone at the hospital (I called there by accident - so many of the numbers and addresses are so similar that I didn't know who I was talking to after a while) and she recommended the group that Dr. Nick Smith is with. She said she worked there for 20 years and that all the docs there are really good. I spoke with the receptionist there and she was very kind and helpful. I'll find out soon if this is going to be a good fit.

Thank you all for your input. I hope I've made a good choice.

If you choose a Doctor from Johnson City, dont let them EVER send you to the medical center. Maybe some have gotten lucky but i have had 5 relatives to die at the Medical Center. Cause of death was "internal infection" .We were not told just what that really meant until we point blank asked the Doctor "did they have staph"" .Each time, the answer was yes. I know, every hospital has staph but JCMC is OVERUN with it! Dont go in or get any open wounds while there and maybe you will be ok. I stick to Kingsport Doctors and hospitals. Franklin Woods might be ok, dont know much about it.
I had back surgery there a few years back, they didn't get all of the disk because the anesthesiologist screwed up and they had to hurry to keep me breathing. Oh, and after I got home my surgery wound wouldn't heal, and my local doctor swabbed it and it tested as staph. Not MRSA, but something very close to it. I fought it for 6 months, and finally had to go to an infectious disease specialist in KY to get it healed. I've had surgeries elsewhere without such complications.

On the other hand, my wife has had several surgeries there and they were as good an experience as surgery can be expected to be. Go figure.
