Also it is said all IA's & custodians in Carter county get paid for snow days....hmmmm. seems that something is a foot Washington County....call in the auditors. Someone better have some dang good answers and a proper paper trail. Been with Washington County for 9+ years and only been paid once for any snow days. That was when Rolland was in office
Hypothetical--If one is conducting corrupt business, why would he or she call in the auditors for advice on how to spend funds? The auditor is the authority that could bring down the proverbial house-why in this world if one is misusing money bring in the people that would find such a problem. Just Saying!

Why wouldn't you call them in? Seems like the Director of finance can't give a straight answer. The money has to go somewhere. She stated that they are paid 1/2 of the inclement weather days.....well where is the money? No one that I have spoken with ever been paid for 1/2 of those days. She also stated that it was, or has been policy that they get 1/2 of those days paid for the last decade. "Quote from the Johnson City Press Article" If you look on the WCDE web site for "policy's" there is no policy for that provision nor has there been in the "Past Decade". Did it, or does it go to Athletics?

Conservatives can be Union people too. I am glad he is trying to help those poor people though. But one thing about it those people who missed work because of snow don't have to work for the school system. They have the freedom to get another job that does not shut down when it snows. And it sounds like what a Union would ask for which is paying employees for work they didn't do not that I am against that at all.
Most of "those people" work in the school systems because they love kids! And if you haven't noticed, jobs are not so easy to come by these days. Also, the money is in the budget to pay these people so what's the problem????

That is a lie and you are clueless! Anyone that's ever spoken to David knows he would never use the phrase "don't bother me" . You are a good example of the stupidity and idiots on here

I know this...I just read the Herald and Tribune article and I must say that I support Hammond in his quest to get to the bottom of the finance problems in Washington County Schools. It looks and sounds like that Hammond will get to the bottom of this whole fiasco of not paying cafeteria employees when out for snow. Keep up the good work Hammond.

I would love to know where the money is at. It is said that the money is already budgeted, so what is the problem. I know the article in the press said that one person brought home a whopping $44.00. I also know that another person brought home a whopping $4.00 and was told the they would have to finish paying for their insurance on the next check. I would be ashamed to write a payroll check for $4.00. The quote from the finance director in the press said that for "The past Decade (that's 10 years) employees have gotten paid for 1/2 of the inclement weather days. The Herald & Courier gave another Quote from her and said: "For the past several years". Which is it? I know that I/A's had 90 hours for the month with 8 inclement weather days. If they work 7.5 hours per day then 7.5 x 4 (1/2) of the inclement weather days = 30 more hours. So 90+30=120. No pay for any of those days that anyone has gotten so far. Lie, Lie, Lie. Good LUCK to all !!!!

Hey board members I just read Herald and Tribune. Beverly Thomas and Ron Dykes lied in public to each of you. There has been no pay reimbursement for at least 6 years that I know of. Ask any IA unless some were paid and others were not. Ask any custodian and cafeteria worker not on salary. THAN ASK YOURSELVES WHY YOUR SUPERINTENDENT AND STAFF LIE. THANKS TO HERALD AND TRIBUNE READERS WILL KNOW WHO CANNOT BE TRUSTED.

If they are scandals where is the news getting them out to the public? Ye holder of thy scandal bring light for all to see. A claim based on speculation is not a scandal just because you say it is. You have to be more specific.
But the problem lay with the different sources of funding from which the employees are paid, District Finance Director Beverly Thomas told the board.

It’s been the system’s policy for more than a decade to pay instructional aides and custodians for half of the days missed for inclement weather, she said, and the district would not have trouble paying them, because their full pay was already budgeted.

But the food service budget only receives revenues from the sale of school lunches and federal reimbursements for free and reduced lunches, and fewer students have been buying school lunch of late, draining the budget’s money in reserves.

Thomas said a recent audit of the system’s finances showed the food service reserve fund was dangerously low, and it’s unclear if School Nutrition Supervisor Ann Thompson could afford to pay the 100 employees for the missed days.

“With the changes in the food service program that the president has made, the students just aren’t eating like they used to, so she’s not generating the funds that she once did,” Thomas said.“We’re going to talk with her, we’re going to talk to our auditors and get the feel of what they think we can do.” CAN YOU SAY LIAR OR IS THOMAS A LONG TIME FINANCE DIRECTOR JUST DOESNT KNOW?

Yea Buddy.....You sure do have that right. Conflicting quotes between the Johnson City Press and the Courier. The Director of Finance must have not went to school and learned how to hold a story together, or at least stay with one side and not two. It is really pitiful that you get a check for working and can't even buy your children a burger and fries from a fast food joint, oh yea I forgot the drink. How would they feel if their child or children wanted something to eat and all they could do is go home and get a PBJ for the next month. It's hard enough as it is, but we just cannot survive. Yea someone will say go out and get something better. Some workers have been around for 20+ years and the pay is well, less than adequate for their service. Yes there is always someone out their to replace them and that is how it is everywhere. People that have been there 5+ years are really dedicated people who love working with the children or they would not be there. A pyramid is broad at the bottom and narrow at the top, The broad section at the bottom represents the entire support staff that is the very foundation of our system, and should not be trampled on like we are the dirt of the system. Yes teachers hold a high respect, as they teach the children from reading to writing and everything in between. Just like the foundation of a pyramid, with out it the top would fall, as it cannot stand on it's own. Wish all the Support Staff in Washington County System Good Luck! You deserve Better

The majority of you people posting comments right now know none of these people on a personal level. They are good people who care about the workers and the children. You are taking cheap shots while setting behind the safety of your computer thinking you have something to gain by the stupid comments you post. If you think you can do better, file the paperwork and run for one of the open seats on the schoolboard. Otherwise, quit making things so personal and quit attacking people. There is nothing to gain from it! Go play in the snow! It will be better use of your energy.

The president did not make them serve crap food. The nutritional requirements changed, yes, but it's not his fault the school nutrition services can't come up with good healthy meals within those requirements. The kids aren't buying lunches because the food is undercooked or rotten, & not served within proper food safety temps & they make kids sick. Also, whoever is planning the meals is either really lacking in work ethic or just doesn't have the creative problem solving ability to do the job.

There has been at least one school that announced to the students to pay their cafeteria debt immediately. This has never ever been announced in the past. Why all of sudden is this an important issue? This only became an issue since this debate began. Interesting. Washington County bosses are vindictive and create extreme fear for the people who work in the schools.

Ok now here we go....We may not know some of these people on a personal level but working in the system is very close when you get torn down by them telling you that you won't get anywhere unless you know someone or you have a relative working higher up. When you have the certifications and 20+ years in the industry that my friend is what we call qualifications. But they will hire outside of the realm from fast food places instead of promoting from the ranks of the persons that do have the qualifications. You said that "the Majority of the people don't know these people on a personal level" ( Wouldn't want to know them outside of the work place) If they care about the workers then why would they make these comments to then?? I personally have had them made to me, and I venture to say that I am not the only one that has been told that. This post started out with facts of a two sided story that the Finance Director gave from quotes in TWO news papers. We just want the truth and to be fare.

Since the cafeteria is funded by federal dollars do the cafeteria workers get the $10.10 minimum wage instituted by Obama?

My children have been asking why the cafeteria wastes so much money since we moved to WCS. If kids can see it....

They love their lunch ladies. They should get paid on snow days. Or at least some of them.
