Who are the school board members that are pushing for athletics over safety of our children? I need to know. Will our commission let them get by with that? I need to know who not to support.

Sounds like another ploy by Mabe and friends like Larkey to put sports over safety. We know taxes will go up if they get their way. I have called the school board members and found out just a very few support this new facility.

Hammond is pressing state legislators and governors office on funding School safety and officers=higher taxes at some point. Taxpayers have had enough. Now money is wanted by commission to do a safety study. Get the police depts to do it.

I admire Hammond for wanting schools to be safe. I don't mind my tax dollars being spent to protect our children. I do mind the underhanded schemes from Larkey and Mabe to take money for SRO officers and spend it on their athletic pet projects. Taxpayers have had enough of the wasteful spending to benefit just a few ballplayers at Boone!

Why do we have to pay for another study? It is plain and simple that school personnel and students are sitting ducks. Some schools don't even have doors to lock their classrooms.

I think this is a question for Commissioner Mark Larkey. The JC Press quoted Larkey and Mayor Eldridge(business partners) as wanting this study. Where I fault Hammond is his push for officers in schools. All of these men should be more wise with tax dollars. I would like to know why Larkey and Mayor are pushing for million dollar athletic building when many are having financial hardships. I am now hearing my district commissioner Mark Ferguson is pushing this.

Who are they going to pay to do a study? More waste of tax dollars. There is always something fishy brewing when studies have to be done. Can't they go to the schools and study for themselves? Duh

How about cutting out the full time benefits, including DOUBLE retirement pay for the commissioners? Why should they get medical insurance, et. al to begin with? Use that money for our schools.

Is Larkey and Eldridge in business together? What are they up to anyway?

Try going to a school board meeting. You can find out all you need to know there. Funny how so many get on here and whine but when the first Thursday of the month comes there is only about 5 of us parents there!

Our county schools have to be funded and ,these days, protected! Thats the facts! Like it or not and the money has to come from somewhere! They tried passing the wheel tax some time back but NO WAY! said the clueless county! Raising taxes looks like our only choice at this point.

Well I do agree something should be done to add safeguards to schools these days. An armed guard does not guarantee safety though. Perhaps stronger doors and bullet proof glass might be a better solution. At least then kids and faculty could lock themselves in the classrooms or offices leaving a gunman to wonder empty halls until the police arrive. I'm not really sure to be honest, it's just a thought.

As for raising taxes goes, I don't have kids young enough to still be in school and I don't mind that some of the taxes I pay go towards education since I really don't want to live in a world full of idiots but... I'm not really hip on paying higher taxes or additional taxes to fund something I have no vested interest in or need for.

Now if you want to impose a kid tax and let those families that have kids in public school pay more taxes for their children's protection have at it. Or maybe let parents pay $10 a month to cover security at their child's school. That could equate to thousands of dollars a month and surely your precious little darlings safety is worth a piddly $10 a month. I mean why should it cost me more to keep a car (wheel tax) just so other peoples kids can have an armed security guard at school. I know that sounds kind of selfish and uncaring but it's not.
No more so than forcing motorcycle riders to wear helmets because of the higher medical costs that non riders might wind up paying for, or the additional tobacco taxes that smokers have to pay so the public doesn't have to absorb all the associated medical costs. Both of those groups have to pay extra or inconvenience themselves so the general public doesn't have to pick up the tab.

There are many things that can aid in minimizing the chances of a school shooting that don't cost anything. Things that parents can do like keep a better eye on their kids, what they do and who they associate with, watch for anti social behaviors or aggressive tendencies, keep firearms secured so kids can't get to them, etc. But it seems like all I hear is "the schools need to do this", "the state needs to do that" as if parents can be bothered with the inconvenience of taking more responsibility for their kids.
If my kids were still in school these days you can bet your bippy I'd be on them like a hawk making sure they were flying the straight and narrow, not waiting for someone else to do something. Think about it, nobody wants to be the parent of a child responsible for going on a killing spree at their school (I hope) so why not do all you can to make sure you're not.
