Has anyone heard if Antioch is still getting an Aldi? Last I heard it was going in the same parking lot as Ace? Thanks!

You must be German, mein herr. What is so great about Aldi? I heard you have to pay for your grocery cart when you go in. Sounds like they are an airline.

I wish it was true! Last I heard, it was just a rumor, but then again, I probably heard that on this board, which means that it could be true, it could be complete bull-pucky, it could be a subversive attempt to undermine the mayor, it could be a lie, it could be contingent upon sexual favors behind a dumpster, it could be .... pick your favorite ridiculous claim of motivation. Or just wait, someone else will come along and do it for you. And they'll use a silly name in the process.

Not all Aldi's stores make you put in a quarter for a cart, and if they do, you get it back when you return your cart (as opposed to using it to haul your groceries home). Their stuff has greatly increased in quality and I'd absolutely love it if I didn't have to drive to Round Lake to shop at one.

Do they make you bag your own groceries ?
I kinda remember back in the 70's there was a chain that tried that. Paying for carts and bagging your own are dumb ideas. I can't imagine some senior having to all that. I'll stick with Jewel Foods.
As for price breaks it seems i pay around the same for all my groceries no matter where i go.

perhaps you haven't noticed but Menards is trying this right now. They push your Chinese garbage to the end of the belt and stare at you like your speaking some forgien language when you ask them to bag the stuff up. For the record, the only reason I went there was for need of speed and they closed up the True Value.

I shop at Home Depot somestimes Lowes but neither is close enough. I've never like Menards. There stuff just never impressed me.
Yeah i hate the way places like that treat paying customers. Lets face it some 85 yr old shouldn't be treated that way. Bag up the stuff at least for the seniors.

I actually like some of the selections Aldi has and there is no doubt that my money is saved when I shop there. I'd still like to know if it's coming.

Yeah how badly can Antioch really need it ? With Jewel, PiggyWiggly, and Super Wal-Mart there's plenty of choices for groceries.

You put a quarter in the cart, use the cart then get your quarter back. That way they dont have to employee a cart fetcher , whick also helps keep dont food costs. You bag your grocers yourself too, which helps keep down costs. If you dont like it dont shop there. but for those of us who need to save money, its a great place to shop.

A little compitition close to home, close to expensive Jewel might do them some good; has anyone noticed how expensive they've become over the past month or so? I went in yesterday for the same items I purchased 2 weeks ago and the bills was almost nine dollars more. And no, they were not on sale before or after.

Jewel is about to price themselves out of business. I guess this wouldn't be so bad if I didn't mind going to the Pig. Small selection and I had trouble many times with prices not matching what's on the counter.

As a side note, notice how they're trying to push the 20 pack case of soda over the last several weeks. It looks like Coke is going to do away with the 24 pack case and is setting the table for this bad tasting meal-deal.

Never once have I had a problem with the scanners at the Pig. I agree, good meat dept, good deli, good selection, good prices. However, their produce isn't the freshest. None of our stores have a great produce selection, either it's too old or too expensive.

I'm no farmer brown but i do kinda remember there was a legit reason that produce was going to cost more this year.
The Pig is a good store. I'll take it over Jewel any day.

Ok, point taken. It's been a while since I shopped there for the above mentioned reasons. I did have trouble in the past with prices not matching what's on the counter. Maybe it's time to give the old PIG another try. I can't stomach eating food that was gouged out of my wallet at the Jewel and won't go into the walmart on principle.

The Pig it is then. Thanks for the replys, I wouldn't have thought about going back for a second shot.

Good news about you avoiding Wal Mart on principal. There is no room in the parking lot and your car would break the camels back. We understand Wal Mart is planning a 12 story parking garage to accommodate demand.

By the way, their groceries come from the same suppliers as the PW and Jewel, and they tend to be much less expensive. Not the same in other parts of the store of course. My biggest issue with WM is the produce and availability of stock. Don't even THINK of shopping there in the early evening. Many shelves are cleaned out. And weekend shopping? forgetaboutit. You can barely drive through the parking lot for the crowds.

I am for the little guy too and hope PW survives. A much different shopping experience there, and not the same feel at WM of being in a crowd going into Soldier Field for a Bears game.

One note of advice though, be sure you hang on to your shopping cart at the Pig... if you dont know the aisle and leave your cart for a second, your cart will "take off on you" due to the floors. Especially near the fruits and veggies. Its also entertaining when unsuspecting shoppers find this out!!! Support your local grocer!!
