Hey, I hope I don't get flamed for being a stranger and posting. I'm from California (definitely don't fit in there, politics-wise) but currently living in New Mexico, which sucks. I'm looking to relocate somewhere farther east, but don't know much about anywhere east of NM. I did go to Columbia, SC once and fell in love with it, although I was only there for a couple days and didn't get to see much cause I was there for my ex-husband's boot camp graduation.
What I'm looking for is somewhere where stuff grows, not too crowded (I know this forum is for Charleston, but maybe some of you know something about outlying areas), not TOO far from the coast because I miss the beach, and where I can find a job that pays enough for me to rent an apartment, etc. Do any of you have any suggestions?

p.s., I have no idea why Topix listed my location as Altenburg, MO. I've never heard of the place.

Anywhere in the Low Country is nice, for now anyway. South Carolina does not have as many fascist laws, but with influx of fascists from up north it is becoming a problem. They ruined their States with unions and government regulations so they move here to try the same damn thing.

After a little more research, I was torn between Columbia and Charleston, but definitely set on South Carolina. I figured a bigger city would be better because I'll be a stranger and there's more work in bigger cities. Columbia might be a little easier to find work.
Unionization, etc. worries me a bit, but SC CANNOT be anywhere in the league of SoCal yet.

Lol I like that Bill Smith. I'm from East Tennessee and I make a living off of the hospitality industry; Catering currently. I'm single and I don't have any children. I'm looking for some place nice to relocate to and I know that Charleston has a large up and coming restaurant scene. Would any natives recommend a relocation to Charleston?

I am pretty familiar with both Columbia and Charleston area. I livein the Charleston area but used to make delveries up in Columbia. I don't drink so maybe the night life is different for me than it is for others. I am not saying that COlumbia is a bad town. But if I lived in another state and new Columbia and Charleston like I do now. If I had a choice no doubt I would choose the Charleston area. Seems to be more to do. Close to the beach, downtown, historic, the plantations, slave market, aquariaum, patriots point, coliseum, performance arts. Columbia you do have USC, the zoo. There is more. But if I had the choice it would be Charleston. You said you like beaches. Columbia you would have a little distance.

Mine says Charleston now. But it has had me listed for another state as well as another local city as well in the past.

South Carolina is a backwards state as far as it's lawmakers go. To many "Good Old Boys" still around in government. Otherwise it's a decent place to live.

I'd think twice about such a move. I moved here from SoCal 4 years ago. It's nice for a week but after that it's dullsville. Jobs here suck. And I'm surrounded by a lot of ignorant people, like Bill.

South Carolina is one of the most beautiful states in America. However it is filled with the most reactionary, knuckle dragging, neo-con, bible thumping, self-rightous prigs known to man. The idea of paying a living wage to someone would have the cheap S.O.B.s scraming like stuck pigs and crying that the liberals are all out to take thier money, causing the US to become communist or some other ignorant rant. Educationally, SC thanks Mississippi every night in thier reactionary prayers, because otherwise this state would be 50th in all the good things and first in all the bad.

Not sure why you replied to me since I'm not relocating. What exactly is a "living wage" and who decides what that is?
