I'll take these on in separate posts. First of all, how dare you denigrate military service like that. NO ONE is dragging kids off the streets and making them enlist, we have a 100% voluntary military. For kids who have no idea what to do with their lives or who do not have the finances to go to college but know they want something more than they can achieve on their own, the military is a great way to be productive and learn some skills and either use those skills in a civilian job or use veterans loans to then go on to college. One of my kids was in a college class with a young man who did just that. It's actually quite impressive, given the probability today of getting sent to an active war zone , that the military has no problem in recruiting.<quoted text>
As to mandatory public service- We already have mandatory public service, but it's only mandatory for Americans from families without other options. It should be mandatory for All Americans. We wouldn't be wasting Trillions of dollars and thousands of our troops if the "elite"s children might be forced to risk being blown to bits in the sand of Iraq along with the poor kid from rural Georgia, or the Bronx.
I know kids from very comfortable families whose children wanted to serve their country in the military. Some are in the academies and some are enlisted - one family with one son who just graduated from an academy and another who just enlisted. So don't give me this hogwash about how only the poor with no other options are in the military. It's garbage.
