For those who still take the exaggerations of rebel propagandists as the truth of conditions in colonial America, Smithsonian historian Barbara Clark's book “The Freedoms We Lost: Consent and Resistance in Revolutionary America” is an eye-opening introduction to reality. She thoroughy contrasts and compares the rights the average American enjoyed under British rule to what they were subjected to under the Federalist regimes that followed.

Let us also recall that the American colonies were started as private commercial ventures. The myth of oppressed people seeking freedom in a new land is just that, a legend. Stock companies were put together in London to exploit the riches of the New World. Shares were sold to wealthy men who expected a substantial profit from their investment. The unfortunates who did the work, the “indentured servants” were their slaves in all but name. These private ventures were nationalized by the Crown in 1690 in the consolidation of power that followed the “Glorious Revolution” of 1688. To make this seizure more palatable to the English nobility who owned most of their stock, the colonies were granted exemptions from most ordinary taxes that other Englishmen paid. By the 1760s the colonies had become prosperous enough to pay their fair share. England had nearly gone bankrupt fighting the French and Indian War, which was largely about defending the American colonies’ borders from invasion.

Meanwhile an Anglo-American aristocracy which was anything but democratic in its beliefs or its actions came into being in the colonies. Unlike their counterparts in England, the American ruling elite had earned its wealth - largely through slavery and land speculation, by the way, not by actual labor - and were thus ineligible for membership in the traditional aristocracy of their mother country, which was based on a rigid, hereditary hierarchy.

I believe the historical record shows that it was this jealously and resentment of their inferior social status that created the agitation for a final break with England. Ordinary Americans - the ones the Federalists would later dismiss as “rabble,” having used them as fighters for independence - suffered little inconvenience under English rule. King George was after all appointed by “Divine right” to rule them, which he did with the consent of Europe’s only elected governing body, Parliament, and with strict observance of the Englishman’s inalienable civil liberties defined in the Magna Charta five centuries earlier.

Hypothetical: You are President, an airliner with Americans on board is shot down by a ground to air missle of soviet origin in eastern Ukraine, what do you do?

Answer: You are the "bagman" for the democratic party, you proceed to the Hamptons to pick up the cash in shopping bags from millionaires and billionaires who you will see on vacation in Marthas Vineyard anyway but the collection can't wait, there are "mouths to feed".
