For clarification purposes:
With regard to the person critcizing the Marine Corps re 1st Sgt. Hatfield, the Corps takes children of Marines very seriously. The court records were reviewed with regard to this child.

The Marine Corps, if a child is proven to be the child of a Marine, could move to have the child removed for neglect if the mother is still using drugs as the child becomes a Marine Corps "dependent" and thus under the aegis of the Marine Corps. Since 1st Sgt. Hatfield has no drug record (unlike the mother's self-stated admission of prolonged drug use), it is likely that the child would be placed with the father if proven to be his.

Since the woman in the second case declared under oath in court papers that 1st Sgt. Hatfield was not the father in her affidavit of paternity (claiming another man was), the Marine Corps would not press charges against her as no attempt was made to defraud the Marine Corps of benefits.

The FEDERAL government would press charges, however, if the mother deliberately lied in order to obtain benefits of another individual. The mother would have to repay the benefits received and if they totaled over $40,000 (which, according to records, they appear to have reached years ago), she could serve more than a year in prison on felony charges. If she received food stamps, welfare, public housing, etc. while falsely representing paternity, she might be (but probably would not be jailed, unless a threshold amount was reached) prosecuted by the Commonwealth as well.

It is doubtful, then, that 1st Sgt. Hatfield is the father of this second child, given the mother's own statements. Any implication that the Marine Corps would allow a Marine to willfully fail to support a biological child is false and misleading and does not reflect Marine Corps values.

Anyone still criticizing the Marine Corps should review Social Security and welfare law (governing federal monies paid to single mothers) as well as Uniform Code of Military Justice rules regarding children of Marines. Again, the final action is by the mother of the child: if she thinks 1st Sgt. Hatfield is the father, she would first have to admit to lying on her earlier sworn statements and accept the possible consequences of prison and losing her child.

Thank you.

Larry is very good at hiding, running, and anything else probably. He has seriously got to prove something to me, I thought maybe that woman of his might make him do something stand upish, but whewwww what was I thinking?????????? Its a sorry man that runs from something as wonderful and amazing as he did, she is a good woman Larry, you know that, I guess you thought because of that you could just drop and run. What a man that's all I am saying, what a man, at one time thought he was a good man, someone to be respected with his awards and all, but apparently the Marines didn't teach him how to be stand up!!! That's fine, everything that comes around goes around Mr. Larry:)
M'am or Sir: Please see the legal post clarification (21) if you are in touch with the child's mother. If she is willing to sign a federal affidavit admitting to lying in her first affidavit of paternity, and repay the monies given to her for the child, then and only then can a DNA test can be ordered to ascertain which man is the child's true father. If the mother is not willing to repay the benefits and possibly having the Marine Corps dependent (the child) given to the father, then perhaps you should advise her of this. The Marine Corps does not ignore dependents but it does ensure their well-being, and if the mother is in fact a drug user or former drug user or in an otherwise unstable condition (prior arrests, for example, or other children by various men, etc.), and the child is proven to be the biological father of a Marine, the child could be given to the father once the Marine Corps starts taking payments out of the Marine's pay.

Furthermore, if the Marine is 100 per cent combat-disabled, the child would share the Social Security paid for the other acknowledged children of the Marine and so the mother would not only have to repay other Social Security obtained under false pretense, but her child would have a greatly reduced monthly benefit since 1st Sgt. Hatifield has other children registered as dependents with the Marine Corps (through marriage).

Giving the father permanent custody would be the likely outcome and, if the mother is jailed for deliberate fraud, the father would almost certainly be given the child by default since he would be the next of kin and entitled to full custody. 1st Sgt. Hatfield would have precedence over grandparents or any other relatives if proven to be in fact the biological father.

This mother should probably be advised to see an attorney who can review UCMJ (military) law regarding these matters if she is now "sure" that she remembers who the father is and that she "forgot" when admitting to authorities that another man was the father of this child. The UCMJ does not look lightly upon false affidavits of paternity.

Again, the Marine Corps cares ONLY about the best welfare of the child and a mother who commits federal fraud to collect benefits, if in fact she did, and who has a drug history will not likely be deemed to have the best interests of the child at heart. 1st Sgt. Hatfield is married (his wife is also a Marine dep.); neither 1st Sgt. Hatfield or his wife have criminal or drug records. The mother would have a hard time proving that she is more fit than he is to raise this child. I hope, for the best interest of the child, that you will pass this on to the mother if you are a relative or friend. Thank you.

Was also stationed with this Marine in Florida and overseas and know him well. His grown children are all college graduates and happy. Seeing his wife with the stepdaughter from KY she is helping to raise, no one would guess from their mutual affection that this is not her biological daughter.

I suggest that the mother of the 2nd child who claimed another man was the child's father in order to receive benefits, but now seems to be posting that 1st Sgt. Hatfield is the father, take the advice of the person who posted Marine Corps regulations. It appears that this mother is unaware that she would in fact have to repay all the benefits if she obtained them by falsely claiming another man was the father before she could obtain a DNA to see if 1st Sgt. Hatfield is the father. Also, as the other person stated, the Marine father would probably have more rights to take permanent custody of this child given his background compared with the mother's. The Marine Corps takes such allegations very seriously. This is a legal, Marine Corps, and family matter affecting the welfare of a child. Federal law also takes precedence over any county or state laws.

Yes, Larry finally has his little girl, as a Virginia judge granted permanent custody to Larry and his wife. The mother was arrested for a drug violation in Virginia and was charged also with abuse and neglect. The original posting was to try to locate both mother and child but the child is safe now. Our prayers to all involved - including hoping the mother gets some help with her addiction. Thank you to everyone who contacted law enforcement and family members privately to try to locate the little girl. We are told that she appears to be very happy and secure in her new home and school.

Let me say this, I served under Gunny in the 80's.
This man is a stand up guy. A national hero, and a heart bigger than anyone I know. Why disaparage a man for the accusations made by a government check seeker. This man has faced more trials by fire than anyone can imagine. For you Gunny. Semper Fi.
