This was my first time, what an experience. Around the 14.5 mark I was losing steam, thought I was going to walk the rest of the way. An older gentleman came along side thinking I could encourage him to finish but the opposite was true. He kept talking, I think trying to distract me from by weakness, and kept saying "you can do it, you have worked to hard to stop now". I am so grateful to him-he was my angel!

I was interviewed the morning of the race by TV 13 news and would like to use this as a chance to give a follow up of my experience as a 1st time race participant.
As was stated in the TV interview I had previouly been a Riverbank Run spectator for 12 years. Cheering on others who were accomplishing something I thought I never could since I could barely walk weighing 330 pounds. Since that time I have lost 141 pounds, and to many people's surprise, I decided to take up the challenge and registered in February for the 30th Annual 5/3rd Riverbank 5K Run.
Not only did I succeed in completing the 5K, I had the best time of my life and set a personal best running time. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever believe I would be running races. "RUN" was not a part of my vocabulary.
After I finished the 5K race I took up my usual post at the 14 mile marker on Lake MI Drive to cheer on the 25K competitors (My Hero's).
I am so energized from this experience that I am continuing my training to better my time and to repeat the Riverbank Run again next year.
I have learned so much from this experience, mostly that through my own actions I have been able to encourage many others to continue with their fitness goals, even when their mind is telling them they can't.
This has been a real winning experience all around!
Congratulations to all who participated and a Huge Thank You to all the people who worked to make this event possible!
