RAPIDS -- Rick and Brenda Beerhorst may live in the heart of the city, but they want their six children to know where their food comes from.

That's why they are willing to fight to keep the five hens that cluck, scratch and may someday lay eggs in the little coop attached to the back of their Eastown home.

"We decided we want to connect with animals beyond just being pets," Rick Beerhorst says. "They seem like a good urban lifestyle option to begin with."

The Beerhorsts, who are home-schooling their children, plan to protest an Oct. 13 housing violation notice that orders them to get rid of their chickens by Nov. 1.

They also hope to rally support for their cause, noting at least two dozen progressive cities -- including Traverse City and Ann Arbor -- have adopted ordinances that allow urban dwellers to keep small flocks of laying hens. East Grand Rapids also has issued permits for chicken keeping.

So far, Brenda Beerhorst has created a Facebook page dedicated to the issue. Their 15-year-old daughter has posted a YouTube video celebrating the family's bond to their brood.

What's the big deal. I think chickens are a lot less offensive than a house full of cats or some of the other crazy pets people have and they serve a useful purpose as well. Now if they were roosters making a ton of noise that would be a different story.

If they're kept in pens, who are they hurting? Good grief, people need to mind their own business!

I suppose if the people can control the noise so that its not in violation of any noise ordinance then I don't know why they wouldn't be issued a permit as the article states has been done before; If permits have been issued before but not in this case, I'd like to hear the reasoning behind that before forming an opinion one way or the other

I would just flip the bird at anyone who tries to tell me what to do on my land!

And shoot dead any government "authority" who would take my property RIGHTS away from me!

If a government servant attempts to starve someone to death...

Self Defense is a RIGHT!

There are also laws on the books to deal with people who steal chickens. A government employee who tries to consficate chickens from their owner IS stealing them.

BTW....people who rent have no property rights and shouldn't be able to tell a property owner they cannot have chickens!

Good Day,

As long as they control the noise and don't get a rooster, I don't have a problem with it... Actually I have a friend that raises birds for their feathers (fly tying), but then again he lives in a rural area near Lowell. Pheasants, peacocks, giuinea fowl, rare geese and so on. I hope I can get some birds for the oven! ;-) Those are all tasty breeds in fact.

dude, wheel chocks don't work for chickens...they just jump right over them...

but seriously, eventually, there will be a rule, or law, or guideline for every funking thing we do day to day...need to brush your teeth? make sure you use approved toothpaste and exactly 7.2 psi, never making a figure-8 pattern unless you have a FET permit....

Here's another way to teach kids were chickens from.

Chickens come from eggs.

Eggs come from chickens.

I wonder are they going to have a block of wood for chopping off heads in the back yard, or just hang them from a string and use a big pair of scissors to cut off the heads.

This is a stupid ides chickens are dirty birds like all birds. You start keeping 6 or 10 of them around and they start to stink the coop stinks and the next thing you know you got mice and rats living in the coop eating chicken feed.

Leave the chickens where they belong on the farm.

This is coming of course from the same group that made Bob Israels take down the Art Prize fence on the west side. I drove by yesterday and had a very nice view of construction equipment through a cyclone fence, thanks Sue Shultz and GR, that was a big improvement.

I would much rather my neighbor had chickens than pit bulls. A rooser is a big problem though and a neighborhood full of them would be worse than a pack of barking dogs. The problem of course is where you drawn the line, horses ok, how about cows.

What concerns me is that the same folks that made Isreals take the Art Prize fence down because it was a couple of feet too high after 40 years so we had a better view of construction equipment, will also be deciding where the line is.

it should be legal to keep chickens in town IF people clean up after them and keep them on their own property.

it should be illegal to CARELESSLY keep chickens in town.

There's the rub most people are responsible, but a lot are not and some like to take it to the edge, there has to a limit and I think two chickens is enough. Of course people are not keeping them as pets, I figure they are going to eat the eggs and eventually kill them (chickens) to eat so you would need ten or more to keep rotating your stock. Sounds like a lot of work for very little pay off, I cant see it as a way to save money. And you still have to take them to the vet.

If you're feeling brave enough, you should get out all your receipts`, and then tot up how much you've spent this month. Or don't you have the courage to do so? It will be far better to know the truth than to pretend that everything's all right. But don't let it spoil what promises to be a delightfully enjoyable and rather emotional day.
