Analysis: La. Lawmaker targets speed traps

Apr 29, 2008 Full story: WWL-AM New Orleans 52

“If we're trying to attract commerce to Louisiana, and tie our state together, the north with the south, then we don't want to be stopping people at every town, handing out speeding tickets”

Every part of Louisiana has its notorious speed-trap town. Baskin, Golden Meadow, Livonia, Georgetown and other burgs have the reputation, at least, of handing out speeding tickets purely to make money. via WWL-AM New Orleans

One of those towns, Woodworth, raised the speed limit through town to 55. They issued more citations annually since they raised the speed limit. You're right, just obey the posted speed limit and there won't be a problem.

I bet there were more wrecks since they raised the speed limit up to 55. Here it is small towns trying to turn their towns in to interstates. It just can't happen.

Well, Woodworth tried to extend its city limits to include part of I-49. They failed. I have a problem that they are able to patrol a road that runs through a national forest. But, not to be outdone, the state forestry department has begun issuing berry picking licenses. That's right, if you want to pick black berries in a wildlife management area in La, you must purchase a berry picking license for $10. If you are caught picking berries without a license, it is a $50 fine.

Hey Georgetown. Visited your lovely city this weekend, coming home from a funeral. I looked up, saw a 45 mph sign, and 10 feet beyond it, a Georgetown cop. He must have been every bit of 19. His car was nicer than any police car in Houston. I wonder where all of that money comes from. He clocked me at 57. WOW!!! What a speed demon I am. You little red neck backwoods jerks. Get a real job, and get a real town.

Now on the other Hand the Officer in which you speak of is one however so you are welcome to say so Just as Long as you please keep it Directed at Him and not All of us who Live here!!! Yes we in this town have a huge Problem with our weekend Officers ecspecially the one you are refering to. He is a "Hot Head" and the only reason we have that New Dodge Charger Car is because one of our Former Weekend "Hot Heads" Flipped the Crown Vic Doing a "High Speed Chase" around a curve on Hwy 500. I saw it when it happened the car was not Speeding if so it was maybe 5-8 miles over max, the Stupid axx cop waits till the car is almost out of site so he can Speed after it. It had rained a few hours earlier, road still wet in Patches He speeds around a Sharp Curve, flies off the road going about 60-65 in a 45 runs hits a fence breaking it and flipping the car on its side then it falls back down totaling it. And the sad thing about it it wasnt the 1st time that the idiot wrecked the cop car on one of his "High speed Chases". So out with the Old car and "Hot Headed" Jerk I mean "officer" and In With the car and new "Hot Headed" Jerk (oops! again I meant officer.) Other that the political aspects and Gossip of this town. Its not so Bad, it is small everyone knows everyone (which can be both Bad and Good)and it is quiet safe for raising your kids as far as crimes and stuff like that.

Hey pissed on Texan and the representive of the "The Village of Georgetown",thank you for "giving to the walking track/park,we sure enjoy the monetary gifts from you.If you got a bitch, drive through the outskirts of Washington,LA on I-49 just north of I-10 about 20 or so miles, they have LACE officers shooting radar on the interstate,on the otherside of an overpass, on a stretch of about 3/4 of a mile of incorperated city limits. This is a 70mph speed limit max roadway,in G'town there is road construction going on and you should be driving slower than normal, because there is somebody's Daddy,Mommy, sister, son, aunt,un cle, wife, husband, and friends out there working on that project.Would you like to cause a funeral? Okay the official voice of Georgetown, what's your problem? Is it your outlaw underage drinking dope using sons or daughters? Do you think you or yours are above the laws? What do you expect from the officer that totaled the patrol car out due to no driver training, police training, people skills.Hell this ain't Mayberry,USA.I don't live in Georgetown, but I have the respect of the local citizens to obey the speed limits,to insure their and my safety.Thats all I have to say.

I'm sure Pissed Texan wouldn't appreciate anyone racing thru HIS towns ("Don't Mess With Texas!" pfft) but let me tell ya ... as someone who's driven this country from corner to corner, end to end, Texas has MORE than its share of backwoods redneck-y areas. At least in Louisiana, if you find yourself in a po-dunky town, you'll also find yourself being treated like if you wanna stay awhile, you're welcome to. There aren't many places like that left.

Actually, Mr Village Of Georgetown, They have that dodge charger because of a grant they got a little over a year ago...I remember reading it in the minutes in the chronicle. And you're right, that police department does do good. You said yourself "it is quiet safe for raising your kids as far as crimes and stuff like that." So obviously those cops are doing they're job. When was the last time there was an accident in front of the chevron at the intersetion? Maybe because people know to slow down through there?

Livonia, LA and Port Barre, LA are speed traps in Louisiana on Hwy 190.
When you travel in these towns, SLOW DOWN to speed limit or below...
don't buy gas in these small speed trap towns, don't visit McDonald's!
Don't patronize the businesses in these speed trap towns!
WHY

WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF A SPEED TRAP? EXPLAIN TO US ALL IN THE BEST WAY THAT YOU CAN EXACTLY WHY YOU CHOOSE TO LABEL THESE TOWNS AS A "SPEED TRAP" .
heres why

Maringouin, LA

#13 Sep 2, 2009
a speed trap is designed to piss off someone by making them pay a fine and losing their hard earned money. it suppose to teach people a lesson about not speeding.
that doesn't happen though, cause people are going to speed anyways. it's not a matter of making people "slow their ass down", but more like "how much revenue can the town make."
Cops speed and do the same shit on and off duty, so what difference does it make? beat the system, know where they are, and dont speed. simple.
WHY

Baton Rouge, LA

#14 Sep 3, 2009
SO I ASK AGAIN. WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF A SPEED TRAP? HOW IS IT A TRAP OF A SORT? THE ENTIRE U.S. 190 FROM WEST BATON ROUGE PARISH TO ST. LANDRY PARISH IS 55 MPH. THERE ARE FOUR 55 MPH SIGNS FROM ERWINVILLE TO LIVONIA. A 55 MPH SIGN AS SOON AS YOU ENTER THE CORP CITY LIMITS OF LIVONIA. THEN A 45 MPH SPEED LIMIT SIGN JUST AFTER SOPRANOS THEN A SECOND 45 MPH SIGN JUST AFTER THE RED LIGHTS THEN ANOTHER 45 MPH SIGN AT THE SHELL STATION THEN A 55 MPH SIGN JUST BEFORE G&A WRECKER WHERE THE SPEED LIMIT IS 55 MPH THROUGH THE REST OF TOWN ALL THE WAY TO ST. LANDRY PARISH. COMING FROM ST. LANDRY PARISH AS SOON AS YOU GET OFF OF THE ST. LANRY PARISH BRIDGE THERE IS A 55 MPH SIGN THEN THERE ARE 5 MORE 55 MPH SIGNS BEFORE YOU GET TO THE CITY LIMITS OF LIVONIA THEN A 55 MPH SIGN WHEN YOU ENTER INTO LIVONIA THE A BIG SIGN THAT SAYS SPEED ZONE AHEAD THEN THE A 45 MPH SIGN NEAR THE SHELL. THEN ANOTHER 45 MPH SIGN BEFOR THE LIGHTS THEN ANOTHER 45 MPH SIGN AFTER THE LIGHTS THEN JUST BEFORE SOPRANOS A 55 MPH SIGN THEN JUST AT THE CHEVRON ANOTHER 55 MPH SIGN ALL THE WAY OUT OF TOWN. SO SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME HOW THE TOWN OF LIVONIA IS LABELED A SPEED "TRAP" ???
heres why again

last i checked, 55 is a little slow for me. especially on 190. i keep it past 70. but ya see, and yes, a lot of other people drive fast, or even faster than that.
heres where the "trap" comes in. a cop is "hidden" on side the road somewheres with the radar machine pointing at traffic. you cant see him for a long distance, or know the laser is pointing at you unless you got a detector.
and when you get to him, and he flips on the radar, and it says 66 or higher, you're screwed! its sneaky! like coming off the bridge in krotz springs, you dont know whats on the other side till you get over, and if your going 50 something or higher, prepare to cough up some dollars.
there, do you need someone to paint you a picture?

WELL FIRST OF ALL I WILL EXPLAIN TO YOU WHY THE SPEED LIMIT ON U.S. 190 IS 55 MPH AND LOWER. DONT YOU THING THERE IS A REAS0N THAT IT IS ONLY IN P.C. PARISH THAT THE SPEED LIMIT IS NO HIGHER THAN 55 MPH. IN CASE YOU HAVE NOT NOTICED P.C. PARISH IS THE ONLY STRETCH OF U.S. 190 THAT DOES NOT HAVE TURNING LANES. ST. LANDRY PARISH AND W.B.R ALL HAVE TURNING LANES AND NOT A GUARD RAIL. WHICH IS WHY THEY HAVE SPEED LIMITS UPWARDS OF 65 MPH. HAVE YOU EVER SEEN WHAT IT IS LIKE WHEN SOMEONE HITS ANOTHER IN THE BACK AT 55 MPH. MUCH LESS AT 70 MPH. IT IS A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH. THE SPEED LIMIT IS SET FOR THE SAFETY OF THE PUBLIC.SO IF YOU WISH TO BREAK IT AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT AT A HIGH SPEED THEN YOU WILL HAVE TO FACE THE LAW AND THE VICTIMS FAMILY WHEN YOU KILL THEM AND YOU WILL DESERVED IT ALL . IF YOU DO NOT CAUSE AN ACCIDENT WITH YOUR HEAVY FOOT AND YOU JUST GET A SIMPLE SPEEDING TICKET THEN OF COURSE YOU SHOULD HAVE NO PROBLEM PAYING IT. PAINT THAT PICTURE.

NOW AS FAR AS THE "SPEED TRAP" GOES. YOU SAY THAT THE OFFICER IS OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHERE YOU CANT SEE HIM AND WHEN YOU GET TO WHERE YOU CAN SEE HIM IT IS TOO LATE IF YOU ARE SPEEDING. SO LET ME GET THIS STRAIT. SHOULD THERE BE A GIANT BLINKING SIGN WHEN YOU COME INTO LIVONIA SAYING "WARNING!!! COPS RUNNING RADAR" WHEN THERE IS A POLICE OFFICER RUNNING RADAR ? ARE YOU SAYING THAT ALL OFFICERS SHOULD BE ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD COMPLETELY VISIBLE TO THE PUBLIC? TELL MY WHY AN OFFICER SHOULD BE VISIBLE ALL THE TIME WHEN RUNNING RADAR. ARE THE OFFICERS SUPPOSED TO GIVE YOU A FIGHTING CHANCE TO BREAK THE LAW? OF COURSE IF YOU NEW THAT THERE WAS A COP AROUND EVERY CORNER THEN YOU WOULD NEVER SPEED. THAT IS THE ONLY WAY TO CATCH THE ONES WHO SPEED AND ENDANGER US EVERY DAY. ARE THE POLICE SUPPOSED TO HANG A BLINKING SIGN ON THE STREET CORNERS FOR THE DRUG DEALERS SAYING " WARNING!!!! POLICE LOOKING FOR DRUG DEALERS"!!!!! WHEN THEY ARE UNDERCOVER TRYING TO CATCH A DRUG DEALER. ARE THE POLICE SUPPOSED POST SIGNS UP WHEN ENFORCING THE LAWS SO THE LAW BREAKERS WILL NO AHEAD OF TIME. FORTUNATLY CITIZENS TO HAVE WARNING SIGNS TELLING YOU NOT TO SPEED.YOU REALIZE THAT 96% OF THE TOWN OF LIVONIA'S SPEEDING TICKETS WRITTEN ARE 15 MPH OVER THE SPEED LIMIT.THAT IS AT LEAST 70 MPH IN A 55 MPH ZONE. 47% OF THAT 96% ARE 25 MPH OVER THE SPEED LIMIT THAT IS 80 MPH IN A 55. ONLY 4% OF THE SPEEDING TICKETS WRITTEN ARE BETWEEN 11 MPH AND 14 MPH OVER THE LIMIT. ARE YOU AWARE THAT BEFORE THE CURRENT CHIEF OF LIVONIA BEGAN THE STRICT ENFORCEMENT OF U.S. 190 THROUGH LIVONIA THERE WAS AN AVERAGE OF 3 FATAL ACCIDENTS A YEAR AT THE RED LIGHTS AND GAPS IN THE GUARD RAILS IN LIVONIA? NOW THERE HAS NOT A FATALITY IN THE CITY LIMITS OF LIVONIA AND THE TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS IN LIVONIA HAVE DROPPED 76% IN THE LAST 9 YEARS SINCE THE STRICT ENFORCEMENT BEGAN. IT SOUNDS LIKE SOME GOOD THINGS ARE COMING OF THIS "SPEED TRAP". IT IS APPEARENT THAT YOU ALL WHO LABEL A TOWN DESCRIBED ABOVE AS A SPEED TRAP HAVE NO CONSIDERATION FOR OTHER HUMAN BEINGS AND YOU SHOULD BE DEPRIVED OF YOUR PREVILEGE TO DRIVE UNTIL YOU GROW UP AND EARN THAT PREVILEGE.YOU ARE NOT SPECIAL NOR ARE YOU ABOVE THE LAW AND YOU WILL OBEY THE LAW JUST AS OTHER LAW ABIDDING CITIZENS ARE DOING ON A DAILY BASIS. IF YOU WANT TO SPEED AND ENDANGER PEOPLE ON A DAILY BASIS THEN DO US ALL A FAVOR AND MOVE SOMEWHERE ELES.
just asking

Does anyone know why there are turn lanes in WBR parish and St. Landry parish but none in Pointe Coupee? I'm sure it's a money thing but i was just wondering.
heres why again

Maringouin, LA

#19 Sep 8, 2009
well that was a waste of time. at least you were smart enough to say they should have a sign letting you know cops run radar. that is a good idea. lets incorporate it. I'll even patent it. hey, they do it for red lights ("photo enforced") why not speeding. you sooo smart! Livonia is full of smart bright people.

and ya know my definition of speeding aint doing 85 on 190 or 70 through livonia. more like 75 and 60. and the limits are 55 and 45.

but, go ahead. make a big deal about it, and try to make me and everyone else feel bad and guilty. we should be shamed.

and yea, its probly a money thing. and a lazy thing too.

The Speed Iimit is posted in Livonia,. If you are hauling ass,(in the fast lane) and I or somebody is in that lane also, stopped & waiting to make a left turn. There is another jackass in front of you speeding also, he sees me in time to get over. You are hauling ass, but can't get over (due to the slow lane full of cars doing the speed limit ). You then hit me or somebody! I am now dead. How do you feel about that jackass?
