Full story: The Santa Fe New Mexican

Right now is one of my favorite times to watch the birds. In fact, October is my favorite month to do just about anything.

I love this time of year for the surprise visitors to our yard. We see the green towhee (and have had one spend every winter over the past few years). Also a couple of curve-billed thrashers move in. We've had flickers bathe in our small pond and waterfall. But the real treats are the little warblers flitting around our blazing yellow chamisa: we've had yellow rumps, Townsend's (looks like a tiger w/ yellow and black head), and yesterday a black-throated gray, who was so tame, he flew to a twig only 3 feet away from me, so I got a great view. Other fall guests include a roadrunner, white crowned sparrows, and a rock wren (who we call "little gray bobbing birdie").

This is also the time of year when robins show up on our land to spend the winter. You can tell they're around by their copious rusty red poop (they're not called turdus migratorius for nothing!)

Daily Horoscope for December 31

Libra

If you live with other people you have to resign yourself to the fact that you all want to do different things today. The more you urge togetherness, the more everyone will be determined under tonight's Full Moon to do their own thing even if it creates problems. Try to play this down as much as possible because it's also a lunar eclipse and getting angry won't solve anything; it may even make the situation worse. Maybe this is a chance for you to do what you want for a change, too? Anyway, enjoy yourself tonight, Libra because you deserve it!
