I attended Mt Ash a few years ago. I had recently been saved, and was looking for a church to call home, so I tried it out. For awhile, it was o.k. Most of the time, Billy Carpenter would stick close to the bible. Everybody seemed to be nice, but I noticed that there was very few youth that attended this church, and there was NO events geared toward teens. So anyway, I was sitting in church service one Sunday, and noticed that a teen boy had walked in and set in the very back row. This boy was wearing all black, had some piercings, and very long hair. It was obvious that he didn’t have any family there, and he was very uncomfortable to say the least. But ya know what…Jesus had led this boy here for a reason, and gave him enough strength to walk in the doors. In this case, we should make some one feel welcome and talk to them about Jesus, as the bible tells us to not discriminate. This boy’s cloths or hair has NOTHING to do with his faith. But what happens? Billy Carpenter starts preaching on long hair and piercings!! These ‘’wild kids’’ that do drugs and wear black cloths!!! This FLOORED me. Here’s a kid that has made an effort to come to church, and you just pushed him right back out the door. He’s thinking ‘’yea, those Christians didn’t even know me and tried to judge me’’…Would Jesus want us to do that? Does the bible tell us to treat people this way??
Another example…….( THE REASON I NEVER ATTENDED THIS CHURCH AGAIN )

I was at Mt Ash on a Wednesday night and Billy started preaching on this, saying ‘’I don’t believe in this rock Christian garbage, I believe in the old music..thats real Christian music.’’ Mr. Carpenter, I hate to say this, but that is a really bad belief you have, and you shouldn’t be preaching opinion to your congregation. I have been to youth rallies and witnessed hundreds of kids get saved while listening to Metal Christian bands. When is the last time you saw that many kids give their lives to Christ at a southern gospel show? Do you think God would say that? I cant hear the Lord say ‘’You can have the singing Cupps play at my church, but not those kids from Lafollette, cause they play Emo music, and that genre is not allowed’’ Nope, I think the lord could care less about that. I think as long as you praise him from the heart, that’s what counts. Speaking of the Cupps, they actually made a group take their equipment down at a church and didn’t let them play cause they was Rock….That’s Sad, people. And guess what? The city of Jellico did the same thing a few years ago. A group called Holy Joe from KY booked a slot at one of the summer show. They were a true Christian band. When they booked the gig, that’s what they told them. That they were a Christian band…So, when they showed up with long hair and ready to rock for Jesus, they wouldn’t let them play, and was very rude about it. They told them they couldn’t play, as they wouldn’t ‘’the kind of folks people would want to see playing Christian music’’….Again, I ask…..What would Jesus say about that?
You see, these things push the lost further away from us. These things are not listed in the Bible, but they are practiced in this area every day, including Sundays. Our job as Christians is to lead others to Christ, and make people feel welcome. I’m not trying to put anyone down, but rather open some eyes

first of all im not wanting to judge here and that isnt my intention at all,but as far as worshiping Jesus Christ its gotta come from your heart. its not the clothes you wear,so many are looked down on for what you wear to church.and i think that keeps a lot from going to church, then again you arent suppose to let others be a stumbling block.my daughter goes to a church which has a christian band, it isnt like the old timey southern christian music i was raised on,and she also was taken to church where there was the old gospel songs as most would call em,but what i am saying is she goes to church she worships and she takes her children to church, again im not judging anyone but ive gotta say this,if you are a true child of God and you truly are saved it will show in your everyday life even the glow in your face cannot be hidden,we are suppose to be Christ like and worship Him and i believe if He doesnt like your music your clothes and your hair he will let you know. But Please before you make a statement about someones hair or clothes that may result in turning them away from the LORD,just remember God loves us,no matter how we look, and we should pray that God would give us words to say to others that may lead them to Christ.

Yea, I just think people like Billy are pushing youth away from church by acting this way. I dont think he does it on purpose, but he's just old school. Times change, people change..BUT the Bible remains the same, and it doesnt speak of this kind of behavior. I guess im just wanting people that think this way to open thier eyes and leave opinion out of the preaching. If Mt Ash would hold a youth rally and embrace new christian music, they would see the lord move in thier church. In fact, the first group that ever caught my attention and made be think about becoming a christian was Disciple, a heavy metal band. It sure wasnt southern gospel, as I couldnt relate to that, as its 50 years old.

your story shocks me. I was a member of Mountain Ash Baptist before I moved away 25 years ago. I loved that church. I have known Billy for over 30 years and love him dearly. That just does not sound like the Billy Carpenter I know. You judge him and tell this story accusing him of being the reason that the young man in black didn't get what he needed or whatever BUT what about the people who read your post on this forum? Maybe someone was planning on going to church and after reading your negative post - decided not to. Sometimes it is best to keep your judgemental opinions to yourself. If you chose not to go back to Mt Ash, then it should be between you and the Lord. If you needed to express your opinion, then you should have went to Billy and talked to him about it. Putting this story on the world wide net is NOT what God meant for you to do.

I used to live in Jellico, and went to this church, and yes, Billy does say things like that. I can see this persons point. There isnt any modern churchs around jellico, especially mt ash. I think its a good church, and im a firm believer in christ..BUT..you have to get kids in the door, and that attitude wont do it, and im sure David didnt play southern gospel for the lord in the bible days, so people need to be open to different forms of worship. I think the person that posted this wasnt trying to judge, but open eyes..and there's nothing wrong with that. I look at ot like this: Lets try to get people SAVED, not run them off with opinions thats not in the bible, and this was clearly opinion that Billy spoke of ( i heard him make a comment kinda like that ). I think Billys a great guy and probably didnt mean no harm. I think you people was too hard on the poster of this, though..they was actually right about the stuff about mt ash...

also true about Holy Joe...I remember that..also true about the Cupps, cause they have done that more than once to groups that are a different genra ..Not opinions people, fact..whether you like it or not, people seem to get judged in the small town of Jellico, especially by your looks or music you listen to...You cant beat this person up for telling the truth. I agree 110%. We are Christians, and we shouldnt give the world even more reasons to judge US

The more I read this, the more upset I get. Here's fact: We are ALL human, and just because someone makes a suggestion, you act like they are hell bound. I cant speak for anyone else, but im saved, and yes, I disagree with certain preachers and other brothers and sisters...thats why we have different denominations...its different viewpoints. Thats human. It doesnt make you demon possessed. I started reading this, and agree strongly with the person that posted it, and ive made several replies today because I am in utter disbelief that you especially would say some of the things you said in this post. Well, here I am, someone else that agrees. YOU are the reason that people are straying away from churches around here..YOUR attitude is what drives people away. People are on here talking about embracing new music for worship and greeting the lost with open arms, which Jesus himself did. I myself have not judged Billy, but rather point out where him and Mt Ash could improve. If you think im wrong, go to that church and tell the a rock christian band wants to play there...wont happen. And you talk about judging people? Thats not what its about!!! Thats the reason I left Jellico..Love the people, but alot of you judge people ( more than other towns ive lived in )...Get with the times..its not 1950, as much as you like to play the Mayberry card down there. Embrace the lost and do what Jesus wants us to do...just friendly advice

Remember, Jesus Christ was despised and ultimately killed by the most pious rule abiding church of his day the Pharacees.

The ignorance in our local churches is rampant and is no doubt one of the primary reasons attendence continues to decline.

Open minds and open hearts are both needed.

I used to go to Mr Ash church and there were 3 young men about college age that came in the church with caps on and one of the deacons went directly to them and asked them to remove their hats and they left. I was a member there and I so disagreed with that. God didnt care if they had a hat on...they were in church. Girls were allowed to wear hats. These boys may have never gone to church and didnt realize they shouldnt wear their caps. Billy was also so opinionated about gay people, fat people and anybody else that didnt fit what he thought was acceptable. I even saw him mock the way gay men walk. He was getting ready to baptize a few people and a woman had on a short dress and as she walked up the aisle, he was saying how women entice men to rape them wearing mini skirts. The woman was tugging at her dress trying to make it longer. I felt sorry for her and shortly afterwards, I quit going there. It just wasnt for me anymore.

I think Billy is a good man. I do believe however that most ot the Baptist Churches in the south have religioned themselves right out of revelence.

Whether it is running people down for drinking a beer or two, discriminatating against gay people or running down modern gospel music, it is all directly against the teachings of Christ. Christ drank daily, befriended the least reputable people in his community and continually broke and protested the rules of the Pharacees (the most holy and popular church of his day, it was the church that the so called good people attended).

The truth is: social norms should have little to do with Christianity.

There is a new church coming to town. The pastor is very well known and liked by everyone. It will be an Independent Church. No offering, no deacons, No denominational agenda, just singing and preaching and learning about God.

Would you please tell us which comments are not the way it is. And, we love you too but young people are just not interested in the kind of music that we old people like. If the new Christain music will get them to church and keep them off the streets and drugs, then we should embrace it.

In order to get young people to come to church you have to have something or do something that they are interested in. I have went to the same church practically my whole life, and over the past several years our church has really grown with young people. We don't have a whole lot of teenagers on Sundays, but we have a Wednesday night program called TeamKids and we have several teenagers that come to that on Wednesday night. I live in LaFollette, and I know over here there are several churches that do this program and other programs like AWANA and so on. If I'm not mistaken Oswego Baptist over in Newcomb has a TeamKid program on Wednesday nights, and it is a really good and fun program for kids. In order for a church to start a program like this you have to have alot of help and people that are willing to help. You need to try and take your youth on trips to keep them interested in church. My church is going to Disney on Ice in a few weeks, but one of the problems that I think we have is trying to find something fun for the teenagers to do. I know a few weeks ago somebody mentioned that maybe we could take them to a concert in Knoxville. It was a christian rock concert (ThirdDay) and there were a few people that didn't think it was a good idea, because it might offend our older members. So, that went down the drain. I hadn't never heard the group sing, so I got on the internet the next day and listened to them and they were pretty good. I think older members need to realize it's not 1950 any longer, and the world has changed. I think it would have been a great thing to take the teenagers to that concert, because it was a christian concert. Some people just don't like the sound or beat of rock music, but this is not ordinary rock, it is christian rock. I would much rather have my kid listen to this kind of music than some of the trash that is out today, because one way or another they are going to listen to music, so why not take them to a christian rock concert and let them listen to good music that is praising god. We need help in finding something for our teenagers to do, without it ticking off our older members. Sometimes I get so fed up and think "That's the problem too many people want to have control over everything (too many chiefs and not enough indians), and they are "sticks in the mud". As long as you can understand the words of what they are singing what does in matter? Somebody said "Well I really couldn't understand them, and I listened to the CD." I listened to them on the internet and I could understand them completely. If you get a chance look them up online. The group is called ThirdDay and they are coming or might have already came to Knoxville. Too bad our teenagers are not going to get to go to it, because too many people are set in their Mayberry days. I'm not judging, just stating the facts.

Most of what you said was great except:
without ticking off the older memebers,

Which is more important, ticking off older memebers or evangelizing today's youth?

Like most Christians, you very much need to: Stop worrying about church issues and start worrying about living like Christ. What true Christian would really be ticked off with any program that got youth into the church?

I could say things that are much more bitter but I won't. I will leave this for your consideration.

Satan has sex, alcohol, drugs and his choice of music, what does the church offer as an attractice alternative?
