Eleven area black students win national scholarships

Ten outstanding black high school seniors from Kentucky and one from Southern Indiana are among 800 students nationwide who have won scholarships through the National Achievement Scholarship Program.

Thanks for running this story!! It is important to let our children know that the world cares about their academic achievements. My son Dah-Gee Davis lives with us in Warren County (Bowling Green), and yet the Daily News here in Bowling Green did NOT run this article! We are extremely dissapointed, however we hope they will correct this soon.

because its the political correct thing to do and if you dont mention BLACK KIDS then theres the sharptons and jacksons that'll have their jobs which is why im sure they won in the first place . nowdays you must throw in the tokens no matter what . now take those blacks that won .rest assured every one of them are really good athletes

Three things:

1) It is good that your son lives with you. Where else would he live?

2) The scholarship program probably didn't include the daily news in their press release.

3) I agree, why the emphasis on "black students" as opposed to just "students." Is it any wonder racism exists in this country today? It is obviously alive and well within certain parts of the black community.

did anyone not read the damm story . these scholarships were ONLY for black kids . my question ' what happens if we have national scholarships for ONLY white kids . ohhhhhh boy you already know

Society has pressed for multiculturalism and political correctiveness to the point to where we have to watch our backs so that we dont piss off a few black people or god forbid the almighty NAACP. (CNN)-- A whites-only scholarship to be awarded Wednesday by a student Republican organization at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island, has drawn both controversy and support.

"It all began two weeks ago as a way for the college Republican groups to express their opposition and tell people they are against race-based scholarships and affirmative action," June Speakman, faculty adviser for the College Republicans told CNN.

"We never expected such an overwhelming response of e-mails and media attention."

The scholarship is for $250, but College Republicans president Jason Mattera said he has received donations and pledges totaling $4,000 for future whites-only scholarships.

Mattera is of Puerto Rican descent and was awarded a $5,000 scholarship from the Hispanic College Fund. He said he believes being eligible for such scholarships gives him "an inherent advantage over my white peers." He wants the university to award scholarships based on merit and not ethnicity.

Applicants for the College Republicans' scholarship must be of Caucasian descent, have high honors, write an essay, and show an impressive list of accomplishments, Mattera said. Sixteen people applied.

Roger Williams University does not sponsor or endorse the scholarship, university spokesman Rick Goff told CNN.

"The scholarship is entirely initiated by the College Republicans at the university," he said.

Erin Bedell, the Roger Williams University student body president, said the scholarship's timing is suspect.

"The scholarship was put out in the beginning of February to counter Black History Month, specifically for Reginald Jones, an African-American conservative keynote speaker and author who will be speaking this evening at the Roger Williams College of Arts and Science building," Bedell said.

The state Republican Party has criticized the scholarship as having racist overtone

while I agree with your sentiment, why do you list us Jews as of "white origin"? That is ridiculous. Our origins trace back to Egypt where we were kept as slaves. There were no white people in Egypt. The Hebrew race is middle eastern. Israel is not in Europe. Moses did not look like Charleton Heston.

geez, you put a few "jews" on tv like Jerry Seinfeld who have had their bloodline watered down with multiracial ancestors so they have a light complexion and all of a sudden we're white.

I assure you, if we were white or "of white origin" Adolf Hitler would not have been killing us. The entire point of the Holocaust was to get rid of us because we weren't white and he didn't want us mixing our middle eastern blood in with the German white blood.

I'm not sure whether you were referring to me or not"excuse me", however rest assure that it wasn't my intentions to offend In any way. I was just posting information regarding different scholarships available for certain races. Now I can't control what is posted on these sites or how "Jewish" people are classified, again it was not my intention to offend...
