I just read that the DA- is reviewing the case to
determine if the Death penalty will apply-
so I doubt that either Starr of Lee was released.
The Belleville News released the story 02/06/07.
It is sad that Lee's life has had so many negative outcomes. The Lee I knew was all of the positive things you listed.I still have trouble beieving that my Lee is the Lee we have read about in the News and the above...It is so sad that Ryon lost his life in an abusive home. I wish that someone
would have got involved BEFORE anything happened to poor Ryon...Now we have lost Ryon and LEE.

It hurts me to see Lee in such a horrible mess. How did he get to be into such a horrible situation? The Lee I knew was a great guy
who would do anything for a friend. He was protective to his friends and did not have any enemies. He was a great student and
very gentle and easy going... How did he change into a person who would or could murder a child?
It has been quite an emotional rollercoaster watching the unfolding drama of poor Ryon's life and death. I think that we do need to look a little harder at the Systems in place so that we can improve the systems so we can hopefully help families cope-and give them support so that maybe we can prevent a case like this from happening again.
I do feel that this murder could have been prevented if People would have reported earlier abuse and got the System involved.
The family and the Babysitter should have intervened and reported ths abuse. Abuse is wrong and should never be tolerated! We must stand up to abuse and have strong social services and programs to help them get out of the abusive situation.
The System involved does need reconditioning,we made reports last week to get my 14 yr. old stepdaughter out of an abusive situation, it was brushed off as a rebellious 14yr old girl. It took a hostage situation and standoff with a swat team in Dupo, Il the othernite to get her out of it. Mom left her in the house with crazed stepfather. We (her father and I) have her now thanks to the grace of God and prayers. And we plan on keeping her Safe.

i knew lee "leebo" for almost 20 years...and i'll say this...was he a drug user? sure. did he sell drugs? yah. could he have hurt this kid? i dont really think he had it in him. look the reality is there are alot of people who are going to claim to be lee's friend when they are just aquaintenances. the reality is lee was a guy who grew up in the county, he wasnt a thug from the streets as hes being prtrayed. he was a soft spoken guy who defintiely like to party, but alos had an edgy side.
has he ever punched anyone out> sure he did...so have i. that doesnt make you child killer.
one thing i do know about lee is that hes a user, not so much of drugs but of people. i can tell you he was with this girl because he had burned all of his bridges...lost all of his friends...
and i guarantee that when the facts come out she will have been the one that killed this boy. its just taking alot of time for the cops to neatly seal the murder up in "the black dating the white chick did it" package.
im just an average white guy from mhigh ridge who works a 40 hr a week job, and i have no reason to lie or laim untruths. the lee i know wasnt a great person or the best friend at all times, but hes certainly not a child killer...
you should all be ashamed of how quickly you fin d someone guilty with absolutely no information or facts.

I don't know Lee or the mother. But, when this all came about, I had a hunch that the mother may have been the culprit. My God, that poor little boy. Makes me sick to my stomach just thinking of the life he lived for such a short time. Some people should never be allowed to have children. And I agree, everyone is trying to jump on the band wagon with the "The black guy did it." I'm not sure who did. But, the truth will come out eventually. And may God have mercy on their soul for killing this innocent little boy.

They are both guilty, and both deserve the death penalty. Drugs change people. Lee may have been an ok guy at one time, but it sounds like he isn't anymore.
Posted on Wed, May. 03, 2006 Boy lived in urine-soaked closet, detective tells coroner's jury BY GEORGE PAWLACZYK News-Democrat BELLEVILLE - Six-year-old Ryon Smith tried so hard to push his way out of his improvised closet prison that his mother and her boyfriend had to shove heavy furniture against the door. And when the little boy was let out of his dark, urine-stained jail on Christmas Eve, one of his final acts was to defiantly bite the finger of Lee D. Crutchfield, 33, the man who police say became enraged and beat the child so severely he died the next day. On the autopsy table, the emaciated victim's body was covered with bruising to the extent that police witnesses could not discern his race. These grim, never-before-publicized facts of Ryon's death, came from Cahokia Police Detective Tim Schrader, who testified Wednesday at a hearing held by the office of St. Clair County Coroner Rick Stone. Schrader, one of the lead investigators into the boy's death, took the witness stand during the coroner's inquest, a routine procedure that officially established the cause of death as homicide, even though murder charges were lodged months ago. Crutchfield and Smith's mother, Starr Lohman, 24, were charged in December and later indicted on first-degree murder charges. Both pleaded not guilty and are being held in the St. Clair County Jail. State's Attorney Robert Haida has said he is reviewing the case to see whether the defendants, if found guilty, qualify for the death penalty. The six-member coroner's jury returned in three minutes with its verdict of homicide. Schrader, the only witness, said the Cahokia police investigation showed Lohman forced Ryon to spend hours in the closet, where he had no choice but to urinate on the floor or on his blankets. The officer said the child was not enrolled in school. He said she and Crutchfield routinely moved a large armoire, or mobile wood wardrobe, against the closet door to make sure Ryon did not escape. "The mother said he spent more time inside than outside the closet," Schrader said, "She said her son had problems." On Christmas Day, minutes after Lohman called to say her son was not breathing, Cahokia police arrived. The boy was pronounced dead at a hospital. "She said her son had problems," that required being shut away in the closet. "I did not know what color that the little boy was," said Schrader, referring to dark bruises on Smith, who is white. The detective said the bruising covered, "Every inch of the little boy's body.... He had bruises head to toe." In the house on Upper Cahokia Road, Schrader said police found no toys of the type a six-year-old might play with, but noticed other things, such as like blocks a toddler might like. Lohman's 20-month-old son was also at the home. Schrader said the closet was stained with urine and contained only a few blankets. Schrader said that Crutchfield told investigators that when Ryon bit his finger on Christmas Eve and wouldn't let him go, he became infuriated and beat the boy. "He could not say how many times he struck the little boy," the officer said on the witness stand. Lohman told investigators her boyfriend began beating the child but also could not describe how many punches her son endured, Schrader testified. After the beating, Ryon was dressed with extra clothing, apparently because his mother said he was always cold, even though, said Schrader, the temperature inside the house was 90 degrees

Lee is guilty! I knew him in my late teens. he was huge into drugs & lied, cheated & stole all the time! He faked an accident at his job as a valet, claimed he slipped on oil spot, to get a settlement. He was on acid, coke, pot, crack...you name it, he was on it. he was never in his right mind. I believe he was all drugged up & lost it & killed this innocent lil kid. Wish he would have overdosed & killed himself before that innocent child was abused to death.
why didn't you say something to him earlier,or were you afraid he might not sell you drugs

I love how allllll you attention whores have all these things to say about lee...well iknow for a fact that most people who"knew" lee mostly just bought drugs from him or through him...Now what i want to know is why not tell that story huh....I've known lee since he was 17 and we were close I can't even say if he did it all I do know there sure is a lot of focus on him and not the MOm or her family...by the way I beleive her father is in jail for raping and killing a teen girl...Im not saying he is or is not innocent what I am saying is in typical dumb ass fashion after someone becomes "infamous" or famous by any mean dozens of people come out of the wood work..."i knew him" he was always bad" blah blah..hey jakbags if he was as bad as you all would like to believe why now why not then to come out with these stories...i think instead of "worrying "about his situation and throwing all this mud ...you should tell whole truths then see if anyone cares about your oppurtunistic opinion...

This has been a horrible situation and it has caused so many people so much pain. I have tried to defend Lee from the start but after some of the people have come forward in the various blogs I see that the Lee I knew in grade school is not the same Lee. Even though I had not seen Lee in many years I have felt that he would not be capable of murdering a child. Maybe it is selfish of me to assume that but the Lee I went to school with and was friends with was not capable of violence. People change for the good and bad...It seems as if the media is trying to make Lee look like a big monster compared to the frail little Starr. Maybe the race card is being played by them as well. I have tried to keep the faith that Lee is innocent yet it is hard when there are so many people saying he has such a shady past. Maybe some people knew Lee and others just want to pretend they knew him but we did go to school together until we went to HS and were friends until we lost touch. But he will always have a place in my heart and be my friend. I was not ever afraid of Lee and if I saw him in passing I would not fear him. I wish that I was there for him and was able to get him help for his drug issues and problems. Of course our lives seem to have gone in opposite directions but he was and always will be my friend Lee. So Lee remember you do have a friend out there who does care.
I have felt that Starr is guilty of the abuse and death of Ryon. Was Lee involved because he knew that Ryon was abused and murdered- possibly- was he scared to call the police? Probably- a white child beaten to death and a whacked out hysterical white mom and then Lee a big black man.
I guess he would be scared to call 911.
Lee may have been shady and done drugs but I can't believe he would murder a child. It certainly does seem as if Lee is being set up to take the fall for Starr.
I do believe that this was a horrible situation that should have been stopped and prevented by intervention. It is sad that poor little Ryon was not in school and nobody cared enough to step in. Where was his daddy? If he cared he should have stepped in. Why did his grandparents not step in?
Where were the child protection agencies? It certainly shows that the system has many cracks in it.

Many excellent points made concerning the fine and wonderful Lee VS the sick and destructive Lee. This is crazy time for sure.
I havent received any mail from Lee for a few months . And I think of him daily. Just the other day,a movie came on that Lee and I used to watch all the time... Cape Fear.'Fear 'seems to be the emotion that many of you have felt or feel. I understand. When he was well and whole,he was not someone to be feared and I hang onto that thought.

There are many people with Ryon's blood on their hands in this case. Many! Lots of sick/disfunctional/drug crazed people surrounded that poor, poor child. And Lee ? I still cant get a grip on this !

I have always loved Lee deeply......and he still lives in my heart. God be with you,Lee.....and ALL whom you have hurt in any way. Many are the amazing memories I have of you.(Just wanted this on the record....)

It is almost as if he has two or multiple personalities. We all have different experiences
with him-some good and some bad.
Does anyone know anymore about when the trial will begin or anymore info- such as if they decided on if it were a dealth penalty case yet?
Or if they changed the judge?

Concerned.......you got that right> many personalites that began to downward sprial. I personally, saw him to fall apart some time ago.

.

I have tried ,in vain,to reach his attorney ? I have not had any calls returned.

Id love to know the answers to the same questions you have !! It sure seems to be a death penalty case from what I know ? At the least,I dont see Lee walking away from this ? I wish I knew where info could be obtained? Is it normal for someone to sit in jail for this long before a trial ??

If you have any news, please, share it.

By the way Oh Yeah Lee grew up in the city. He lived near Jefferson and Park in St.Louis City.
He may have hung in the county and later moved to the COUNTY but he lived in the City at least until HS.
Not everyone Lee knows is/was a whore or a drug seeker/dealer- Maybe you are the one with the problem. I am sure that most people are not trying to seek attention either- we are just concerned about an old friend. Maybe you are the one who was not a true friend to Lee and possibly are part of Lee's change in his lifestyle and BAD HABITS. Because when I knew him he did not do drugs or cheat/steal/con or have a undesirable lifestyle...

There is no need to try to blame someone else for this individuals behavior. If he was addicted to drugs, or whatever he was doing, that was by his own choice. He is obviously a grown man w/thoughts of right and wrong-EVERYONE KNOWS IT IS WRONG TO BEAT A CHILD, WHEN HE GETS TO PRISON HE AND THE MOTHER OF THIS INNOCENT CHILD WILL GET EXACTLY WHAT THEY DESERVE. Who cares if he had real friends or not, that boy will never get a chance to have any friends-HE AND THE MOTHER ARE DEVILS WALKING THE EARTH, THEY SHOULD ALSO BE BEAT TO DEATH!! Why would anyone concern themselves w/these to pieces of trash, the only concern should be that they both go to prison, never to get out. You have a lot of nerve to try to defend such a horrible person!!!

I totally agree with you!! But I have 1 question. Was both of them there when the child was being beaten by which ever one did the beating? If so, no matter who did the beating the other one should pay too. How can any human being just sit there and let this happen?? Any person with any sense of right and wrong couldn't just sit there and let this innocent child die!!
I hope that if they were both there that they go to jail so that they can get the beating that they deserve and die a slow death like that poor innocent child.
