I have two children that will have to go by the dress code. I think it's great personally. I feel that all grades should have to wear the uniforms.

First of all, Laura S, all public schools are not allowed to wear uniforms. Only the state can enforce uniforms, and it would have to be a state wide decision and execution. If you want your kids to wear uniforms, go to a private school.

Next, i think that it is a lot of political huff and puff that draws way too much attention to something so stupid. not to mention stripping kids of their individuality!!! which to be frank, at their age, it is a very important thing to them.

But just think of all the time that the school board put into deciding what colors would be deemed "appropriate" and all the other mumbo jumbo BS that only puts a strain on lesser financially established families that have to go out and buy new clothes yet again and just dismiss all the perfectly descent clothes that their kids have not yet outgrown.

Then think how much they could have accomplished if they had put their efforts into something like say... the kids EDUCATION!!! Or anything positive and supportive to our kids as opposed to something so negative and restricting. You can only bind something so tight before it snaps.

i think it is absolutely REDICULOUS!!!! And some people happen to thrive off of controversy! Make a big deal over something so small, and they feel they have some means of control.

When my boys start school in Jasper, i pray this BS is still not going on, because there will be trouble. My husband and I both refuse to adhere to such rediculous measures.

and if there are enough people in the district whom are logical enough to see how much a dress code like this is... A JOKE... all that has to be done is for the people to unite and put their foot down.
REMEMBER PEOPLE = MAJORITY RULES!!!

Besides, whomever designed the dress code... was obviously not very logical!!!! Most of it is rediculous in and of itself and the rest... soooooo many holes can be punched through just about every other topic!
-for example... the hiding weapons factor - unless you have them wearing spandex suits or naked... where there's a will, there's a way. Has anybody thought about perhaps better student counselors? Getting to know your students! Pay a little attention to the kids who you're there to teach and provide education and life skills to? Or are they just another headcount to get more money out of the state!
Or how about this one, loosen your pockets a little and just break down and get friggin' metal detectors - and let the kids have what tiny bit of freedom the used to have! Happy kids are healthy kids. And if they're happy, they'll be able to focus more on what matters 'like their grades and more importantly their learning' instead of this big controvercial ordeal!

I mean, come on people!! I can't help but to be reminded of the Fifth Harry Potter Movie. Can you say "carried away"???

Laura I agree with you, I like the idea of the dress code. I spent a lot less money on clothes this year than I have in the past.

However, I think there needs to be something set up for parents who can not afford to buy new clothes for their children.

I think when children stop worrying about what brand clothing their friends are wearing they might start worry about the grades a little more.

But hey, that is just MY opinion!

Dress code is wonderful. Not only for the school but mainly for the parents who must purchase the uniforms. This way the parents will not have to fear the students competeting for best dress or how much was paid for the clothes. Now all students can go to school dressed comfortable for around say $15.00 or $18.00 with their shoes costing the most. And or yes, the students will all look alike! Now for the parents who cannot see above that, something is really wrong with you and your thoughts. By the way if any parent don't like the dress code, why not take your student and enroll them in another school where their behavior along with the parents' behavior will be tolerated. Come on give the school a break! Now maybe focus will be placed more on the level of education rather than the designer clothes that Wanda Generic is not wearing this year.

I am truly sorry for those who do not like the dress code, but I have done loads of research on this ordeal; honestly I would like the dress code to go all the way to the Pre-K years for the simple factor that each individual child will see how much their clothes look similar to other's clothing therefore by doing this they can spend more time on the grades and the future prospects of going further in their lives instead of who is wearing what and how can my mommy-daddy get that for me! Metal detectors are a nice idea for some of the places that cannot seem to control the violence in the school, therefore this one dress code is implemented just before the Drastic measures of Metal Detectors. Personality is made at home and by the peers the children are around NOT by their Clothing they are allowed to wear! For those whom seem to think that the dress code policy is something to rival about then please find something more constructive to worry about not the type of dress code the children are wearing, because this is one way the state can provide your child's safety and worry about the grades as well. If I knew where to go exactly I would go to that place and see if they can get the dress code policy lowered to the Pre-K elementary part of school as well. Private schools are good, but so is public schools that try to protect the children that are under their roof.

Caramia,
Where did I say all public schools have to wear uniforms?? I feel all the grades, not
just 5th and up,should have to wear them. I have a 2nd and a 4th grader who won't be wearing the uniforms and i wish they were. It's affordable and I think it will help kids focus on their school work instead of trying to keep up with the "latest fashion".
Or how about being teased for not wearing the right clothes. I teach my children that they can be individuals no matter what they where or how they look. I love the uniforms and if you were that worried about it maybe you should have been at the school board meeting when they decided all this. But your just like all the other parents who are complaining about it AFTER the fact!!!
Your answer was a little "carried away" :)

First of all, I don't know where you went to school but perhaps they should have spent more time on spelling in your classroom. Second you mention people who thrive on controversy and the small things. Sounds to me like the shoe fits! I agree with the uniforms. Maybe these kids will quit judging each other and themselves by what they have or don't have. Keeps the mind focused on what is important(that would be education) and not what some little girl is showing off that day or whether that guys shoes match his shirt. Makes the kids equal.

Why uniforms? What has changed at school to make this necessary?
IMHO...Our school officials have found it easier to inact "programs" that make it look like they are doing something to solve problems than to fight the legal mumbo jumbo being thrown at them by our liberal lawmakers.
When I went to school here's what would have happened:
1.Incident: Little Johnny comes to school and defies a rule, any rule.
School action: Little Johnny has his butt blistered with a board. His parents are notified.
Parental Action: Little Johnny has his butt blistered again when he gets home. He receives a stern parental warning about doing this again.
2.Incident: Little Johnny defies rules again.
School Action: His parents are notified and told to come in for a conference.
Parental Action: At least one parent comes to school. Little Johnny is in deep trouble.
Conference action: Principal explains to Little Johnny and his parent that school is place to learn and if he cannot follow rules he will be kicked out of school so those who want to learn will not be interrupted. Depending upon his attitude and that of his parent one of two things happen:
Thing A. Little Johnny gets his butt blistered again and is sent back to class.
Thing B. Little Johnny is expelled for some length of time. He has a hard time getting back into school.

IT AIN'T DONE THIS WAY ANYMORE!! BIG PROBLEM.

Schools have tried simple dress codes that allowed kids to be individuals. But, there are some who want to abuse the dress code and their parents think it is just ginger peachy to do so.
Now some want to play "gangsta" and wear certain colors and attack others who happen to like that color if they are not "gangstas." If the school acts to stop them their parents are at the next school board meeting ranting and raving and threatning legal action.
So now there are uniforms....live with it.

I did not attend Jasper schools through my high schools years, but I did attend all the way through the fifth grade. I then switched to a nearby school and graduated last year.

I would like to input a comment on behalf of a\the student's perspective.

Never once throughout my entire high school career was I taunted because of what brand of clothing I wore. In fact, my classmates did not appear to care anymore about the clothes on their body than the average adult.

As for the dangerous aspects of the previous dress code, maybe their should have been more harsh punishments for gang activity. Like expulsion.

Expecting all the behavior problems to go away because of a dress code is entirely unrealistic.

Don't mistake my meaning. I do not oppose dress codes in general. They provide students with an understanding of what is appropriate. They also prepare students for the workplace where what you wear could have a bearing on your career.

I know that their will be much grumbling about the dress code amongst the students, which will definitely be more of a distraction than what brand of clothing Jane Smith is wearing.

Also, how much time do you think teenagers spend thinking about clothes? Do you think teens pick out an outfit, wear it to school, and think of nothing else all day but what they are wearing? As a recent high school student, I would like a little more confidence than that from my parents.

I graduated valedictorian. And no, I was not wearing a uniform while making those grades.

But, whatever any of you think is fine with me. To each his own.

As you go through life you will find that society reacts to the 10% who defy rules. Instead of taking action against the them alone, everyone is force to suffer in some way.
Jasper should do like one school is doing. Anyone who breaks a dress code must either change into bright orange coveralls or go home. The rest of the student body goes on with school as usual and suffer in no way.
