Wearing a seatbelt should be like wearing a helmet on a bike. It should be voluntary. People who want to die in a car accident can feel free to not wear their belt, and people who don't wear a helmet will have their brains hosed off the highway if they crash.

Its a personal choice though. But in my opinion, if you aren't being safe then don't expect the taxpayers to pay for your funeral or hospital bills when you are a vegetable.

please give the family of this young man some due respect, i realize that not wearing a seatbelt probably resulted in this mans death but if you cant remember when you were 19 and how invincible you thought you were, then you have issues. my heart and prayers go out to this family and anyone who knew him, i hope you can find closure and peace amid this tragedy.

I personally knew him and it would be nice if you weren't so inconsiderate. This is a hard time and his parents were some of the nicest people I've met. It's such a shame that this happened.

We all know that. The issue is that this fellow just might still be alive if he had his seatbelt on. It has NOTHING to do with respect for the grieving family. Why ignore the 800 lb gorilla in the car?

Today is Matt's birthday. He would have been 27 today. I just found this thread, as I was looking up something on Matt. All of the people of this thread should have know this wonderful young man. He gave so much of himself to help others...kind, reached out for the underdogs, would give you the shirt off of his back.
Matt committed suicide. I found a text message on his phone minutes before he died. He texted someone asking if a driver drove fast into a guardrail, would they die. A friend told him maybe not as his seatbelt and airbags might save him...so off came the seatbelts. That is the sad story. Seatbelts save...and he didn't want to live.
Message might be, if your friend says something strange, maybe you should call him and see what is really up. Texting and other modern communications can be interpreted almost anyway you want to read it.
