cheese please

You either loved it or hated it, there wasn't much inbetween. I myself loved it and haven't been able to find a cheese with the same flavor. Some come close but not just like it.

Has anyone ever tried any types of cheese at the deli in walmart or other places that has the same flavor? I was told today that Land-O-Lakes American cheese from a deli is the same. Any help would be appreciated.

I remember it...I made mac&cheese for my kids with it, and they loved it.

Haven't found any other brand with the same taste.

I guess the government can do 1 thing right..make cheese.:-)

I remember it being given out until the Soviet Union fell, then it disappeared. There was a report on the news that the president at the time, think it was Bush Sr., decided to send it, along with some other stuff, to Russia to help feed the people there. Since then it's not been given out with the other commodities. Dang commies, took our cheese!

Holy jeez, yes. Gov'ment cheese was the best! Someone told me earlier this year that the taste of that cheese was mostly due to the time that it sat in bins before making it out to us. He told me this: Go out and buy a block of mild cheddar cheese, and put it in the bottom drawer of the fridge. Do not touch or unwrap it for a year, and bada-boom, it tastes like that good ol' gov'ment cheese. I haven't done it myself, due to lack of will power, but give it a shot.

It was terrific.

Some company had to make it for the government by contract.

Now we just need to find that company.

I have read that it was a Land O Lakes sharp cheddar but I don't know. Someone said it was in small print on the box their chese had come in log ago. I recall my mom would buy some exact tasting cheese in road trips, so I know it was sold commercially. You had to get it in a deli though. Now, about 2 years ago Walmart had a cheese that had a mild hint of that flavor but it wasn't the same . Thanks for the info. We should try the suggestion of aging our own mild cheddar for a year. Sealed up it won't go bad.

Thanks! I'm gonna try this. I talked with a lady about 2 weeks ago who told me the cheese some a cheddar. She also said the reason cheese doesn't taste the same nowadays is cause manufacturers don't take the time to do it. They produce it really fast to feed the populus. The aging thing makes sense. Yep, I'm gonna try this. Sealed up the cheese won't go bad. We all know lots of cheeses are aged for a year or more for a more pungent taste and they just get rid of the mold, wrap it back up and age it some more.
