I am thinking about moving to Fentress County and have a question. I observed that the average income for Wilder is above $50,000 and the rest of the county is in the teens. I do not understand this because there is very little industry in Wilder. Is this a rich retirement community or what?

yes, rich people bought the land in a hole with no water or other services (except eletric). No some are crying for city water. i say they dig a well.
No jobs in the area. Most people grow pot along with collect food stamps

The land in wilder has been abused in about every way possible. From mining to logging to drilling. Most of the properties cannot support septic systems properly. The runoff fouled the nearby creeks and rivers for several decades and is still a problem. Wilder and Oak Ridge are the two least desirable places to live in Tennesse, in my opinion. For your health I suggest you look for another location.

Yeah, how many years than been looking? There was more industry in the 60's&70's than they are now.Everone that runs for County Ex. promises new industry,But we have little to show for it.Almost everyone that lives here works Crossville or Cookeville.I love most of the people here, but we have little to offer. If you have a job you had better stay with it.

The people that have moved to Wilder are nice and some is retired. However, they bought there because it was VERY CHEAP. And now they are there, they want to make it into something else. I dont see how their little community can be considered richer than any other part of Fentress County. There are not enough people there to have accurate statistics.
It is a beautiful part of country, but why mess it up by building homes on it, to just want to end up turning it into a retirement communtiy. It is nothing but rock and who wants to build their house on a rock? What happens when all that blasting, building, and things like that go on, eventually that rock will come down. Good luck in finding a home, hopefully it will be Fentress County, but you better do some real hard research on Wilder Mt. before you buy. You could get screwed like the rest did.

I was raised n Wilder, so this will be from someone who knows the location. Wilder originally go its bad name due o coal mining strikes and etc. I would describe the people that live there just good ole boys and girls. They do drink and smoke pot and a few sales pills. However the majority of bad stuff comes from people that are not originally from the area. Water will need to be dug, you will need septic and Jobs will be 30 plus minutes away. The meth person should look in the mirror or around his or her house.

Wilder is a good place. Its no different than other small communities in Tennessee except the Wilder property owners have a higher income average than some other areas of Fentress co.I grew up in Wilder, went to school in Wilder and that make me local. Im a property owner in several Fentress co communities. Wilder is just one of them. Im glad I have property in Wilder. ITS A GOOD VALUE!!
