Sam: If your grammar and spelling skills are an indicator of your abilities, I wouldn't hire you either. "Collage" - college; "though" - thought.......

Oh lord, such bad grammar, it's all over the place. If you had a college education you should know how to spell correctly. I wouldn't hire someone who had misspellings all over their application, "collage" or not.

I'm certain that "collage" was just a typo by Sam. He certainly can spell it if he has a college degree. Most people type these comments quickly and send them off without proof-reading, and most readers then overlook such trivial "mistakes" and read the comments for their messages, not their styles. If you want perfect grammar, read a textbook. If you want to converse within this community, read for the substance with an open and forgiving mind, please.

First of all you can not find a job sitting on your couch!! Most people whine about not being able to find employment in Fentress County but they do not show up day after day after day after day ....and around here, if you don't know someone, then you got to be there every morning to prove to the employer that you are willing to work and that you are determined, strong willed, persistant. This will give the local employer a chance to see that should they give you a chance at least you would be there every day....and Lord knows that is important to the employer! If you don't show on a regular basis then they classify you with the druggies and your application is tossed into file 13!!

With all due respect, Old Chic, you must admit that we do give employment preference to those who have family connections here, and this leads to unfair (illegal?) practices. When people have been protected, employed, and pampered on the justification of family connections, they find it difficult to live in the real world out there, if they ever leave Jamestown. So this discrimination doesn't do any favor for anyone in the long run.

I agree with that statement but what about good old fashioned foot work? I work with people everyday that have absolutely no conncetions and they are coming back with jobs....not that it is easy or quick but they are finding work....some it takes 3 months or more but they are doing it so for me it goes without saying...the more determined and persistant you are the more apt you are in getting a job in county. You can't just sit back and say well I don't know anyone so I won't be getting no job in Jamestown....then again there are God only knows how many Fentress County folks that have to drive out of county everyday for employment...they are not complaining...well maybe they are ....but they are doing it!! They have to!! They have bills to pay! I just hate to hear someone complain when they have not exhausted all of their resources. Pride and determination goes a long way in becoming successful.

Agreed. Sooner or later, some job is available if one is persistent, but it IS dispiriting to watch opportunities offered to "the chosen" when one is more qualified, more experienced, and/or more willing to work. Our community would be the richer without this discrimination.
Yes, people can eventually find employment if they are persistent and humble, but I believe the issue is that there are people who would be excellent employees who become disheartened, give up, and leave Jamestown. And it's Jamestown's loss when they leave.

I agree. Especially when someone is qualified for a position and they are looked over by the "Buddy" system. I have wore that shoe more than once. By the grace of God I have a decent job here in town. But probably not for long since I opened my mouth and inserted foot re:minorities!! Oh well...thank the Lord I have great interview skills!!
