I actually think that if you are named on here, that if you call in you can get the Ip pretty easy. Not 100% sure about that, but I believe that if you can prove that your name is being run thru the mud you can get those from topix.

AS I understand, if someone (a neighbor or someone parked near your place) is "using" your bandwidth and posts things on Topix that violate the terms of service, Topix could ban YOU as the identified IP address, even though you had no knowledge of the activity.

Your IP address is a private matter and is set up by the phone company when you get Internet and is not available for just anyone. It is up to you to keep it confidental. Under certain conditions the proper authorities could obtain it and anything put on Topix from your computer you are responsible for. Hope this helps! Hang on to your laptop! Having any computer password protected is a good idea too.

Aw, you're a sweetheart, Sharing Info! But what about the issues that were mentioned? If someone else is using your bandwidth, will their comments show up with your IP address?

Your IP address is just for your computer. Someone can use your wireless connection but it will show up with a different IP address. Of course, like someone else said, if they are using a used or stolen computer and are using someone else's wireless connection then it would be rather hard to find out who they really are.

If you are worried about someone using your wireless connection, you should be able to set a password so that no one can just park there car in front of your house and use it. Check with your provider for more information about password protecting your wireless connection if you don't already know how to do this.

If there using a Wireless Router it is all tied back to a router. Which holds the ip address from the phone company. So there me and you could surf the internet with the same ip if i was using your wireless off your router. Its all tied back to a MAC address off of your computer. Every ethernet card and wireless device has a mac address thats where it can be tied back to the specific computer. I would suggest setting up wireless security off your router. that would help out. Its actually pretty easy to find out who you are. Topix has all the ips and then get a court order for twin lakes to release the ip. to the court but it will take a court order to get it done.

You can't simply get information like this. SOme of you seem to be so uneducated when it comes to this type of stuff. First, forget about getting someone IP, you can't do it not only logistically but it is also illegal. Second, yes, if someone has made a threat to you, one can call the police make a report, and if the threat is serious and evidence is there to link someone to it, then a court can get that information IF they are going to move to trail, which they prolly wont anyway, because if it is something stupid like a topix threat or pointless shit talk it will be thrown out or laywers will get involved and squash it with minimal punishment. Everything that is yours protected by a release. PERIOD you don't sign a release, then nobody can have your info. It is hard for you to even call you TV company and get info if you are not on the account but you still have permission form the person on the account, they simply wont give it to you. Your IP address will not be shown no matter what , ONly an ISP which will show as some server location far from your actual address.

It depends on who the threat is to. I read a couple threatened a judge somewhere in KY, days later they were in jail on terroistic threats. So it can be done. People should just get along. Love conqors all.

To say someone can't do it seems to me to be too strong of a statement. There are people that can hack into just about any computer and get whatever info they want. They can even hack into Pentagon computers. To say it would be very difficult to do would be a better statement.

Yeah, it is possible, but only if you were either a computer savant, or you spent a very large amount of money and time to win the legal battle with topix and then twin lakes (or whoever the internet provider)...
