Summation - Fluoride Accidents/Poisionings:(Click for more detail)

Fluoride is a powerful poison - more acutely poisonous than lead. This explains why fluoride is the active ingredient in many pesticides and rodenticides. It also explains why accidental over-ingestion of fluoride can cause serious toxic symptoms.

As documented in the Journal of Dental Research (Whitford 1987, 1990), there is enough fluoride in a tube of children's fluoride toothpaste to kill an average-weighing child under the age of 9.

Each year there are thousands of reports to Poison Control centers in the United States related to excessive ingestion of fluoride products (toothpaste, mouthrinses, and supplements).

Malfunctioning water-fluoridation equipment, leading to excess levels of fluoride in water, has been another periodic source of acute fluoride poisoning.

Fluoride & the Brain
DIRECTORY: FAN > Health > Brain
Key Findings - Fluoride & the Brain:(Click for more detail)

1) Fluoride's ability to damage the brain represents one of the most active areas of research on fluoride toxicity today.

2) The research on fluoride and the brain has been fueled by 18 human studies from China, India, Iran, and Mexico finding elevated levels of fluoride exposure to be associated with IQ deficits in children. Fluoride's impact on IQ is exacerbated among children with low-iodine exposure.

3) The impact of fluoride on children's IQ has been documented even after controlling for children's lead exposure, iodine exposure, parental education and income status, and other known factors that might impact the results (Rocha-Amador 2007; Xiang 2003 a,b).

4) In addition to IQ studies, 3 studies (Yu 1996; Du 1992; Han 1989) have found that fluoride accumulates in the brain of the fetus, causing damage to cells and neurotransmitters and 1 study (Li 2004) has found a correlation between exposure to fluoride during fetal development and behavioral deficits among neonates.

5) Several recent studies have found that even adult exposures to fluoride may result in central nervous system disturbances, particularly among industrial workers.

5) The findings of neurological effects in fluoride-exposed humans is consistent with, and strengthened by, recent findings from over 40 animal studies published since 1992. As with the studies on humans, the studies on animals have reported an impairment in learning and memory prorcesses among the fluoride-treated groups.

6) The animal studies have also documented considerable evidence of direct toxic effects of fluoride on brain tissue, even at levels as low as 1 ppm fluoride in water (Varner 1998). These effects include:

-- reduction in nicotinic acetylcholine receptors;
-- reduction in lipid content;
-- impaired anti-oxidant defense systems;
-- damage to the hippocampus;
-- damage to the purkinje cells;
-- increased uptake of aluminum;
-- formation of beta-amyloid plaques (the classic brain abnormality in Alzheimer's disease);
-- exacerbation of lesions induced by iodine deficiency; and
-- accumulation of fluoride in the pineal gland.

Summation - Fluoride/Arthritis:(Click for more detail)

Excessive exposure to fluoride causes an arthritic disease called skeletal fluorosis.

Skeletal fluorosis, especially in its early stages, is a difficult disease to diagnose, and can be readily confused with various forms of arthritis including osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

The arthritic symptoms of fluorosis can occur before the onset of bone changes detectable by x-ray, thereby making the early stages of fluorosis difficult to differentiate from arthritis.

In the advanced stages of skeletal fluorosis, the spine may closely resemble the appearance of spondylosis/spondylitis and DISH (Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis).

Summation - Fluoride & Cancer:(Click for more detail)

According to the National Toxicology Program, "the preponderance of evidence" from laboratory 'in vitro' studies indicates that fluoride is a mutagen (a compound that can cause genetic damage).

It is generally accepted that if a substance can induce genetic damage there is a heightened risk that it could cause cancer as well.

While the concentrations of fluoride causing mutagenic damage in the in vitro studies is higher than the concentrations found in human blood, there are certain "microenvironments" in the body (e.g. the bones) where the concentrations of fluoride can accumulate to levels comparable to, or in excess of, those causing mutagenic effects in the laboratory.

Of particular concern are a series of studies indicating that fluoride can cause osteosarcoma (bone cancer) in both fluoride-treated male rats and boys under the age of 20 living in fluoridated areas. Osteosarcoma is a rare, but deadly, form of cancer that strikes primarily during the teenage years.

Of additional concern are recent studies indicating that:

Primates (humans and great apes) are more susceptible to the mutagenic effects of fluoride than rodents (rats);
An increased rate of mutagenic damage was detectable in humans exposed to only modestly elevated levels of fluoride; and
Workers exposed to fluoride in industry - in the absence of other known carcinogens such as PAH - suffered an increased occurrence of bladder cancer.

Gastrointestinal Tract
Key Findings - Fluoride & the Gastrointestinal Tract:(Click for more detail)

1) Gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g. nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting) are the most common early symptoms of acute fluoride poisoning.

2) Among people hypersensitive to fluoride, gastrointestinal ailments have been produced by 1 mg tablets of fluoride or by consumption of water fluoridated at 1 ppm.(A 1 mg fluoride tablet is more damaging than 1 ppm fluoride in water because a tablet produces a higher fluoride concentration in the stomach.)

3) A review of reports to Poison Control Centers in Utah found that vomiting was induced in children after ingestion of 5 to 9 mg of fluoride. In double-blind experiments, single doses of 6.8 mg of fluoride have induced vomiting, and other gastric symptoms, within 30 minutes.

4) A single ingestion of as little as 3 mg of fluoride, in carefully controlled clinical trials, has been found to produce damage to the gastric mucosa in healthy adult volunteers. No research has yet been conducted to determine the effect of lower doses with repeated exposure.

5) In studies where fluoride has been used (at doses of 18-34 mg/day) as an experimental drug for the treatment of osteoporosis, gastrointestinal disturbances are one of the two main side effects consistently encountered.

6) Among humans suffering from skeletal fluorosis, there is an increased occurence of gastrointestinal disorders. When fluoride intake is reduced among these patients, the gastrointestinal problems are among the first symptoms to disappear.

Fluoride Warnings for Infants
DIRECTORY: FAN > Health > Infant fluoride exposure
Summation - Fluoride Exposure During Infancy:

In contrast to recommendations adopted in the 1950s, fluoride supplementation is no longer recommended for newborn children. This includes both fluoride in drops, and fluoride in drinking water.

Not only is fluoride ingestion during infancy unnecessary, it can also be harmful - as suggested by a mounting body of evidence linking fluoride exposure during the first year of life with the development of dental fluorosis.(For pictures of dental fluorosis, click here)

Because of the risk for dental fluorosis, and the lack of demonstrable benefit from ingesting fluoride before teeth erupt, the American Dental Association - and a growing number of dental researchers - recommend that children under 12 months of age should not consume fluoridated water while babies under 6 months of age should not receive any fluoride drops or pills.

Fluoridated drinking water contains up to 200 times more fluoride than breast milk (1000 ppb in fluoridated tap water vs 5-10 ppb in breast milk). As a result, babies consuming formula made with fluoridated tap water are exposed to much higher levels of fluoride than a breast-fed infant.(A baby drinking fluoridated formula receives the highest dosage of fluoride among all age groups in the population (0.1-0.2+ mg/kg/day), whereas a breast-fed infant receives the lowest).

Dental fluorosis is not the only risk from early-life exposure to fluoride. A recent review in The Lancet describes fluoride as "an emerging neurotoxic substance" that may damage the developing brain. The National Research Council has identified fluoride as an "endocrine disrupter" that may impair thyroid function, while recent research from Harvard University has found a possible connection between fluoride and bone cancer.

TELLICO PLAINS, TENNESSEE- In a short meeting on Thursday night, Tellico Plains officials passed the 2010-2011 budget.

In old business, the board tackled fluoride usage in the water. At their Sept. meeting, city officials voted to survey citizens about the usage of fluoride in the water. Recent changes no longer mandate fluoride to be used. Sheets were placed at city hall for citizens to vote when they paid their water bill. The survey lasted for nearly two months.

As of 3 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 4, a total of 147 people had voiced their opinion on the fluoride usage, with 106 voting to discontinue fluoride usage and 41 people saying they would like to continue to use it. The board unanimously agreed to disallow fluoride usage in the water.

CDC and ADA Now Advise to Avoid Using Fluoride
Posted By Dr. Mercola | November 13 2010 |

A new study in the Journal of the American Dental Association finds once again that, contrary to what most people have been told, fluoride is actually bad for teeth.

Exposure to high levels of fluoride results in a condition known as fluorosis, in which tooth enamel becomes discolored. The condition can eventually lead to badly damaged teeth. The new study found that fluoride intake during a child's first few years of life is significantly associated with fluorosis, and warned against using fluoridated water in infant formula.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is of a similar opinion. According to their website:

"Recent evidence suggests that mixing powdered or liquid infant formula concentrate with fluoridated water on a regular basis may increase the chance of a child developing ... enamel fluorosis."

Your Toxic Tap Water

You’ll never look at tap water the same way again

Paul Joseph Watson
Prison Planet.com
Thursday, December 9, 2010

Dr. Paul Connett, Professor of Chemistry at St. Lawrence University in New York, gives a damning interview on the history of water fluoridation, the collusion of major industries to put certified toxic waste into your drinking water, and why government health authorities refuse to conduct scientific studies into the dangers of fluoridation. After watching this video, you will never look at tap water the same way again.

Connett describes how he initially thought people who opposed fluoridation were “a bunch of whackos,” before conducting his own research which found that sodium fluoride was a toxic substance that contributed to a wide array of health defects. Heavy industry is barred from dumping this toxic waste into the sea by international law, but being able to sell it enables them to remove its hazardous characteristic and it becomes a product, explains Connett, polluting not only our water supply but also toothpaste and thousands of different foods.

Fluoride in Water Linked to Lower IQ in Children

PRNewswire - Press release from Fluoride Action Network
December 21, 2010

Contact [email protected]

Fluoride is added to 70% of U.S. public drinking water supplies.

According to Paul Connett, Ph.D., director of the Fluoride Action Network, "This is the 24th study that has found this association, but this study is stronger than the rest because the authors have controlled for key confounding variables and in addition to correlating lowered IQ with levels of fluoride in the water, the authors found a correlation between lowered IQ and fluoride levels in children's blood.

Connett adds, "The result is that while the issue of fluoride's impact on IQ is being aggressively pursued around the world, practically no work has been done in the U.S. or other fluoridating countries to repeat their findings. Sadly, health agencies in fluoridated countries seem to be more intent on protecting the fluoridation program than protecting children's brains."

When the National Research Council of the National Academies reviewed this topic in their 507-page report "Fluoride in Drinking Water: A Review of EPA's Standards" published in 2006, only 5 of the 24 IQ studies were available in English. Even so the panel found the link between fluoride exposure and lowered IQ both consistent and "plausible."

According to Tara Blank, Ph.D., the Science and Health Officer for the Fluoride Action Network, "This should be the study that finally ends water fluoridation. Millions of American children are being exposed unnecessarily to this neurotoxin on a daily basis. Who in their right minds would risk lowering their child's intelligence in order to reduce a small amount of tooth decay, for which the evidence is very weak." Fluoride and the Thyroid

A major point of disturbance about the USDA¡¦s tolerance of 8 ¡V 10
mg/day of fluoride is that it only takes 2 ¡V 5 mg/day to disrupt the
thyroid. Here¡¦s what Fluoride Alert has to say:
¡§Starting in the 1930s and extending through to the 1970s, fluoride
was utilized by European and South American doctors as a drug to

Of concern today in the United States, and other highly fluoridated
countries, is the fact that some people are now regularly receiving
doses of fluoride that overlap, and exceed, the doses once shown to
reduce the activity of the thyroid.

Whereas doses of 2 to 5 mg/day of fluoride were shown effective at
depressing thyroid function, adults in fluoridated communities in
the U.S. are now regularly receiving between 1.6 and 6.6 mg/day
according to a 1991 report from the Department of Health and Human
While it may be that the thyroid in a patient with hyperthyroidism
is particularly susceptible to the anti-thyroid actions of fluoride,
there is concern that current fluoride exposures may be playing a
role in the widespread incidence of HYPO-thyroidism (under-active
thyroid) in the U.S.

serious condition with a diverse range of symptoms including:

City pol wants remove fluoride from New York's drinking water, citing safety concerns

Tuesday, December 28th 2010, 4:00 AM

Four decades after New York started adding fluoride to its water, a city councilman armed with new research is launching a campaign to stop the practice.

"This amounts to forced medication by the government," said Councilman Peter Vallone (D-Queens), who plans to introduce fluoride-removal legislation at the next Council meeting. "What's next? They decide we're depressed and add Prozac to our drinking water?"

Research shows fluoride is IQ-killer for children
While CDC calls it 'safe and healthy way to effectively prevent tooth decay'

Adding fluoride to city water systems, hailed by the Centers for Disease Control as "one of 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century," actually becomes an IQ-killer for children, according to a new report.

A Chinese study has been reported by the Fluoride Action Network that found a startling difference between children in two cities with significantly different levels of fluoride in their water systems.

The study involved 512 children between 8 to 13 years old in two Chinese villages that were about 50 miles apart. Wamaio had 2.47 milligrams per liter of fluoride and the village of Xinhuai had 0.36 milligrams per liter of fluoride.

The test showed the city with the higher fluoride had children with IQ scores 5-10 points lower.

The reports said the study rated 28 percent of the children in the low-fluoride town of Xinhuai as "bright, normal or higher intelligence," while only 8 percent in the high-fluoride Wamaio were in that category.

Further, it said 15 percent of the children in the high-fluoride city had scores indicating mental handicaps, while only 6 percent had the same results in the low-fluoride city.

Bombshell: Government Admits Fluoride Hurting Children

Alex Jones & Aaron Dykes
January 14, 2011

A significant milestone in the fight against fluoride emerged quietly and without major notice from the mainstream news last week. After decades of ignoring the research about the dangers and hailing water fluoridation as one of the 10 greatest health achievements of the 20th Century (CDC), the government is calling for a reduction in the amount of fluoride it adds to public water supplies, citing its negative effect on teeth (dental fluorosis). For the first time since 1962, the standard for fluoride will be lowered from 1.2 to 0.7 milligrams per liter.

Because fluoride from water builds up over time in the human body, this reduction will not eliminate the dangers of fluoride– which include risk of bone cancer, bone fractures, thyroid disorder, brain inflammation, lowered IQ and mental functions, sterility or reduced fertility and more. However, it is a good sign that the powers-that-be are losing ground on the fluoride debate. Further, the reduction of fluoridation is proof that the warnings from activists, critics and health professionals have been heard after all.

As Alex Jones points out in the video, many of those health professionals who have been blowing the whistle on fluoridation for decades are employees or union contractors of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other governmental regulation agencies. Their objections, based on alarming scientific studies such as the one linking fluoridation with a seven-fold increase in bone cancer for boys, have heretofore been almost wholly ignored, until now. One reason for this government admission, by the way, likely has to do with limiting liability for those harmful effects, or even establishing immunity for districts who adhere to lowering the fluoride standard against future claims to harm.

At the same time, hundreds of other chemicals including many toxic ingredients like lead, arsenic, radium and uranium are also found in public drinking water. Many of these dangerous toxins are put into the water as part of the fluoride-cocktail administered in the many municipalities across the United States and other Western countries, or are leached into the supply via the acidic levels of fluoride. The compound is often not simply sodium fluoride, but a mix of toxic waste byproduct [see chart for hydrofluosilicic acid] created in the process of scrubbing phosphate fertilizer plants and in other high industry applications, such as aluminum.

Furthermore, while fluoride is scheduled for reduction in public water supplies, it is still very common and often dangerously concentrated in many food products at levels of many more parts per million than water and in pesticides used for food production, and in the soils where those pesticides are used.

Man Dies After House Fumigated With Same Fluoride Compound Sprayed On Food

Steve Watson
January 19, 2011

A man found dead in a house in San Jose, California, Monday was believed to have been killed by a toxic fluoride compound used to fumigate the residence, the same fluoride compound that has found its way into many foods with government approval.

The 45-year-old man, who remains unnamed, was overcome with toxic fumes after breaking into a house covered with a protective tent.

Employees from the exterminator company found the man’s body when they returned to the residence the following morning.

The man had either ignored or missed signs all around the house that warned of the presence of toxic sulfuryl fluoride (SO2F2), otherwise known as Vikane, a chemical used to completely rid buildings of pests.

The screenshots above, from a KTVU news report, clearly indicate that Vikane is a deadly poison.

Indeed, the chemical compound is a known human toxin that can cause hypotension, nausea, pulmonary edema, cardiac dysrhythmia, metabolic acidosis, and, as the unidentified man in San Jose unfortunately discovered, even death.

However, despite this common fact, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) knowingly approved the same deadly compound to be used to spray various food items, including nuts and dried fruits, in order to ward off pests.
Vikane was only recently banned following a petition filed by a coalition of activists including the Fluoride Action Network.

The EPA agreed with the groups’ position that the insecticide and food fumigant is a significant public health risk because it exposes children to excessive levels of toxic fluoride, and because it is a known toxin, reports Natural News today.
