I don't believe it necessary indicates the end othe world. The Mayans based their calendar on astronomy. They were incredibly accurate in predicting astronomical phenomenon such as eclipses, and modern astronomers believe that the end of the calendar points to something called the Galactic Alignment. If memory serves, the GA is the lining up of our moon, the earth, the sun, and the center of the milky way galaxy. In theory, this could trigger a magnetic pole shift which, in theory could cause geophysical and meteorological disasters, and render every electronic device or system useless. Or it could indicate a blizzard of cosmic radiation, which would have an effect similar to a nuclear holocaust.

The Mayans weren't the only ones to recognize this date as important. Links have been made with Nostrodamus, Hopi Indians, Sumerians, Edgar Cayce, Alchemy, Freemasonry, The Catholic Church, Ancient Egyptians, Judaism, Isaac Newton, and, according to Newton, possibly even the Christian Bible.

Is it the end of the world? Probably not. Will it be an important time in history? Very possible.

Just as a point of interest, the Mayans probably would have made another calendar... if the Spanish hadn't wiped them out.

No, the end of the world is not in 2012.
The end of the Mayan Calendar is in 2012.
Hopefully in a nutshell I can explain why. I will try.

The Mayan Calendar is based in astronomy on the "read point" of the Pleiades Star Cluster. This star cluster and our view of the heavens "may" become completely different late in 2012, probably even unrecognizable. No more Big Dipper, Sirius, North Star, Sourthern Cross and so on for us to calculate our movement with through time and space, nor planetary navigation. The Mayans apparently were aware of this looming change long ago and ceased their Calendar at what we call "the year 2012" due to this "unknown" factor.
Why may the view of the heavens change for us and our solar system? Well, thanks to infrared mapping and analysis of billions of stars in the last few years we know it is a fact that we do not belong to the Milky Way galaxy as we were taught and thought for so long. The galaxy we call home is a relatively tiny place called Sagittarius DE Galaxy(Dwarf Elliptical -- denoting size and orbit movement)very near and approaching the much larger Milky Way Galaxy. In short, our solar system and portion of the Sagittarius DE Galaxy is about to meet and enter and could be captured and assimilated by the outer wafer edge -(it is as if our tight circular Sagittarius DE Galaxy will attempt to rain down upon and through the flatter edge of the long wispy Milky Way Galaxy thereby risking a sticking capture)- of the Milky Way Galaxy which is an extremely hyper energetic area of space. This energy, in many forms, may not be blocked or contained by our magnetosphere or the atmosphere and cause secondary but extreme POTENTIAL problems for us in and of itself such as plant growth anomaly's, sun spot activity changes, earth weather extremes, crustal and pole shifts, tidal and oceanographic phenomenons, and human animal behavioral changes, along with electronic disturbances. And we would not be the first Galaxy to be engulfed by the Milky Way in this manner.

How in the white cliffs of Dover did the Mayans discover these things? LOL! I could not even guess.
Not a pretty picture of possibilities so far is it, when you consider that Sagitarius DE has 10,000 time less mass than the Milky Way?

What a charming reply. Not! LOL! Haha!
LOL! LOL! Haha! Abe, are you serious? I cannot get you to understand the U.S. Constitution even being as well written and simple as it is. So there is no way I would expect YOU to read my post and understand galactic and time space continuum theory's. I wrote it (that's right me, all by my little self, no "coppy" and "paist" here - LOL! Haha!) for the perusal of the thousands and maybe millions of very intelligent Topix readers who visit our wonderful Jamestown Forum. I am sorry I could not dumb the information down for you. The subject matter does not suffer fools lightly though. And noticing your above post that only ran about 50% accuracy in simple spelling, I will not even try to help you understand.
We have known for a long time you are quite a slowcoach and have tolerated you to a point. Even when you used to pull the racial baiting tact's with ebonic language. No more simplifying on account of you though. It is a disservice to others.
In fact I can look to you for further proof in knowing that evolution is false. Mankind, under evolution, could not have left YOU, of the same species, so far behind in intelligence. LOL! Haha! LOL!
It must be awful to be you. I mean, to be so far behind in mental capacity, finishing last and getting left behind every-time. Pitiful really.

You should be able to change the font size on your computer screen to appear as a larger type. Making reading much easier. Also, tinker with the brightness setting. Lowering the brightness of your screen may reduce perceived glare and assist you further.

Wow, you went for the jugular on that one.

Now, I don't want to start the evolution battle here, but just as a side note, I find it interesting that you are obviously a very scientifically intelligent person, yet you deny evolution.

God did not need man's help to create the world, So why do we think He will need our help to destroy it. There will come a time that the earth will be destoried and a new heaven and new earth will be created. It will be an earth without sin. I can't wait!!!!

Did you just say an Earth without sin? Please don't say that sentence anymore. That's an insult. If there is man on this New Earth, there will be sin. We are the only species on the planet that kills for a reason other than survival or food.

Many scientists disagree with evolutionary theory, though the majority probably adhere to it.

Daily Horoscope for December 29

Scorpio

Your thoughts turn to the past today, putting you in a nostalgic mood. You're awash with sentimental tears as you dwell on days gone by or gaze at photos of people you'll never see again. However, try not to let this mood of reminiscence turn into a tendency to feel sorry for yourself and therefore to demand special treatment from others.
