Oh no, you've got it all wrong. It's not the jail that needs to be condemned but how about the inmates?

have you ever been or know anybody that has been in this jail. they have to sleep on the floors and it is only suppose to hold 25 inmates where it holds more than that.

^^^ I see. It makes sense....I was told by an official that the Sheriff's Dept. is really pushing for a new jail.

It would make sense for the town to build a big new jail that was extra-secure and not in the middle of town.
(Maybe they could add a concrete outbuilding to house the stray dogs being discussed on a few other threads, too!)

i am not sure but i believe that they had two years to find a certain amount of acres in which to build a new jail before the jail that they are presently in was condemned. this was a few years ago and i hadn't heard anything about it since.

Well, we keep hearing that they don't give the criminals time to serve because we don't have room at the jail. It seems I read in the paper every week how people are arrested for the third or fourth time with DUI or drugs, and they pay a fine and go back to the same old thing. Let's build a nice big shiny jail that will house all the offenders and help them get off their substance abuse with a good, long stay.
I agree with VJPB - The inmates can be the ones taking care of our stray dogs!

Carl you have A good point there.A new jail would pay for itsself. But first we need a county court. We need to go to the polls and change the co. commisioners. Last budget they cut the sheriff budget 50.000. We need law enforcement regardless of cost as long as it isn't wastefull.

Now I wonder why the commisioners would go and do something like that just out of the blue. Don't suppose they might have had a good reason huh? Maybe it would be worth your time to look in to it and find out. That is what I would do before I started whining about it!

If I member correctly they went way over their budget. Should they not have to go by a budget like everyone else? Are they all above the law?Looks like somebody needs to be in control.

I dont know why. I guess you would have to ask the County Commissioners.

Maybe Fentress County needs a tent city, like the one in Maricopa County,Arizona with Sheriff Arpaio. Sure would be plenty of room to house criminals.

A new, larger jail would certainly be nice to have. Just keep in mind that a new, state of the art jail would probably cost many millions of dollars to build and maintain. This County simply does not have the industrial/corporate tax base to fall back on to fund many of its infrastructure needs.

Thus, anything the citizens want, the citizens better be prepared to pay for through increased property taxes or other means of funding that will eventually be paid for on the backs of the individual taxpayers of the County (bond referendums, etc...)

Rural counties have long faced this dilemma. It is a long established fact that business and corporations pay more in taxes than they use in government services. And, the reverse, a single family household, typically, uses more in services than it pays in taxes.

So...rural counties without substantial commercial tax bases are generally left struggling with the thorny and difficult issue of how to provide essential services without over taxing its citizens to pay for them.

I am certainly no fan of the current County government. I don't think that they do a good job of managing our money or providing high quality, effective basic County services.

But as taxpayers and voters, we can demand anything we want in the way of increased or upgraded services from our county government...as long as we understand that we are eventually going to have to pay for our demands at tax time.

Well you sure seem to know everything else about the commissioners and them cutting the budget so it would seem that you would know why.
Its time to get over it

Did it ever cross anyone's mind that the cost of fuel is one reason the sheriff's department was over budget? The commission gave funding for fuel based on last year's gas prices, so naturally there is a deficit. ALong with rising fuel costs, the cost of feeding the inmates has gone up.

So before someone automatically assumes there is some big scandal, watch the news. There are many more counties whose Sheriff Department needed more funding.
