when should kids get cell phones

My child was in a vehicle accident with a couple friends going to a movie.She immediatly got her phone from her pocket and called me.As soon as she told me I started freaking out, it took me a bit to drive to the hospital and I was nervouse and scared to death.I calmed down alot though as I kept getting texts and finally she sent a picure of herself in the ambulance smiling and said mom you would be so proud I HAD MY SEATBELT ON!After this happened I knew exactly why I allowed my child a cell phone.

everybody should be lucky enough to afford a phone. They're great. Just not during school hours. Should have to turn them in or something...

I agree I think cell phones are great. Some folks have said they would not let their child have one but I for one will not let my child leave the house without one.

The head of a prominent cancer research institute issued an unprecedented warning to his faculty and staff Wednesday: Limit cell phone use because of the possible risk of cancer.

The warning from Dr. Ronald B. Herberman, director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, is contrary to numerous studies that don't find a link between cancer and cell phone use, and a public lack of worry by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Herberman is basing his alarm on early unpublished data. He says it takes too long to get answers from science, and he believes that people should take action now, especially when it comes to children.

"Really at the heart of my concern is that we shouldn't wait for a definitive study to come out but err on the side of being safe rather than sorry later," Herberman said.

Here is another warning about cell phone use.Devra Davis the director of the University of Pittsburgh's Center for Environmental Oncology, and her group recently put out recommendations that we should be using a speakerphone or ear piece. The report says children, who have thinner skulls and developing brains, should use cell phones only in case of emergency.
And heaven forbid anyone should carry a cell phone in a pocket or clipped to a belt. "You're just roasting your bone marrow," Davis said.
