Why can't people come up with original names for their children? How lame. How many Madisons, Emmas and Isabellas do we need?

My little nephew is Alexander, first one in our family, yet the name is in the top 10 for 2008... We have a Henry in the extended family too, another first. These are originals for our families; would you prefer everyone do the "George Foreman Thing"?

"People are also so keyed into TV," said Maryanna Korwitts, author of "Name Power 101" and founder of BabyNamingCentral.com . "It's not the best practice but it's what happens."

Wouldn't you be embarrassed to tell your kid they were named for a TV character?

More proof that only stupid people are breeding. Dayami, Kymani?! Geez. And Barack? How utterly original.

Wow, did I touch a nerve? I said come up with original names, plain and simple.

Whatever Kate. At least they aren't common names spelled incorrectly. Chace? Aaden? And at least they aren't named after a dog in a bad movie. Marley?

Now for some oldies that no one seemed
to pick: We see no Miltons, no Felixes,
no Pauls, no Arthurs, no Egberts, no
Walters, and no Chunkworths near the
top ten. And for girls: no Adelaides,
no Wilmas, no Coras, no Beulahmaes,
and no Daisy Junes. Children or pets
seem to not have these names commonly.

Obviously you prefer euro sounding names over Asian, African, Arab etc. I'm guess you're comfortable with "George" and view that as "normal".

When I was born, in 1970, there was a new character with a mostly-unknown name on Marcus Welby -- Tracy. My mother thought it was modern and unique, and therefore, I am named Tracy. The popularity of this name spiked in the early 70s. It wasn't popular beofre, nor after. She didn;t name me for the character, but it was how she learned of the name.

Daily Horoscope for January 1

Capricorn

Happy New Year, Capricorn! I don't think the hair of the dog will help much this morning! If you're socialising again today, keep a rein on your expenses, as there could be a slight confusion in financial matters. Friends will be at your side and bail you out if there is a crisis. Use your strong internal discipline to accomplish your personal goals this year.
