The Arab world reacted with outrage at Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip on Saturday, launching scattered protests and calls for retaliation against Israel.

The Arab League announced a gathering of foreign ministers Wednesday would focus on the attack, said the organization's chairman Amr Moussa.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit extended his condolences to the Palestinians killed in the attacks and said Egypt, which brokered a six-month long truce between Hamas and Israel that expired a little over a week ago, has been trying to avoid such an escalation.

'Today everybody has to stand by the side of the Palestinian people and stop this blind military action,' the foreign minister said.

Egypt also came under attack by many in the Arab world for its role, along with Israel, in closing the Gaza Strip after the militant group Hamas came to power in June 2007. The closure is often seen as abetting Israel's siege of the crowded strip of land home to 1.5 million people.

A few hundred protesters gathered in Cairo Saturday calling for an end to the strikes.

In Lebanon, about 4,000 protesters marched through a refugee camp in the southern part of the country, condemning the attacks in general, and Egypt in particular.

'Hosni Mubarak, you agent of the Americans, you traitor!' they shouted. They also called on the militant group Hezbollah to attack Israel.

Lebanon's Prime Minister Fuad Saniora described the Israeli attacks as a 'criminal operation' and 'new massacres to be added to its full record of massacres.'

The militant group Hezbollah in a statement Saturday called the attacks 'a war crime and a genocide,' and criticized what it described as the 'shameful' Arab silence.

The Libyan foreign ministry issued a statement calling on Arabs to take solid action in 'responding to the Israeli brutality against Gaza,' and urged the international community to stop Israel's attacks.

Saudi Arabia, which has put forward a plan calling for a comprehensive peace between Israel and the Arab world, in a statement Saturday condemned the Israeli attacks. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who met with Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah on Saturday in Riyadh, said the Saudi leader promised to call U.S. President George W. Bush and other leaders to ask them to push Israel to halt its operations.

Hundreds of protesters in the Jordanian capital of Amman demonstrated, waving Hamas banners and condemning Israel's strikes. There were similar demonstrations in other Jordanian towns and Palestinian refugee camps.

The Jordanian ruler, King Abdullah II, called for an immediate halt to 'all military actions' in a statement. He also met Saturday with Abbas after the Palestinian returned from Saudi Arabia. In a statement, the two leaders called on the international community to pressure Israel to end its military operations.

In Syria's al-Yarmouk camp, outside Damascus, hundreds of Palestinians also protested, vowing to continue fighting Israel.

'It's a Zionist holocaust, but it won't dissuade us from going on with our struggle to achieve our goals,' said Ali Barakah, 42, one of the protesters.

The Sudanese foreign ministry issued a statement calling for an end to the Israeli attacks that it described as 'brutal raids' and saying Arab states should take a unified stand to protect the Palestinians.

Even Turkey, with ties to Israel, expressed dismay as about 2,000 people protested in Istanbul, burning an Israeli flag.

Interesting how you found and posted this story but seemed to miss the one last week about terrorists rockets pouring into Israel from Gaza. They even wrote about how some of the rockets misfired and fell in Gaza injuring some Palestinians. I doubt that the US would sit back while Cuba poured rockets into South Florida. But because you dislike Israel you ignore the attacks on them by the Palestinians and post the response by Israel to a week of rocket attacks. How is it you missed it?

This is just one small story of many that were written on militant attacks on Israel.

"On Saturday, militants fired more than 30 rockets and mortar shells into Israel, and the Israeli air force killed one militant who was launching rockets"

NEW YORK. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and his Cabinet members debated whether to attack the Gaza Strip after a six-month cease-fire expired and Palestinians fired rockets at Israeli border towns.
Olmert urged caution today while Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz, a former military chief of staff, said it was time to attack Hamas, the Islamic militant group that rules Gaza. Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, who is running to succeed Olmert, vowed to remove Hamas from power if she’s elected.

“A responsible government is neither eager for battle nor does it shy away from it,” Olmert told Cabinet members meeting in Jerusalem, according to a transcript e-mailed by his office.

Olmert, Livni and Defense Minister Ehud Barak have been in meetings with military commanders to decide whether to move ahead with aerial or ground assaults on Gaza. Hamas said Dec. 19 it will not renew the unwritten truce set with Israel last June.

Palestinians fired at least 19 rockets and mortar shells across the border today, according to the Israeli army. One rocket hit a house in the city of Sderot, about 5 kilometers east of Gaza, causing no injuries. A Thai agricultural worker was lightly hurt from a mortar shell that hit Kibbutz Netiv Ha’asarah, the army said.

Israeli forces destroyed a Palestinian rocket launching pad in a helicopter strike and yesterday killed a Palestinian who was launching rockets, the army said.

Palestinian Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the rocket attacks. The organization, like Hamas, is classified as a terrorist organization by Israel, the U.S. and European Union. Both blame Israel for violating cease-fire agreements to allow more food, fuel and medicine into Gaza.

‘Military, Economic, Diplomatic’

Livni, who is running neck and neck in pre-election polls with former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of the Likud Party, told members of her Kadima Party today that she will toughen the response to Hamas.

“The state of Israel and a government under me will make it a strategic objective to topple the Hamas regime in Gaza,” Livni said in remarks broadcast on Israel Radio.“The means for doing this should be military, economic and diplomatic.”

Mofaz, Livni’s running mate from Kadima, said he wouldn’t wait for the election.

“It is time to act,” Mofaz told reporters after the Cabinet meeting.“What else needs to happen? Are we waiting for children to die, for people to be injured?”

Other side?? Since the reformation of the modern state of Israel and the cowardly attack upon it by it's arab "neighbors" the left has proclaimed a "state" occupied by thugs, Egyptians and Jordanian losers that no other "palestinian" group would claim, save american ambulance chasers from the "Ramallah club" (picture the only people in the world who danced in the streets following 9/11) and terrorists. There never was a "palestine," except for "refugee camps'" read apartment slums occupied by human garbage imported by Israel's enemies for the sole purpose of destroying the only decent thing to come out of that miserable part of the world. Make no mistake. The ass backwards "muslims" only strike at Israel because they can't reach us.......yet...'till Obama gives them the means....The fate of humanity rests on us, the Brits and the Jews against all the barbarians... I just wish all of our enemies would come out in the open instead of blanketing the airwaves claiming to "fight for our rights."
Let's all stop pretending to be civil, drop the gloves and fight it out. I'll bet on pissed off country boys every time...Let's be honest.. the modern state of Israel created a viable economy (think the computer chips in every game you play) from the ashes of the Holocaust {which actually happened by the way,}. The counterfeit religion of islam which bastardized the Jewish and Christian religions, arose as a ponzi scheme to give ghetto dwellers and suicide bombers something to make themselves feel better about. Bomb away, Israel, it will just save us ammo in the long run. The typical arab stategy is to fire poorly made rockets from civilian enclaves into other civilian enclaves and blame the target for the failure. Just wipe the cowards out now before we have to do it...If the Israeli "side" makes you sick...then you probably believe in man-made global warming, the easter bunny and the Obama administration...

Many have died in Israel , and in gaza because of hamas. You really need to get your facts from better sources.

Hmmm. I'm a backwoods tard? Yet you're the one who buys the propaganda that Israel is a "terrorist" nation. You, sir are the one showing blatant ignorance; the type of ignorance typically shown by Obama supporters. Your inference about future attacks is wholly your invention. Here's a clue for you; mean what you say and you'll be less likely to misinterpret others. Your typical bullying tactics won't work on me; for on this issue you are simply wrong. However, if you want to devolve into name calling...up yours, asshole.

I think with understanding the background it makes more sense. Around WW1 when the world powers were still engaged in empire building, England controlled Palestine. The British allowed some Jews to return to Israel (due to worlwide persecution) and build small settlements. If you study Jewish history it is a story of persecution around Europe. They have been the scape goat for many countries for a variety of problems.

As persecution increased the Jews tried immigrating to Israel. The British limited the numbers of Jews immigrating and actually arrested and sent hundreds of thousands back to Europe where they faced Hitler's "final solution." After WW2 Jews from Europe saw Israel as a place to avoid another Holocaust. They poured into Israel in numbers greater than the British could handle, especially with their weakened resources after WW2. The British withdrew from the area and gave their support to the Palestinians. With British consent, the Palestinians rose up to wipe out the Israelis. Israel fought back and managed to not only drive back the Palestinians and form their own country but put an end to British influence in the region.

Over the next several decades the Israelis have responded to continuos non stop attacks by Palestinians and others with military force. Thanks to the Israelis the Iraqi and Iranian nuclear ambitions were set back nearly 20 years in the 80s. Nuclear weapons that would have been in the hands of terrorists regimes. Israel has borne the fight against terrorism long before the rest of the world.

Over the past decade Israel has arrested their own citizens and forcibly removed them from their homes to give land back to the Palestinians. Not land they lost in war but gave up to make the peace. It would be comprabale to Native Americans demanding Manhattan back and we forcibly remove all non Native Americans and handing everything there over to them. Or if you would prefer a smaller example just pick any other city in the US. Do you think we would do it? The Israelis have given up settlement after settlement in the name of peace only to have those settlements used to bombard them with rockets. They could have easily wiped out the Palestinians many times but have not. Heck many times while the Palestinians have been attacked by their neighboring Arab countries when they fled to them.

If not for the small country of Israel the continental US may be glowing in the dark. If the US gave the same types of concessions to Native Americans as Israel has given to Palestinians we would lose half the country. If the terrorists would stop their attacks on Israelis there might be a chance for peace after all.

Meet the Press today began with 9 solid minutes of pro Israeli interview propaganda with absolutely no chance for the Palestine point of view to be heard.

I for one am disgusted by the way the Israeli lobby such as AIPAC has taken full control of our nations foreign policy resulting in worldwide condemnation and Arabian rage against our nation.

And we wonder why 911 occurred.

They hate us because we enable Israel to demolish and steal Palestine.

We should be ashamed.
